//Ahem missed the first part of the conversation where Rashi told Prem everything about Gopi's misfortune//

"No Prem, I know that you are telling all these to make me feel good. My conscience pricks me every time I think about how I prevailed upon Papa to choose Ahem Modi over Parikshith…you know Parikshith right…the guy who lived near the tea stall?"

"Yes I do…Nirmala had created a scene when he sent a red rose to her"

"To tell you the truth, that red rose wasn't for Nirmala, he bribed a 4 year old boy with sweets and made him act as a courier the deliver the rose to Gopi. That poor kid was new to the locality and mistook Nirmala for Gopi"

"So did he really like Gopi?"

"I think so, that's why his parents approached Dad for her hand. They weren't demanding any dowry too. Dad felt that Gopi would be happy with Parikshith as he adored her and was financially comfortable…I told Dad that it would be wonderful if both me and Gopi get married into the same house. We would be there for each other. Moreover, the Modi's are stiff rich and Gopi will have everything she desires. "

"So you mean that I didn't stand a chance even if Mr. Beraham Modi wasn't there in the picture?"

"Yes. Now that I think of it Gopi would have been better off if she had married Parikshith- he would have certainly loved and respected her. That was the only thing Gopi wanted. "

"What else will they think when they see him shamelessly cavorting with that cheap girl?. "How could I?, my Chacha had swindled quite a few people in Rajpal Nagar,though the money was later recovered by auctioning his assets, the fear of facing ignominy made me stay away"

"Well, didn't she get over her crush on you?"

"Don't tell me that you never noticed. She adored you but restrained herself from expressing her feelings as she felt that you deserved to marry a better educated girl..why else do would she visit your house so frequently to help your mom. She dismissed it as puppy love of early teenage but I know better. That was her way of escaping the reality that she may never meet you again."

"Ok Rashi please store my number in your cell. Let us keep in touch. I would be glad to be of some help to Gopi."

"Stored…let us go back to the hall before my nakli jeeju sniffs around..btw do you know that I used to tease Gopi by calling you as my jeeju"

"Oh really?"// Voices faded away and Ahem stood still. Things happened too fast and he was totally shaken//

repairing his relations with Gopi was now topmost on his agenda…he should have a heart to heart discussion with Gopi before it is too late. He had nothing but hatred for Prem as he saw him as a rival now. He was furious at Rashi for encouraging Prem… "She will go to hell with her utopian ideas" Ahem told himself. He was seething in anger at the uncharitable remarks made on him.

scene 2{2 hours later} Living room of MM.

The party was over and the Modi men were relaxing and waiting for their cup of tea to arrive.

Gopi arrives holding the tray…Hetal smiles and tells her husband that her two bahus had worked really hard today. Baa notices the absence of sindoor on Gopi's maang and tells "Dikra, don't work so hard. Do make some time for yourself too…you have forgotten to put sindoor."

All eyes focus on Gopi when she opens her mouth to say the unexpected " Sorry Baa, I have decided to discontinue wearing sindoor."

Everyone present in the hall looks at her in surprise. Baa says "Why? what made you take such a decision? Don't you know the importance of sindoor?"

"I know its importance Baa and that's why I feel that I shouldn't be wearing it anymore…It lost its significance long ago. I feel as if I have borrowed it from someone"//Gopi casts a sharp glance at Ahem and Anita//. Everytime I look at my face I feel that the sindoor is a stain left behind by destiny…and that I should wash it away"

Gopi left after serving tea and all were left speechless. Ahem didn't know whether he was angry or sad.

Jigar turned towards Rashi and said "Rashi, what has happened to Gopi bhabi?"

"Jigarji, she isn't your bhabhi anymore. The only relationship left between you and her is that of jeeja and saali. "

Ahem shouted "Rashi. Do you know what you are speaking?"

"Yes jethji … I know things very well and so do you all. Everyone present here knows the ground reality but prefers to look away from it. Blood is thicker than water isn't it? I am Gopi's blood relative, I am her confidante…I will support her decisions come what may."

"Rashi glares at Ahem and Anita and says "You both can resume the foreplay you were indulging in the party hall." Saying these Rashi left in a huff. Everyone was shocked at Rashi's choice of words …Ahem and Jigar followed her but she slammed the door shut and started dialing a number. Anita was thick skinned enough to walk to the kitchen to help herself with some juice.
