The western touch that ARR brought to his songs with the complex arrangement of music is what did it for him IMO. And i do like the songs in Vansh ... very much ... but listen to the music (not vocals) and u will see where ARR succeeded. IR's songs tended to concentrate more on vocals and lyrics thereby sounding melodious. And i cant choose between the two as both have given songs close to my heart!
And post Roja the Tamil movies (and their songs) being dubbed into Hindi suddenly increased and gained prominence and hence many other ARR scores gained popularity ... though pudhiya mugham was actually recreated in hindi and was utterly forgettable!!! Then ARR came on strong with Rangeela on the Bwood scene and suddenly there was no need of his Tamil songs which explains why some of his later scores albeit good are not so popular as Roja!
Abt him being a legend, not very sure if we can call only him that! Like others pointed out JL and SEL are too ... and even ID with his very few but exceptional scores!

i agree..IR has given some very gud songs....Main to diwani hui is a very melodious number.......🙂
I like ID very much too..Inspite of giving music for only a few movies, his songs are extremely good.....again a distinct style...an unpredictable style of tune and music.......As in,with his, songs it is difficlt to predict how the tune is going to move on.....exceptional indeed.......👏🏻
SEL and JL come next to these two,in my opinion....they are very good but not of the class of ARR and ID....oc,one very good thing abt both is that they have captured the art of giving commercially successful tunes without compromising music quality....hats off to all the above MDs for that ........thank god they didn't turn into HRs 😆😆😆........

AR Rahman is a legend , the one who also brought up Kailash Kher. His simplicity reminds me of Rafi Shaab.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

HR has changed his fulltime composing job to parttime..Otherwise he would have been the legend..beating all talented, xyz..whatever best quality other music directors might be having.....
We need to understand what makes a legend!
Something extra-ordinary, sometimes looks like miraculous happening...
Everyone under the Son will say that HR is nothing if compare dto talents like IR, ARR, and others..But can anyone explain the phenomenon behind his success inspite of the shortcomings explained by all and sundry...
So started what was in fact making of a Legend, But alas! he left it midway..😉

hi Rock n roll I am loving your debate but must say just like RD B in North Indian music it was Ilaya Raja and NOT ARR who brought western music into Tamil music, here read on from wiki:

Impact and musical style

Ilaiyaraaja was one of the early Indian film composers to use Western classical music harmonies and string arrangements in Indian film music.[22] This allowed him to craft a rich tapestry of sounds for films, and his themes[23] and background score gained notice and appreciation amongst Indian film audiences.[24] The range of expressive possibilities in Indian film music was broadened by Ilaiyaraaja's methodical approach to arranging, recording technique, and his drawing of ideas from a diversity of musical styles.[22]

According to musicologist P. Greene, Ilaiyaraaja's "deep understanding of so many different styles of music allowed him to create syncretic pieces of music combining very different musical idioms in unified, coherent musical statements".[3] Ilaiyaraaja has composed Indian film songs that amalgamated elements of genres such as pop,[25] acoustic guitar-propelled Western folk,[26] jazz,[27] rock and roll, dance music (e.g., disco),[28] psychedelia,[29] funk,[30] doo-wop,[31] march,[32] bossa nova,[33] flamenco,[34] pathos,[35] Tamil folk/traditional,[36] Afro-tribal,[37] and Indian classical.[38]

By virtue of this variety and his interfusion of Western, Indian folk and Carnatic elements, Ilaiyaraaja's compositions appeal to the Indian rural dweller for its rhythmic folk qualities, the Indian classical music enthusiast for the employment of Carnatic ragams,[39] and the urbanite for its modern, Western-music sound.[40]

Although Ilaiyaraaja uses a range of complex compositional techniques, he often sketches out the basic melodic ideas for films in a very spontaneous fashion.[7][3] The Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam illustrates:

"Ilayaraja (sic) would look at the [film] scene once, and immediately start giving notes to his assistants, as a bunch of musicians, hovering around him, would collect the notes [(musical parts)] for their instrument[s] and go to their places... A [film] director can be taken by surprise at the speed of events."[41]

what ever you hear right from harmonic progression to heavy violin orchestra( thiruda thiruda title theme: do you know Ismail Darbar was lead violinst here) was brought by IR saab.

ARR took it to a new height of sound arrangement, mixing extreme technology into music but at times as some claim rasa went missing.

May also add that even the biggest MDs have failed in giving appropriate scores in period films and ARR has succeeded not once but number of times namely - 1947 Earth, Lagaan, Zubeidaa, JA - all songs may not become a legend but they are all in sync with the times & not one sounds out of place (a terrible recent example for this could be Asoka!)
Also ARR has excelled in movie background scores - something which not many (even legendary) MDs have been able to deliver...

NO my dear RD Burman has given great music in period movies like Ijazzat, Kinara ad many others similarily who can forget IR's music in movies like Sadma and ek aur prem kahani, just listen to them and you will know ehat rasa is in music. And how can you forget the great music of Rudali, Lekin they are all period movies but the current gen is unaware.

Among all Hindi composers it was Anand Milind who made a feast on IR's songs and made a living out of it, let me give you a complete list.

Poor IR never got credited.

agree wit u've said here...IR was the first to bring in western music in tamil songs....IR is nothing less than a genius...As i understand,he has never formally learnt any type of music-western or classical..yet he composes songs based on ragas perfectly......he understands, uses and dictates notes in western music to musicians......maybe he grasped this from his experience in composing....but it is really amazing..hats off to him......👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻He almsot singlehandedly ran the tamil film industry for more than a decade and anything he touched truned to gold.....If 5 tamil movies were released at a time, almost all of them had IR as the MD....this is a huge achievement coz he was never accused of monoploy...so obviously,he did not block new MDs...directors just preferred to use IR for his music......but it is a fact that his songs were not as popular as ARR world over.......he is a legend in himself......
So my point is not that IR not a genius....nor is my point that ARR introduced western music in movies( he didn't).....My point is that ARR with his use of technical stuff and music arrangement etc changed the face of hindi/tamil songs entirely.......maybe IR was using music arrangement earlier on too(dunno abt that)...but if he was, then he probbaly wasn't using it as effectively...ARR used it very effectively to create a new style..........till then film music was following a set style........ARR songs changed that.....and becoz his music offered something new from all film songs(irrespective of language),the songs became popular thus making him the first MD to cross language barriers......My point is only that becoz he crossed these barriers and becoz he brought something new and different to hindi music,he deserves his legendary status.......I compare with RDB coz RDB also changed the face of Hindi music......with songs from teesri manzil, jawani diwani, etc he introduced a new style of music...
On a lighter note, regarding ARR transcending the language barrier, another reason for this is that he placed so much importance on the background music and instrument use that the lyrics of the song cld often not be understood by anyone(even a person who knew the language😉).......so obviously his songs wld transcend the language barrier.....jab kisi ko bhi words samajh nahin aa rahe hain to kya problem hai?sab barabar hain😆😆😆.........In a positive light,it was not important to understand the lyrics to enjoy his song.......so in a very positive light(😉),it meant he cld bring out the mood of the song thru the music alone(which is very good)🙂

didn't know that ID was the violinist in thiruda thiruda..no wonder i like ID's music so much too..i guess I am just inclined towrads this type of music.....😀
yes,in ARR's songs(sometimes) the rasa went missing.......it happens in all innovations(whether music/science/art)..new things don't always work well.......RDB's songs were also accused of being too westernised and it was said that he cldn't compose soulful numbers....At least, this is what critics said abt RDB during his heyday...today if someone says this ppl wld laugh.........😀
ARR,though known as a technical wizard, has alos composed melodious numbers with importance to singers and (understandable and lovely) lyrics-kannodu kaanbathellam(jeans),ennavale( kadhalan),malargale(love birds),madhuban mein kanhaiyya(lagaan),man mohana(the recently releasad Jodha akbar),nenje nenje( rakshagan),sahara pookal(sivaji),narumugaiye( iruvar),chanda re(sapnay)......the list is endless...almost every movie of his has one song where attention is paid to m pure melody and background scores take a backseat.......so he mixes technicalities with melody...though in the proces sometimes technicalities become over powering in some songs
