Thanks for all this Barnali. A few years back, I bought a special edition of Madan Mohan's CDs in which some of these songs and more have been featured.

Madan Mohan had composed a different version of "Dil dhoondta hain" which was not used. But that tune got used in Veera Zara in "Tere liye". It's funny but whenever I hear "tere liye" now, I actually hum "Dil dhoondta hain" in the same tune.

The CD also contains an introduction by Madan Mohan to every song which is very sweet to listen to. He talks about how and why he composed a certain tune. For example, he says that he gave a great deal of thought to the right raga for 'tu jahan jahan chalega' and finally settled for Nand.

There is also one where MM sings 'Humsafar saath apna chod chale' from 'Aakhri Daao', before it merges with Rafi's rendition of the same song. But, what I really liked is the way he has explained how he composed 'Saawan ke mahine mein, ik aag si seene mein' from 'Sharaabi'. About the right ambience having been created - rain, wine and the company of loved ones 😊 . I particularly love the way he speaks Hindi - very much like Sohrab Modi (whose Hindi is also very sweet).

Oh yes, he describes the setting for composing this song very well.

I find it very suprising. Yash chopra had just started during Madan mohan's time. yash Chopra is always refered to be one having a very good ear for music. but he never used Madan mohan then. he always used LP instead. and now he used tunes of Madan mohan in Veer Zaraa.

This proves one thing. just good music did not help these MD's. There were also the backings, the word by a famous and influential showbiz person. however, luck also played a very important role. And who can control luck?

Good observation about Yash Chopra. Imagine preferring LP over MM!

Oh how did I miss this before.. This is absolute delight.. I had never heard MM before.. Thanks a lot did for sharing your treasure 😊

Wonderful comment on Yash Chopra's ear for music! The sad part is the other day I was watching some program on MM on one of the music channels - many of his gems were not featured, while 'Jaanam dekh lo' and 'Tere liye' both were featured 😕 That was very dissapointing for me!

WOW!!! Really good observation must say. This never came to my mind too.

And Sahana is right. There simply arise no comparision between LP and Madan Mohan!!! And with his good ears for music who knows maybe we lost some good music of this duo... that is if they had worked together.

If melody was the keyword back then, how is it that MM got overlooked? and a great observation on Yash Chopra. For a person wiith good ears for music, how could he not like what he heard?

Nice observation di, Looks like Yash Chpra was very young and may not have wanted to "experiment" with a quality musician and rather went by popular musician..But Madan Mohan is quality and longevity all the way..
