Apara goes blind in reel life

Friday, July 13, 2007

Apara Mehta is a well known actress in small screens. She is re-entering the serial Saath Phere and she is also acting in Smriti Irani's home production Viruddh. Now, she speaks about the projects and her role. Excerpts from the interview:

You are re-entering Saath Phere. Are you happy with the new character that you are playing?
Yes, I am very happy. My character has turned positive and this time I am playing a blind woman, something that I have never done before.

Is the task difficult?
No, I won't say it is difficult, but it's challenging. I am on such a threshold of my career where I need to do such unconventional roles to keep myself satisfied as an actor.

What do you look for before signing a role?
I look for a good story as I feel that's the most important thing. It fuels the character and makes it powerful.

When is your character coming back in Viruddh?
It can return anytime, as daily soaps move very fast.

Viruddh is Smriti Irani's s home production and you have worked with her before. So how was the experience?
It was fabulous. We have worked together for six years so there is good understanding between us. Smriti has learned a lot from me. I like her spirit.

Which of your characters have you enjoyed playing most?
Kooki Kaki in Saath Phere and Sushant's mother in Viruddh. They are very real and are close to my heart.

Why do you think television actors do not do too well in films?
I beg to differ. Today, television is very big, as big as cinema. We are as famous as any film actor, except for the big stars. We are in every home, everyday, what could be better? So why should we even bother about cinema?

Saloni Ka filmy safar :

Rajshri Thakur, aka Saloni of Saat Phere is also very keen on a Bollywood career. In fact, not many know that the lanky actress has already done an international film, Hawa Aane De, before the Zee TV project came her way.

Films, provide an ultimate platform for the expression of your creative talent. So much attention is paid to your character and look, " she says. So what kind of films would Rajshri like to do?

" Anything interesting. I not only love masala flicks starring SRK and Amitabh Bachchan, but also serious arty flicks like what Nutan and Smrita Patil used to do earlier. But I will not be quiting TV for the big screen, as some of my colleagues are doing," she reveals.

So would you agree to do bold roles? "Why not if the character has meat enough and is presented beautifully! However, I will not wear short skirts and run around in next to nothing outfits." she asserted.

Niyati going places

This year will also see her participate in Femina Miss India

Urmila Bilgim, Kothrud

Oh! That beautiful girl is Sonia from Ek ladki anjaani si," a girl exclaimed. No she is Joe from Jassi countered her friend. Well she is the same actress; even poses for ads the third friend did justice to the conversation.

A quiet witness was Niyati Joshi herself who savored over the panipuri as well as the compliments at Beleshwar. While fiercely blushing over the recognition she managed to give a smile to her fans.

"This is my favourite hangout, the only difference is that now people know me," she confessed.

Indeed this neighborhood gal is all set to become the next big thing in the glamour industry. Joshi having her feet firm on the ground aims the sky to be her limit.

She is not only having prominent roles in the serials but has print and television commercials to her laurel. This year will also see her participate in Femina Miss India.

"It all started with Bunty- Prashant the photographers who chose me as their face of the year. Later I joined Lovell Prabhu's grooming classes for Femina Miss India," she accredited her success.

Further the ramp shows, auditions and beauty contests kicked off her career in Pune. "One day I plan to be like Sushmita Sen. A perfect blend of poise, elegance,
creativity and motherhood," she idolizes.

Thereafter to indulge meticulously in her passion, completing her graduation from Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce she shifted to Mumbai.

Ask her of working in the city that never sleeps? " No doubt Mumbai is t h e'wannab e ' place but the life is very hectic. I work in shift that means erratic sleeping schedules. I even travel by local trains during shoots. At times one also has to roam around distributing port folios. But everything seems worth at the end of the
day when episodes or the ads are aired," she quips. "Of course all this is garnished with occasional parties," she adds with a smirk.

So this demanding agenda serves the secret of her prim figure but otherwise this petite girl works out regularly in the gym.

"I enjoy exercising but hate to diet. In fact I don't follow one," saying so she laughs.

Finally this climbing of the success ladder certainly meant walking far away from home.

"After my parents, I miss varan bhat, which I used to enjoy comfortably at home."

Rajshree Vaidya (Saloni, Saat Phere)
I don't have any hardcore superstitions but it has been my habit since I was in college to take the blessings of my elders before I step out of the house. I also pray to Saint Swami Samarth. I believe that by doing this my day eventually goes well.

Saloni, Abhi on the rapist's trail in Saat Phere

The latest twist in Saat Phere will see Saloni (Rajshree Vaidya) and Abhi (Sachin Shroff) trying to find out the truth behind Pia's rape.

They have found a vital clue in the form of a bracelet and that very bracelet belonged to Shreedhar according to Pia whereby they suspect that rapist could be either Shreedhar or Ranjit.

"Saloni is completely against the evil doers and is hell bent on finding out the truth, thus she will give justice to Pia," said Rajshree Vaidya about the character she plays on Saat Phere.

"Saloni is a protagonist by nature and she is the one who will find out the identity of the rapist. They have a suspicion on Pia's husband Shreedhar but it will take around a month to gather the proof they need to apprehend the rapist. Initially the family doubts Saloni's methods but helps her nonetheless. Shreedhar's mother too will give clues to solve the mystery. It is a very interesting twist and the audience will not have expected what actually happened," said the shows executive producer Abdul.

Earlier in the show, an unknown assailant raped Pia (Niyati Joshi) in Saloni's (Rajshree Vaidya) farmhouse, during the Boni puja. The rapist even manages to escape, leaving her family and her in traumatic state. Pia's husband Shreedhar does not show concern as he thinks that she is having an affair with her best friend Abhi (Sachin Shroff). This leaves Pia shocked and depressed.

When stars were crazy fans…

From being star struck kids to now having fan bases of their own, life seems to have come a full circle for these stars, who talk about their experiences of being on the other side of the television screen.

Karan Mehra aka Vedanta of Virrudh, reveals, "When I was in my school I used to wear chains on my wrists like Amitabh Bachchan used to in his Shehanshah and act like him to the extent of going and telling my friends to hit me. I would protect myself using the chain just like he did in the movie!"

< align=center marginWidth=0 marginHeight=0 src="googleDisplay.htm" Border=0 width=250 scrolling=no height=250>

Like Karan, Sharad Kelkar aka Nahar of Saat Phere was also a big fan of the Big B. He says, "When I was growing up I was a great fan of Mr. Bachchan and still am. When I was 3-years-old, my uncle had a gramophone and whenever he was free he used to play Khaike Paan Benaras Wala from the film Don. I used to dance to the tunes of that song and also do his mimicry when I was in school and college – copying his style of standing, dressing and talking."

The multi talented Sophie Choudry, who will star in Vikram Bhatt's upcoming film Speed, says, "Although I was born and brought up in London and I was a complete Bollywood buff. While my friends would put up posters of international pop stars I only had a poster of Salman Khan and that too in my school desk. I was lucky enough to have my own television and video when I was really young. So I never left home in the morning without watching either a song or scene from one of his films. I would be putting on my school uniform and happily dancing away at 7am! I was a big fan of his because he made my heart melt with his smile and romantic dialogues."

Sophie reveals that her other 'obsession' was a little less close to home. "It was Jordan Knight from the boy band 'New Kids on The Block'. I went for every single one of their London concerts and always got front row seats which cost my mum a fortune. Once I was heart broken and started crying because I got a third row seat instead, but believe it or not he threw a teddy bear from on stage and it fell right into my lap."

Jai Bhanushali aka Neev of Kayamath reveals that he was big fan of Aamir Khan when he was younger. He says, "I was crazy about Aamir and never missed any of his movies. When I was in the 9th standard, Ghulam released and I was so impressed with the song Aati Kya Khandala that I went out and managed to get an outfit that was very similar to Aamir's in that song. I used to wear that and behave like a loafer, teasing the girls and asking them out to Khandala."

Reshmi Ghosh aka Bhoomi of Kyunki adds, "I remember when I was in school, there was a group of girls along with me who were fans of Aamir Khan and Tom Cruise. We would collect postcards and photographs of Aamir. I would keep these pictures in my books, wardrobe. I also had an album in which I would keep cuttings of all these." http://news.indya.com/newsDetails.aspx?xfile=2007/August/New s_20070802_21

Sharad Kelkar and Rajshri Thakur

Believe it or not, onscreen couple Sharad Kelkar aka Nahar and Rajshri Thakur aka Saloni in Saat Phere-Saloni Ka Safar are no longer on talking terms. If sources on the sets are to be believed, the two actors have started avoiding each other as much as possible.

Says a source in the production house, "As newcomers, Sharad and Rajshri shared a fantastic rapport with each other. Their off-screen friendship resulted into a brilliant chemistry on screen which shot up the show's TRPs. But things started going wrong soon after Keerti, Sharad's wife, made her entry as Chandni in the show. Now they don't speak to each other any more. And often it is quite difficult for the production house to arrange their scenes together."

According to our source, Rajashri would get irritated with Sharad and Keeti's public display of affection and would often complain to other co-actors. It had happened many times that despite being the lead actress in the show, Rajshri would have to wait for hours because Sharad and Keerti would be late for the shoot. Ever since, Rajshri started avoiding Sharad and gradually stopped communicating with him.

The production house had organised a lunch for Sharad and Rajshri last Tuesday, in an attempt to patch things up between the two. When asked about the lunch programme set up by the production house, Sharad confirmed the news, although he rubbished the rumours about his ongoing cold war with Rajshri. Sharad said, "Rajshri and I are both professionals and we know where to draw the line. Yes, we went out for the lunch together on Tuesday." Rajshri Thakur was unavailable for comment.

Rains delay Abhi-Pia Saat Phere

Heavy rains that lashed Mumbai on Tuesday resulted in the shooting of Zee's show Saat Phere being halted for 8 hours leaving the entire team frustrated.

Reliving the horrific experience, Sharad Kelkar (Nahar) tells us, "The important marriage and mehendi ceremony of my on-screen sister Pia was supposed to be shot but rain played havoc. Even now also we are not able to shoot because of a power cut in Magnum studio. That day was really frustrating. I reminded us of that terrible July 26 experience."

< align=center marginWidth=0 marginHeight=0 src="googleDisplay.htm" Border=0 width=250 scrolling=no height=250>

Executive Producer Abdul Karim also vented his frustration. "We are running behind schedule for the last two days and have suffered huge financial losses."

Well, we hope that audience gets to see the Saat Phere sequence of Abhi-Pia soon!

Doctors Order

Has Poonam Gulati been seeing a married doctor for the last four years?

Ranjib Mazumder

Jodi kamaal ki: Poonam and Mahesh
Poonam Gulati (Shubhra of Saat Phere) has been seeing a doctor named Mahesh Chitnis for the last four years. Poonam and Mahesh have been open about their relationship even though Mahesh is married and has a two-year-old son.

A close friend of Poonam says, "Poonam and Mahesh's friendship started when both of them used to host a show on Doordarshan. Mahesh was not much into acting at that time as he was busy with his medical practice. Poonam eventually moved into the television industry and got busy with her work. Last year when Poonam was suffering from jaundice Mahesh took good care of her. Poonam used to go to his clinic at midnight after finishing her shoot and Mahesh would be there for her. Since last year, they have been more open about their relationship. Although, Mahesh is married and has a two-year-old son, they are very much in love. Both of them meet for dinners and Mahesh also accompanies Poonam to parties. Poonam also insisted that the production team of Antakshari get Mahesh as her singing partner in the show."

According to a source from Antakshari, "Mahesh was Poonam's partner in the show only because of her insistence. In Antakshari, there is a round where you have to run through water to reach the buzzer. Poonam refused to run in the water and the shooting was stalled for two hours. However, when Mahesh asked Poonam to go ahead with the round, she immediately agreed."

Poonam says, "Yes, I told the Antakshari team to include Mahesh in my team because he's a good friend. Yes, I refused to go through water for the buzzer round because I was dressed inappropriately. But when Mahesh asked me I agreed to do it."

On being probed further, she said, "We have known each other for a long time. Last year, Mahesh took care of me, and I used to go to his dispensary after shooting at night as I was being treated for jaundice. Mahesh has been a pillar of support for me. And we do go to parties together. But I am not dating him, he is just a special friend."

According to Mahesh, "Poonam called me for Antakshari and I was more than eager to participate in the show. We go out together because we are close friends. I am married and Poonam is just a friend."

STAR Plus still leads, Zee not far behind

A. L. Chougule
It may still be in the second position, but Zee is in a celebratory mood as Star Plus' GRPs are on the descent...

aving consistently worked its way up over the last one and half years, Zee TV is in celebration mood. For week 29 of 2007(July 15 to 21), Zee's GRPs (group rating points) stood at 303 against STAR Plus' 351 though in week 28 STAR was ahead of Zee with more than 100 GRPs. Though STAR Plus continues to lead in the all-day viewership share, what gives Zee a solid reason to celebrate is the fact that STAR's GRPs have collapsed from over 500 to around 350 in the last one and half years whereas Zee has climbed its way up from 136 to around 250 GRPs. Also Zee claims to be the leader in the 7 to 10 pm weekday band with an average of 90 GRPs against STAR's 80.
If Zee is jubilant for inching closer to STAR Plus, media watchers have viewed this development as a precursor to the future scenario where the seven-year long leadership of STAR Plus could be more vulnerable to new challenges and competition. Take for instance the channel's all-day and prime time (8 to 11 pm) share. A year ago, it was 51.1 and 53.4 per cent respectively against Zee's 22.9 and 21.6 per cent. Today STAR's prime time share (7.30 pm to 11.30 pm, Monday to Thursday) is 18.29 per cent against Zee's 14.82. In other words, STAR Plus continues to maintain its leadership but the leader has seen a huge dent in its domination and Zee is not far behind in the competition. However, what needs to be mentioned here is the change in the TAM's panel size which has gone up from 4800 PeopleMeters covering 73 cities and towns with one lakh-plus population to 7000 PeopleMeters spread over 151 cities that has impacted the ratings of channels across the board.

But even if one takes into account TAM's new panel that has resulted in greater representation to more regions and regional channels, it's a fact that STAR has lost a huge chunk of viewership. "STAR Plus has seen a reduction in its domination of the Hindi general entertainment space in the last one year but on an average the difference in GRPs of Star and Zee has been between 80 to 100. STAR Plus continues to lead at prime time as well as in the all-day share. But in the last one year there has been fragmentation in viewership because of regional channels and new players. Also being the leader, the impact on Star's TRPs and channel share has been more in comparison with other players," says a spokesperson for STAR.

STAR stands tall in the 10 to 11 pm slots with two of its most successful properties, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Even in 11 to 11.30 pm slot it leads over Zee with Kayamath. In fact, thanks to the heavyweights like Kyunki and Kahani Star leads in the 8 to 11 pm weekday band with 173 GRPs against Zee's 153. But between 7 to 10 pm it is a neck-to-neck fight between STAR and Zee with the latter marginally ahead of STAR Plus. According to the STAR's spokesperson, normally prime time is defined as 7:30 to 11:30 pm which has the original programming in the evening prime time." STAR Plus has a repeat at 7 pm while Zee has an original show. Hence it does not need comparison. But if you compare 7.30 to 11.30 pm prime time where both channels have original programming STAR Plus is comfortably ahead of Zee," says the STAR spokesperson.

Leaving the 7 pm slot aside, if comparison is done on one-to-one basis, STAR's performance certainly seems to have weakened. For instance, at 7.30 pm Parivaar on Zee is giving a fair fight to Antakshari on STAR Plus and at 8 pm, Zee's Dulhan is far ahead of Antakshari. Similarly Kasamh Se at 9 pm stands tall against Star's Meri Awaaz Ko Mil Gayi Roshni. Kasturi at 9.30 pm on STAR Plus has recently raced ahead of Zee's flagship show Saath Phere. Says Zee's senior vice-president Ashish Kaul, "We are trying to tell good stories and our content is getting good ratings. But STAR Plus is stagnating. There is no innovation in their content." Ashish further says that STAR built its prime time brick by brick. "But today STAR Plus is standing on only two bricks, Kahani and Kyunki," he adds.

STAR's spokesperson admits that in certain slots Zee scores lead over STAR Plus. "But we believe in like to like comparisons and evaluating trends/averages and not just snapshot data of one or two weeks," says the spokesperson, adding, "and the average data clearly shows that Zee is substantial distance away from STAR Plus in the prime time rating analysis." However, looking at the average data and evaluating the trends and averages, it is for sure that STAR Plus has lost substantial ground to other players and the major beneficiary is Zee. Media watchers feel that this is not the end but just the beginning. Going forward there is likely to be more fragmentation in viewership of existing general entertainment (GE) channels with new entrants, regional and niche players making a further dent into GE channels' viewership share. STAR Plus is likely to suffer the most.
