"I will the do the best of what
I am offered in Saat Phere" Neena Gupta

Things have changed a lot for the veteran actress since her last super hit show Saans. Neena essentially belongs to the intelligent brigade of actress, with an intensive background of serious cinema and sensitive television series; however it's been a decade since TV changed its face and became soap-a-holic. Neena and many like her have either found different avenues to emote or have returned hapless, turning into professionals leaving passion for the genre aside.

Currently, the actress is being seen as Manno Bhabhi in Zee's TRP raker Saat Phere after a hiatus. Talking about her role she says,"There's only one kind of thing happening on TV and you have to do what is happening on TV!"

That may not be the voice of a fiery, intelligent Neena that one has gotten accustomed to. This is a more matured, grounded Neena who "will wait till things change for TV change. Across the globe when a country has experienced TV boom, they have had similar situations but things have changed eventually. So logically speaking there's a change awaiting us too!" In fact it is true with the focus shifting from Bahus to Betiyaans and certain ancillary channels devoting themselves to young and fun loving shows, we are in a transition phase!

Neena adds that "one can't often engineer change and when that happens it's better to be the best at what you are given to do. I can't change scripts and shows when they are doing well with the public, all I can do is be the best in my roles."

Talking about roles, she returns as Manno Bhabhi in Saat Phere after months of hiatus. "Yes, in fact I was introduced in the show for a purpose, to help Saloni (Rajshri Thakur) with her problems. Then she had to go as Saloni's track gained momentum. There was a lot of drama around Manno Bhabhi's character. And now it's just the opposite, the drama has reduced and a softer side of Manno Bhabhi as a mother has come into play. The dramatic responses and counselling has now been taken over by Saloni."

So does she like her character? "As I said before I will do the best of what I am given, Manno Bhabhi has new shades to emote, and it's interesting as an actor to do different things. People have already liked the character and are going to be emotionally involved in her now. It's a different side to her character as a mother son tryst has not been not explored in this way before."

We strike a conversation on the decadence of television generally and how intelligent actresses like Pallavi Joshi, Mita Vashist, Supriya Pathak have shaped themselves into the TV's framework. Neena adds wistfully "It's not about intelligent actors anymore, on the whole actors have nothing much to do in terms of sharpening their acting skills. It's not their fault either, it's just a phase. But I do foresee a positive change, there is a strong feeling that we will soon be looking at a new face of TV across the country."

It sounds like Hegelian dialectics: we wonder how the new face will be like: say a wiser version of Gharonda and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki? Telly Chakkar.com, like its fans awaits that time!

This is two much...

The Sindoor unit hired a body double for Sharad Kelkar because of his latecoming. Now the body double comes late!

Shailesh Negi, Sharad Kelkar
Sharad Kelkar could barely make it to sets of Sindoor on time, so a body double got to be the star instead. Apparently, the starry aura has rubbed off on him to such an extent, that even the body double has started showing up late on the sets!

The story goes that Sharad Kelkar bit off more than he could chew, and was so occupied with Saat Phere that he had scant time to report to the sets of Sindoor on time. Having run out of the charitable spirit of forgiveness, the producers of Sindoor decided to hire a body double for his scenes, leaving only the close-ups for Sharad himself. All was well until the double too began reporting late… Now, the entire unit spends quality time twiddling their thumbs until he shows up.

Naresh Suri who plays Raizada in Sindoor adds, "All of us are always ready with costumes, make-up and lighting. But the original and the duplicate are always missing. It has become a standing joke on the sets."

Shailesh Negi the body double, defends himself by saying that he lives very far. He says, "It's a very long commute for me all the way to the sets at Goregaon. I have to change trains and more often than not, they run late. The entire unit rags me about my latecoming, but I know they don't mean to insult me."

Er, maybe he is unfamiliar with the concept of starting out earlier? After all, all of Mumbai makes it to work on time!
Shailesh has played body double to Shah Rukh Khan (for Navratna talc), now he is doubling up for Sharad Kelkar.

Interestingly, Shailesh is Sharad's double in Saat Phere too, with the result that they keep alternating between the sets of Sindoor and Saat Phere. Shailesh says, "When Sharad is on the sets of Saat Phere, I am on the sets of Sindoor and vice versa." A Sharad here, a Shailesh there…

Executive producer Khalid Khan remarks, "Shailesh should move to a place closer to the location of the shoot. It will save all of us a lot of trouble."

Sharad, on his part, says, "I have committed dates to Sindoor. Yet, I am not called for shooting for days. I guess it must be cheaper for them to shoot with the double."

The plot only thickens, doesn't it?

Not 'Fair' !
18 Jun, 2007 l 0000 hrs ISTlPRERNA SHAH Times News Network

In spite of 'dark skin' tone becoming synonymous with 'dusky beauty' , India's obsession with 'fair skin' continues .
In spite of 'dark skin' tone becoming synonymous with 'dusky beauty' , India's obsession with 'fair skin' continues . And a recent survey by a research firm just goes to prove it. It concludes that India , and other countries like Korea, Japan and China, are huge markets for an array of skin-whitening products.

Rajashree Thakur, one of views for her performance , she is presently sought after by many production houses.

"Now that I am successful , people tell me that I got the role only because of my skin and that I wouldn't bag another one like it because fair girls are always the first choice! Which effectively means that they believe I am just a 'one serial wonder' , though I have been doing theatre for many years and have also starred in an Indo-French film," says Thakur. She says that wherever she goes, she comes across scores of women who live with an inferiority complex because they happen to be 'brown' .

Kakoli Sen, an artist, agrees. "How many matrimonial ads does one come across which say: 'Wanted a lovely, dusky complexioned girl' ? That speaks volumes about our attitude. As a child, I was often perplexed when people commented on my dark skin. My mother brought me up to feel it was a beautiful television's leading ladies, has reason to believe the survey's claim. Dusky-toned Thakur was apparently told by 'well meaning' industry professionals that her skin tone would work against her. However, Thakur had the last laugh when she bagged a role in a serial that revolves around the travails of a dark complexioned girl who is often prejudiced against, but eventually wins over every situation. Receiving rave recolour but somewhere deep down I knew that most Indians believed it to be otherwise ."

How does one deal with such antiquated attitudes? The answer, most believe, is a generous dose of humour. "How else do you cope with people who give you unsolicited advise on what creams and natural remedies to use to 'lighten' your skin tone? It is assumed that you are unhappy with your skin colour when you are not," says Vandana Nair, a media professional.

It is not just women who bear the brunt of unkindly jokes. Men face it too. "During my graduation days, I was often teased with - 'No soap can lighten your skin tone. You need to go to the Himalayas and meditate for years' ," says Utkarsh Pandya, an entrepreneur.

A chemist from a city based medical store adds, "Fairness creams sell like hot cakes. I have never had a single person asking for a tanning cream, it is always about getting fairer."

And we thought that Bipasha Basu, Nandita Das and Co. had changed the rules!

Waiting for take-off

TRAVELLERS TALES: Apara Mehta
Apara Mehta spent the entire Saturday at the Santa Cruz airport, waiting for her Ahmedabad flight to take off.

Along with co-actor Feroz Bhagat, the actress had to while away her time at the domestic airport since all flights had been grounded because of the heavy downpour.

When flights resumed in late evening, Apara managed to reach Ahmedabad in time for the late night show of her Gujrati play, Marriage Ma Masti, Masti Ma Marriage. Talk about devotion!

Sharad Kelkar and Keerti Gaikwad

For the last two days Sharad Kelkar has been in a flurry. The guy who barely ever takes off from his shoots has had to take five days' leave. He has finally been forced to shift into his new house in Oshiwara. The actor who has been staying in a rented flat at Goregaon for some years, did not get an extension from his landlord. Hence the urgency.

Sharad bought a flat at Oshiwara six months ago and he has been getting the interiors done. At the same time he was busy with his show Saat Phere that requires him in most of the scenes. So, he has not been able to shift to his new pad. But his landlord refused to give any further extension as he had already given him extensions thrice.

Sharad, when contacted, was reluctant to speak to us due to his busy schedule. "I am too busy moving into my new house. I won't be able to talk now," he said.

Kavita Shyam

Apara Mehta
Apara Mehta is back in Saat Phere after a gap of over one year. This time not only with an interesting track, but also in a new avatar. She will play a blind woman - a simple and positive character. Apara had done a cameo in the show earlier where she played an out-and-out negative character as Kuki Kaki.

Very excited about the twist in the story and her return to the show, Apara says, "I have an interesting role in the show. It's something I have never done before on television or in theatre before. I am excited about playing a blind woman and it is going to be a huge challenge for me. As an actor, I have always looked forward to variety and exciting roles. I will have a dramatic entry and my character will add twist to the track. I am not going to have a glamorous image in the show. Rather, it's going to be a simple sari, and minimal make-up and jewellery."

So is Apara watching films like Black or reading up books to be able to play her character well? What kind of home-work is she doing? "I'm currently learning to play blind. My daughter's best friend was a blind girl so I have observed her a lot. I'm trying to get the nuances into my acting. In television a character is as good as the writer's script. A well-written track works well and the actors can better it with their acting skills."

Apara has already started shooting for the show. Says Rashmi Sharma, creative head of the show, "Apara's entry in the show will bring about major twists in the track." For now Apara has her hands full with Virrudh, Solhah Singarr, Karam Apna Apna and her first love - Gujarati theatre.

Nahar to exit Saat Phere in coma

Saat Phere on Zee will see the exit next week of Nahar, at least temporarily. The serial's star will go into coma and not be seen on the show for a few days.
Nahar (played by Sharad Kelkar) will be attacked by his brother-in-law Ranjit. "I will be attacked by Ranjit's men. I insulted him in last week's episodes because of his treatment of my sister Pia," said Sharad, "and for this he is going to take revenge on me. There will be a fight sequence in which I will be beaten up badly and thrown off a bridge. I won't die but will be lost to my family for some time."

The reason this twist was introduced into the serial was because Sharad wanted a break. "I've been shooting for 30 days at a stretch," he said, adding that the toll of not being with his wife Keerti was adding up. The couple is known for their public display of affection.

"In the serial I will be shown in a coma and after that… anything can happen! The audience have to wait and watch."

Rashmi Sharma, the creative head of the serial said: "Nahar will be badly injured in this attack, but he won't die. His being lost will bring in another twist and that is the return of Kuki Kaki (Apara Mehta)."

Nahar's wife on the serial, Saloni (Rajshree Thakur-Vaidya) said: "Nahar is going missing, so again I have to struggle to find my husband. I have many enemies in the serial and though I'm not sure of where the track is headed, I do know that Saloni will be incomplete without Nahar."

Pia gets raped in Saat Phere

This week in Saat Phere, Pia (Niyati) will get raped when she will go for the bhogi puja to Saloni's farmhouse.

Saloni has invited Pia for the puja but when she reaches there no one treats her nicely. Then someone follows her and pulls her away. She screams but no one listen to it. She gets raped. Nobody knows who the rapist is and the whole family is in a state of shock after watching her condition. Later on, they informed her family about it.

< align=center marginWidth=0 marginHeight=0 src="googleDisplay.htm" Border=0 width=250 scrolling=no height=250>

However, her husband Sridhar refuses to accept her and throws her out of the house. Then her brother Nahar slaps him and takes her away. Pia is also shocked after watching her husband's reaction and then attempts suicide. As it is Pia's husband has a feeling that Pia and Abhi (Sachin Shroff) have something going on between them.

Niyati says: "I have not shot for that scene as of now. However, after the rape, the conflict between her and her husband is going to increase and she cannot digest this shock. She will not even talk to anyone. I cannot tell you who the rapist is. I am little bit nervous about it, but at the same time, I am looking forward for it. It will give me a chance to prove myself."

So will Pia die in the show? Or will someone rescue her? Further, will Nahar able to find out who is the rapist is? We will have to wait and watch.

Saloni is obsessed with Kavita Chaudhary in Udaan

While she is satisfied playing the protagonist Saloni in ' Saat Phere ', the petite Rajshri Thakur says her real dream is yet to come true. She is also a bit unhappy with all the similar shows aired on all the channels currently.

" As an actor I want to play different roles. Especially, the role Kavita Chaudhry played in Udaan, " she states.

This story of a young girl from a middle class background who becomes an IPS officer is still remembered by the old time TV viewers, but then the television of the 21st century demands only rich families and luxurious sets, and not something of that sort.

Rajshri blames this on producers and asserts, " If setting-up producer makes something better or different, gradus viewers will watch that too. "

Hats off to you Rajshri! After all, which other actor has the time to think about actually what he / she wants to do and how the standard of tele - serials have gone down drastically! All they are worried about is - their bank balance.

Rajshree talks about real and reel life

Friday, July 13, 2007

Rajshree Thakur has redefined beauty on Indian television with her role of Saloni in serial Saath Phere. The dark-complexioned actress talks about her faith in the character she is playing and the show's success.

How does it feel to be a part of a successful show?
Very good, especially since it is my first exposure in television.

How easy or difficult is it for you to play Saloni and what are the similarities, or lack of it, between the reel and real you?
It is not too difficult to portray the character of Saloni. However, at times it is challenging when I do not agree with what Saloni is doing. We are quite similar, emotional yet sensible and compassionate. The only difference is that I don't listen to anybody and don't accept my mistakes easily, whereas Saloni owns up even if she is not at fault.

How hopeful were you that the character of a dark-complexioned girl would click?
I knew that it is different from the characters in the other serials and thus it would work. What I did not expect was that Saloni would become so popular with the masses.

What is the best compliment that you have ever received?
We were shooting in Singapore when a lady walked up to me and said her daughter used to dislike Indian clothes but had started wearing them after watching me in Saath Phere.

Your take on Sharad Kelkar who plays your husband on screen?
I'm lucky that we have clicked well. Since we are comfortable with each other, we can go through any scene easily.

What if the show requires you to go for an age leap?
I cannot tell you anything right now. I might say no now but agree later.
