Part-5

//Gohem room//

Ahem storms into his room and sees Gopi embroider peacefully

"Gopi, tell me what are you upto? what is all this?"

Gopi didn't look at him and said "Embroidery- cross stitch to be precise"

"You are getting on my nerves Gopi. Stop this elliptical talk and tell me what you and Rashi have decided?"

"We have decided to gift this bed sheet to you and Anita"

Ahem got furious and went closer to Gopi "What the hell are you talking Gopi? why are you bringing Anita between us?"

"No Ahemji, I came between you both. You couldn't forget her even after 2 years of marriage, and now you staged all this marriage cancellation drama. Kinjal was the mastermind and you were willing participants"

"Stop talking rubbish Gopi, you know nothing about Anita's pain"

"Oh, you seem to know everything about her. Do really mean to say that kindness made you let her lick you all over as if she were a puppy?"

"Mind your language Gopi. Anita is my friend and don't cast aspersions on her character. She behaves differently than you because she was brought up in a liberal and enlightened environment"

//Anita hears Ahem and Gopi fight. This pleased her and she planned to exacerbate it//

"Ahem do you remember Chirkut? He is getting divorced and guess what, he has hired the best divorce lawyer in town Mansukh Patel."

Ahem's tubelight of a brain switched on. He could see what Anita's words meant

He walked menacingly towards her and said "Oh is he getting divorced ? Then why don't you try your luck there and get the hell out of my house."

"What are you telling Ahem?"

"You have outlived your welcome Anita. I want you out of my house right NOW, pack your bags and leave ASAP. I haven't opened a homeless shelter here. I have reached the limit of my tolerance. I wasn't pleased with your antics at the party but kept quiet because I didn't want to create a scene there and hurt you as you were dealing with heartbreak. You were dressed like a circus girl and your actions were nothing short of acrobatics"

Anita remained silent and this angered Ahem even more

"Anita don't force my hand….just leave respectably or else I will throw your stuff out right now…"

Ahem marched off to the guest room. The rest of the family were alerted by Ahem's booming voice and had gathered upstairs. They saw him go to Anita's room. Anita was pleading with him but he didn't relent. Baa came forward and said "Anita please leave. I don't want to protect you at the cost of my family. You took advantage of our good nature and tried to bite the hand that fed you."

Anita looked at Koki in the eye and said "I won't leave. Your daughter was responsible for my marriage being called off and now you have to pay for it."

Koki said "Kinjal might have some part in it but you are not a baby….you chose to follow her. Since you are an adult you are responsible for your actions. You can live in Kinjal's house if you want shelter."

Anita had no choice now….she had to leave but before leaving she declared her undying love for Ahem and shocked him by hugging and kissing him.

Anita left MM but there was a strange uneasiness among everyone at MM. It felt as if a tornado has wrecked havoc with their emotions and moved away. The dinner was unusually quiet. The only noise that could be heard was murmers of Rashi and Gopi talking in the kitchen. Ahem tried his best to listen but their voice was barely audible.

Ahem was dying to have a private conversation with Gopi and hence decided to set a trap for Gopi. He placed pillows on the couch and covered it with sheets to fool Gopi into believing that he was fast asleep. Gopi fell for it and entered the room thinking that she has managed to avoid Ahem once more.

She was startled when the bathroom's door opened and a voice called her…Ahemji? She cast a look at the couch with suspicion. Ahem said "There is no one there..I arranged it as trapping you was the only way out." He moved towards Gopi and held her shoulder and said "Gopi" in a voice saturated with emotion.

Gopi instinctively moved backwards. This made Ahem realize that they drifted apart…but was the gap impossible to bridge? Only Gopi could answer him.

"Gopi I want to talk to you"

"Ahemji you must sleep now as you have got

office tomo"

"I can spare 15 minutes"

"It is already 11:30 and I am feeling sleepy"

Ahem chose not to continue the conversation any further. He wondered what was wrong with Gopi. He had seen all the jealousy and possessiveness hidden inside her…and now she doesn't want to talk to him. He loved female attention and saw Anita's company as some harmless fun. It didn't turn out the way he wanted it to…he had no inkling that Anita would start throwing herself on him. Things went too far, the fire he had started is now out of control and he was its first casualty.

His greatest folly was his inability to gauge Gopi and fathom the depths of her heart… he promised himself that he would make amends and make her his…..only his.

//Gopi wanted to think over things with a calm mind and hence avoided interacting with Ahem till things returned to normal. She woke up early in the morning and accompanied Baa to temple//

Ahem got irritated when he was told by Koki that Gopi has gone out. He thought 'She is going overboard with it. Why does she have to flee to the temple in order to avoid me? Can't we have a decent conversation with each other? She fought so hard for me yesterday…and now??'

Rashi sang the arti 'hey gopal krishna'- one of Gopi's favourites. It's lyrics sent Ahem's mind in a different direction- prem main rangi, main teri bhakti main rangi……….Prem …Prem Ahem couldn't get that name out of his mind…Is that guy behind Gopi's change of heart?

The seed of doubt was thus planted in Ahem's mind.
