What is the secret behind your melodious voice? When you talk, we feel like it is the cute voice of a small girl.
It is a God's gift for me. I don't have anything else to say. I thank Him to bless me with such a gift that I can sing at this age and that also for young actresses. I pray to God to continue showering His blessings on me.
So you don't take any credit for your efforts and rehearsals?
When I sing any song, I fully concentrate on that song. I give my hundred percent to it. If I feel that I am not performing well, I cancel the recording but do not give a bad performance.
Do you have any special star that you would love to sing for?
I do not have any such preferences. I love to sing something unique and good, with good lyrics and melodious music.
Which was the last film that you saw?
The last film that I saw was Munnabhai MBBS. It is a very nice film. I liked the performance of Gayatri, Sanjay and Arshad Warsi. In fact I like Arshad Warsi in all his films. He is a very good actor and will make it big one day.
What do you have to say on the old remixes? There are so many songs that are being remixed. Do you think that the new singers will maintain the same standard of singing?
I am basically against the idea of remaking old films and remixing old music. The remake of a film like Sholay, according to me is not a good idea. Sholay is a film that should not have been touched. Film like Sholay can be made only once.
Do you feel that a comparison can be made between old time singers like Naushadji and the new comers like A.R.Rehman and the gang, since you have sung with both of them?
One can never compare the two; it is actually a generation change. The old singers will definitely have an upper hand in this. Their work is incomparable. Naushadji had his unique different style. In the same manner, R.D. Burman and others had their own style. I believe if the new comers had made their own style, they would have made a mark with these old timers. Unfortunately this has not happened till now.
Except for Rehman and few select music directors, nobody would dare to come to you for singing in their film, is that so?
If I like the song, if I like the lyrics and if it has something unique in it, I will definitely sing for any music director. I don't have any special choice of person. I have a choice for the songs. I get many offers but I listen to the song first before singing. I have now decided to do very few select songs. I have worked with Adnan because I loved the song. It was a very good song. So as I said, I have a preference for song and not for person.
You also love travelling and London is one of your favourite destinations. Which other place excites you?
My favourite getaway is actually Panhala, about 12 kilometres from Kolhapur. It's a beautiful fort city built by Shivaji Maharaj and I enjoy spending time there.
There was a huge controversy surrounding your comment on shifting from Mumbai and staying elsewhere?
I've been living in my present house for over 50 years. But tell me, is it necessary to continue living there forever? Don't I have the right to buy another flat in Mumbai? So many people buy a second house and nobody has a problem, but when I do so, a controversy is created.
Lastly about your cricket passion how difficult is to see India losing a match?
You know when I know India is losing, I seem to get intuition right from the beginning and always avoid watching those matches. Sachin, Shewag and Dhoni are my favourite but I have a complain that they are doing too many advertisements.
Any albums that you are working on?
My new album is titled Swaranjali and is ready for release, it is done in association with my jewellery brand Adora. The album has original ghazals composed by Mayuresh Pai. I had previously worked with Mayuresh Pai on an album of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's poems.
