My grandmother actually got me hooked to Saathiya. She loves every single drama on Indian television, without exaggeration, and watches everything at least twice on repeat telecasts. When I'm in India on holidays I don't have a choice in TV shows... it's my granny's way or the highway 😛 I started watching in December 2010 when the kalakaris were at their peak. I actually found them very amusing initially but I think it was Koki's "meri Gopi vau" and the way she always stood up for her daughter-in-law that made me love it. I think it's very unusual for mother-in-laws to genuinely love their daughter-in-laws so much. Of course, Gopi's simplicity and devotion had a lot to do with it too but it was endearing to watch regardless.
But, as is the case with all Saathiya fans, I've also had my share of frustrations. I stopped watching it when Urmila became unbearable but kept coming back to it anyway because despite the kalakaris it's an extremely addicting show! Also, it reminds me of home when I'm in Australia (which is basically all year, except 2 weeks in December). I like Saathiya for the values it portrays... it's easy to criticise and say that Indian women are being portrayed as cowards and doormats. Well, that's one way of looking at it. I actually admire Gopi sometimes for her resilience and unmoving faith in her Kanhaji. I hate how she cries at the drop of a hat but for an orphaned girl who's so sheltered, hasn't ever been to school or seen the world and lived like a maid all her life, she's done pretty well for herself. In the end it only boils down to one thing: you either love Saathiya or hate it. There seems to be no in-between.
