Durga was standing between Meera and the door to make certain she could escape once Meera had died. Suddenly whoosh. Durga threw a lit match stick onto the petrol and the room burst into flames. Durga did not notice the bottom of her sari had petrol splashed on it catching fire as she stared manically at Meera the flames seperating them.
Outside Dharam noticed the flames coming from upstairs and sprinted towards the house. He could hear meeras screams "someone help me, oh god help" then silence...the front door had been left unlocked and he dashed up the stairs...
Durga realised her clothes were burning and threw herself to the ground rolling around trying to put the flames out. However she managed to cover herself in more fuel making the fire spread up her body slowly engulfing her until she stopped moving. Meera couldn't breathe. The heat and smoke were so intense she couldn't even see what had happened to Durga. She couldn't even leap from the window as the window was locked. Suddenly Dharam burst into the room as Meera unable to breathe and choking sunk to the ground. She was certain her death was near. She wished she could see Dharam one more time. Suddenly Dharam burst through the smoke and flames. His kurtha caught fire but he deftly ripped it off. With a clean swoop lifted Meera into his arms and using his body as a shield to protect her he burst through the smoke and flames. Outside he collapsed onto the cool grass with Meera in his arms. Both lay there barely conscious until Meera began coughing and spluttering. Slowly as she came too the horror of what had just happend engulfed her. She started trembling in shock then looked up at her husband who's chest she was lying on.
Although it was pitch dark the flames of the fire lit up the night sky. The heat was intense and both were drenched in sweat. Meera stared at her husbands handsome face. He was blackened with soot. Meera sat bolt upright and shook Dharam. Dharam failed to respond. she panicked. She placed her head on his chest and listened for his heart beat. Boom boom. His heart was beating away loudly. Just then Dharam started to cough and came back to consciousness. "Meera"? he said weekly not realising she was sat beside him. "Meera" he repeated with a panic in his voice. His eyes sprung open. The first thing he saw was his wife's face. Thank god. Both grabbed each other and held on tightly. "I'm never letting you go again" Dharam muttered his voice cracking. "I'm not going anywhere" Meera soothed him. Tears fell from her eyes. She broke the hug to look at him. "Durga?" she whispered. "She's dead". Dharam replied flatly. "She tried to kill you I can't believe it". Dharam winced in pain. Meera noticed Dharams chest had been burned. "Let's get out of here". You need to be in hospital". She helped Dharam up suddenly he felt the pain of his burns and winced. Meera looked around and noticed an old bucket full of rainwater. She ripped her sari, drenched the cloth and placed it on her husbands chest. As they walked away 'BOOM' the whole house was engulfed in flames and it had started to crash down.
Although both were weak with smoke inhailation and dehydration they managed to stagger to Dharams car. Dharam insisted on driving and Meera was to weak to argue. As they drove slowly away Meera could still see the orange flames lighting up the night sky behind the trees. She felt pity for the unfortunate woman who had suffered such a violent death.
