I don't think they're showing him as dumb..
If you notice he is clever when it comes to everyone else but only when it comes to Mahreen he doesn't see that something is not right. By doing this I think that the writer's are showing us that she means so much to him that he doesn't suspect a thing. He is only thinking about the fact that he got his Julia back, and nothing else seems to matter to him. Through this we are seeing just how much he loved Julia and how much he might one day love Mahreen too.. I guess it shows us that she is the only one who can destroy him.
