SP should be commended, not ridiculed

I noticed a lot of replies to yesterday's update scoffing that things like this don't happen anymore in India...that no one would prevent a dalit from entering a temple. But this is not true. While we hear all the news about India's rise as a superpower, the truth is that the vast majority of Indians--those who are poor and living in remote villages--are being left behind, with no social mobility whatsoever. There is so much focus on India's progress and booming IT industry that it is all too easy to forget about the poorest members, as many people here clearly have. If you go to the BBC news website and search "dalit," you will find hundreds of articles about their plight.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7610999.stm

Those are just two articles. There are several more.

So please do not do these poor people such an injustice as to deny that they are suffering, and suffering enormously. They are very real and this kind of discrimination is rampant.

I haven't watched SP in a very long time, and have never really watched regularly. I think the ending to the last track (with Kalika) was ridiculous and ended in a very stupid way. But despite all of that, I really commend them for taking on an issue which so many Indians are sadly unaware of or in denial of. Remember, a society is only as successful as its poorest members.

you can say I am devoted and addicted to SP . I commend SP creatives for taking up issues one by one.
But I posted what I saw and experienced.
In my opnion SP is still a best number one serIal and it will remain so.
It is truly a shame if these kind of things are happening in this century and so called educated ppl are supporting it.
As our religion says to respect each and every individual. If so called samaj ke thekedaars are doing this then they are insulting both our religion and God.
lali masi came and made a mockery of our customs which were meant to help preg woman and not ridiculed or demean a lady who gave a birth to a child. That was truly a stupid track . I am gald it is over.

i agree .
I wudnt go so far as to say SP is commendable ...............it is , in fact , stupid as it shows the lead heroine taking torture at home and behaving like james bond outside ...................a mystery i cannot comprehend . Today Saloni was brave outside the temple , and explained what real Rajput dharma was but she had no guts to explain the scientific reason of the custom of keeping a recently delivered woman out of the kitchen for 40 days ...............to laali maasi and in fact she agreed with Laali maasi that her uneducated beliefs were right . Not only that , she gave a stupid , lame excuse to Nahar who was furious with Laali Maasi that Laali Maasi must be correct as since ages barren women have been regarded as ashubh .
And the same Saloni is now telling what in reality age old customs really meant . One feels like saying ha ha ha !! when she talks like that . Where had her good sense gone during the laali maasi episodes ? She endorsed each uneducated view of laali maasi and insulted women in general .
So u see , our dear Saloni does James bond behaviour only with outsiders and pampers immense superstition and wrong behaviour of insiders only for the sake of personal relations..............something i cannot stomach as a viewer . In my opinion , even more than laali maasi and Tara it was Saloni who needed a good pulling up and blasting from the likes of Mannobhabhi . Only one viewer bluntly wrote a post that she was in fact a shame on womanhood when she fell at laali maasi's feet as laali maasi personfied uneducated superstition .
But all this is besides the point so sorry . Point is i agree , Dalits r still not allowed in temples in rural India , female infanticide still goes on , second marraiges for waaris still go on , and dowry burning still takes place.,................these r blunt realities . Unfortunately SP shows these issues but no right ways of dealing with them . The barren woman issue was not solved till the last moment .................they actually showed Saloni agreeing that perhaps barren women indeed r a curse . In betiyaan Yuvraj is now openly living with Kajri . They show no solutions. Its horrible .

I totally agree with you. They need to show reform and female fighting it not obeying to the norm. unfortunately wonen are singled out and left to face these dire situations by themselves. Many times woman who can not get pregnent may not be her problem . Men may be infertile. But then women are at blame and subjected to all kind of torture.
I will be truly happy if saloni will be fighting this and may be opening institution against it where women in similar situation can go and learn her rights and fight back.

I used to think that at least in the cities these things do not happen anymore...but I was shocked when I went to Chennai last month. My mother in law just expired and we had to go do some rituals for the shradh for all the 14 days. I am a Bengali and my husband's family is Tamil. So obviously I did not understand what was written. I was shocked to hear that the place was only for brahmins where the rituals were happening. Non Brahmins were not allowed there. I could not believe my ears....I am a Brahmin too, but never in my life I had seen anything at my place where there was segregation between Brahmins and non Brahmins....I mentioned to his cousin that I did not agree there should be such segragations; but unfortunately he started lecturing me how Brahmins were more intelligent and that is the reason for segregation.......I did not want to argue since the rituals were for someone's death...I just told him that he may say what he wants...I do not agree and I am shock to see such divisions in society.....so the bitter truth is Chennai has a whole bunch of IT companies, but people have such narrow minded ideas.....it was disgusting

koolsadhu, you know I agree with you. I am not talking about the story of SP in general--just this one particular incident. In this case, Saloni did show strength in standing up to those dreadful people, and fighting for a total stranger. She did the right thing and it was not an easy thing to do.

Standing up to her own family is such a stretch that I don't even really care to think about it. It's just never going to happen. All serials are like this, and will never change.

The point I was trying to make is that it saddened me that so many people really didn't know that things like this still happen, and act as though India has moved on from this, when in fact this is how millions of Indians live.

Ramas , i wud like to add sumthing here . Like u , i too wud be happy to see Saloni fighting these issues but not just outside ............even at home . Tara , Kaveri , or some stupid maasis who come and go shud not be allowed to do rampant injustice and insult women just coz they r personal relations [ samdhansaa and bhabhisaa .........😡 ].............but they shud be given same treatment by Saloni that she gave to that parbat Singh [ that Mustachio] outside .
Parbat Singh insulted woman so he was jumped on , right ? Then Why in the world when barren women and infertile women were being horribly insulted was Saloni so quiet ? Were Lali and Tara honouring women ? I felt personally offended when i saw this ...........as someone very dear to me faced infertility problem for 9 years and faced terrible discrimination like being excluded from ceremonies etc. It was so horrid , only I spoke up for her , even my mom kept quiet afraid of social pressure and elderly ladies .The only excuse for the keeping quiet business was that they were elder in age .............and I wondered and wondered so ???? R they allowed to wreak havoc just coz they r big in age ?
How many women who faced infertility saw this serial and how many were perhaps still infertile as they watched the dialogue that yes perhaps Laali is right from ages they r excluded so there must be a reason ???? What must they be feeling ?
And how come in these stupid serials its always the woman who is infertile .............isnt there such a thing as an infertile male in India ? With a low sperm count or only X chromosomes.........like Suryakant , just producing female child ? It is not woman who produces female child........it depends on the male's sperm ! Why r these blunt biological facts never shown in serials ? And if the man is infertile ..............hundred percent they will show adoption as an option , not the second marraige of woman , the devi !!!!! A Surya or yuvraj can marry second time or Brij can have Jiji as surrogate but will they show Tara having sex with Brij's permission with another man just for procreation if he is shown infertile? No ! But yes , Tara can have this mentality to tolerated this as she is a devi woman !!!
This Devi mentality isnt devi mentality at all .............its insult to women . They shud show someone asking Saloni how come she pounced on Parbat Singh and each time let Tara go . What has Parbat Singh done that Tara hasnt ?

rainabow thats why i agreeed totally with u . I know wat point ur making and i fully agree .
There is an India of IT professionals , discos , reality shows , stock markets ................and also an India where still dowry is demanded , where still mother in law wields the power to send her bahu back to her maayka if displeased , second marraiges take place if woman is barren but never if man is barren , and where people walk for miles to fill water from wells as they dont have connnection for taps at home . I have seen and lived in this India . Once , on a trip in Konkan Goa region , on the spur of the moment we decided to visit an old family servant of my cousin who was with me who lived in that region , and the poor chap was highly embarassed as he cudnt even give us tea as there was no water and they had to walk for some miles each day to bring water from a well . There were tears in his eyes as he cud not do the basic etiquette for guests.....offering tea , and we were aghast to see that this was how he lived after his retirement . On the way back to our jeep , we noted a ramshackle house with some public board and asked him wat it was and he said it was the village school...........only till the fourth standard ! The only one in the village ! So many years of independence and progress and his village was still remote , still unaffected . We gave the poor chap money and requested him to come back and work for us , not to live like this , but the saddest part is that these poor people have such a code of honour that they refuse money from guests !
So Sawari , the flour water she drank instead of milk r true ............very true stories . In my mom's maayka , a remote village , many women labourers did the same thing i have seen it with my own eyes . I have even seen Laali Maasis . [ And replied back to them to the horror of my mom ]...............All of this does exist . My only point is make Saloni fair , not hypocritical..............loving Tara and shouting at Parbat Singh the Mustachio .

dear we can choose our huby but not our saas and nanad and sassor or devrani jethani.etc and trust me every house has either kaveri jiji kali. I have been subjected to all kinds of torture from my in laws. They will also tell lies to my huby behind my back . You don't need outsiders to toruture you. .
I exactly know how it feels to be humiliated and torturued by our own.It is also hard to forget . These things leave emotional scars that never heals.
My brother's college friend was subjected to pouring gasoline on her by her saas and huby they were about to burn her alive right here in houston. Finally one day she ran away from house and I only heard from her only once.
I too was in bad situation and was unable to help her except provding her moral support.

I am very sorry to hear about this ramas .....about u and ur friend . Even I have seen all this....and perhaps thats the reason i feel so strongly about this and speak so heatedly . My own eldest sister was thrown out of the house by her in laws in her fifth month of pregnancy . Prior to that for 5 years she was ill treated as she cud not conceive immediately after marraige and when she did conceive , she was thrown out as her mother in law was by then totally under her jethani's control . But my dad was very firm .....he told her to do job . He said that was the real strength.....for the moment he wud give her support but what wud happen after he died ? And so , my sister , who had polio in her left arm , did job and stayed seperately . Not with us , nor with in laws .
And this is wat i call real solution . In this case it was given by my dad who was a male ......not by some feminist organization . In TV serials they show no solution......only suffering . My mom did not agree but kept quiet before horrid elders , but my dad , who was immensely broadminded , once gave a woman my sister's baby for holding and putting in the cradle in a naming ceremony when the elderly women made a hoo haa and said only a fertile woman is allowed to do so . He said by coming in contact with an infant infact she will lose her infertility and conceive soon . Such were his thoughts and i respected them . And when i see women.....not men , but women doing such blatant injustice and Saloni tolerating it I feel maha irritated . Women injustice touches me on the raw .
Hope u never suffer again dear .
