There was one line which used to baffle me when I had still not experienced "love" 😳
"Aap ko dil mein bithaa lu to chale jaaiyega" from the song "Theheriye hosh mein aa lu".

But later it made a lot of sense. 😆

lol, yeah...a very unpleasant metaphor though I would hardly call Sameer a poet. But there's something likeable about that song for me. Maybe the beat...or the fact that there was an awesome dance to it on Nach Baliye.

Gulzar's lyrics don't make sense to me many times. Like this one:

"Jab taarein zameen par jalte hain
Aakaash zameen ho jaata hain" from the song "Do deewaane sheher mein" in Gharonda.

Omg, no offence to anyone, but what a pointless song. Well sung and melodious though. I'm going to let someone else try to dissect it first.

I understand the meaning, but even I don't understand the point.

One thing's for sure. Un do deewanon mein se ek zaroor shayar hoga. 🤔

Make that three.

And actually, that reminds me of another song without meaning.

'Saathiya, saathiya, maddham maddham teri geeli hasi
Saathiya, saathiya, sun ke hum ne saari pee li hasi'

Not sure if 'pee li' here refers to 'drank' or 'yellow', but it doesn't make sense either way.

wow...great examples and explanations

But yes Im really irritated of ppl using double plurals like- haalaaton, jazbaaton also yesterday while watching Saregamapa, I heard Sonu singing
"Main agar kahoon tumsa haseen, Qaayenaat mein nahin hai kahin"

While the word is Kaayenaat that is "Kabootar waala Ka" and not "Qayamat waala Qaaf", So many times have I heard of singer making a word more "URDU" even when its not required.

In Aandhi Kishore kumaar sings- "Tere bina zindagi se koi ShiQwa to nahin" whereas Lata mangeshkar says it simply and correctly- Shikwa.

similarly the word Kaamyaab is not Qaamyaab , as Sonu loves it saying. I wonder why dont the lyric writers point it out to the singers.

Omg, thank God I'm not the only one who noticed those! Yes, the Qayanaat is really irritating, as much as I like that song. It's really not the singers' fault...they can't be expected to know perfect Urdu...but the lyricists should listen to the songs to make sure they are sung correctly.
