I have read lot of times people posting Sonu is the best singer in India. However much I like Sonu I just want to ask people is India only Bollywood and Mumbai?Arent there other singers in other parts of India.?

Same way they say Lata Mangeskar is Sakshat Ma Saraswathi. She is a gret singer but when people go to these extreme heights I keep wondering why cant they be realistic. Can MS Subbalaksshmi who sang more bhakthi geets be Ma Saraswathi?

I agree with the logic definitely. There are surely much better singers or maybe at par singer like Sonu too.But this term is used maybe because when it comes to bollywood it becomes wide spread. For example say in bengal music industry there are many singers who can be said to be at par with Sonu....same may go for the South too.But how many around the Nation know about them....they mainly become regional singers. But because Bollywood is widespread across the nation so this term get used on regular basis.

As far as Lataji and MS Subbalaksmiji goes i would cant agree with u more. Frankly i personally would call MS Subalaksmiji as Saraswati rather than Lata. But it has nothing to do with singing maybe....its more out of the respect i hv for her. Maybe thats much more than what i hv for Lataji.

Its more because of the popularity.. The same thing can be questioned for movies, lyricists and MDs too.. There are other part of India where we get to watch better movies and listen to better songs.. But the whole idea here is they are not more popular than the mainstream bollywood.. Now we ask about Sonu or Himesh in south, they will know.. But you ask about Karthick or Unni Krishnan in north, there will be hardly people who will know them..

Its also because Hindi is our national language and everyone are interested to learn the national language and watch Hindi movies and listen to bollywood songs.. Outside India too, bollywood is more popular because the platform is huge and they make shows all over the places.. Bollywood can spend money on all these and get it popular while thats not the case with regional movies.. They usually stick to that particular region and do not move out..

What I had to say, Barnalidi has already explained so clearly.

I also have the same sentiments as far as MS Subbalaxmi ji and Lata Ji goes. They both are immensely good, but I respect MS Subbalaxmi ji more.

KJ Yesudas is a name to reckon with in the south. His hindi songs are also gems, but how many do remember him when we discuss about teh musical greats? Same with other regional language singers.Actually bollywood is more global and therefore in spotlight. There are so many other singers from the regional scene, but simply due to this focus and familiarity with Bollywood they get overshadowed.

As far as playback singing goes there is no argument that Lataji is the best. But if you say as a singer , we really do not know who could be called to have been best. Then we have to consider across classical singers as well. And you tend to call the singers who have got more publicity as the best but there are singers who are great but they are not publicised much.

And singing only devotional songs can give reverence not just because of your singing skill , your opinions and impressions will be colored by other factors due to obvious reasons.

There's a tendency to label bollywood as 'Indian cinema'. Although Indian cinema consists of films of more than 15 languages, none of it is as large and widespread as Hindi films ie, bollywood.
Thus Amitabh Bachan and Shahrukh Khan become super stars of Indian cinema and Chiranjeevi & Rajnikanth become superstars of Telugu and Tamil cinema.

Whatever related to bollywood becomes 'Indian' and others become regional. It's a question of popularity and coverage.
