To his credit, he has added his own style to the song, rather than stick note by note with the original. And some of his changes are in keeping with the current trend of remixes and Gen-Next flavor. The few extra additions have added a bit of zing to the song (not that the original was less zingy, but it was 30 years ago). Asha ji's voice is a great plus in this song - I'm glad we got to hear her rendition. Yes, Himesh's oooooo gets on a bit, but if we get over that, he hasn't done a bad job, while singing in his own style. And to his credit, he let Asha ji sing the majority of the time. Even the credits list Asha ji as the main singer. Himesh sang because he had to sing.
Let's not forget that when this song came out originally, it riled all the purists no end. It was hailed by experts as the beginning of the downfall of Indian music, and many even refused to speak to Panchamda after what he'd done. However, the generation of that time loved it, and they ensured it would be a big hit. The rest, then, is history.
Even not too long ago, on this very forum, someone shared Himesh's 'Ae Meri Zohrajabeen'(I think it was Appaji then too 😛 ). The reactions then were as bad as the ones in this post, and Himesh was said to have murdered that song too. But, apart from the very knowledgeable people of this forum, most others seemed to like it. It was a big hit, and it became the promotional song for the movie. (It was also sung by Sameer in Lil Champs and got him 3 A+'s).
I don't know if the same will happen here, but I have a feeling this song is going to be lapped up by the youth.
