A Few weeks ago we had a discussion on a MOTW thread about age, membership on the forums etc, some people got offended. I still hold my POV, the Point I was trying to convey is very well explained in this thread by Priyaji, Please do take a moment to read it

https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/members-lounge/481082/important-all-members-must-read

Moderators, you can get rid of the thread, if you beleive this is unappropriate, my request, make the link by Priyaji mentioned here Global Sticky

i so agree with on this one...i kno alot of ppl are not hesitant to reveal their age and location...little do they know..hahaha...as for child prodigy many will claim that they are and many will hop on the bandwagon and agree with them!

Taran, if Moderators start taking care of each and every member who logs into IF, we might as well forget we have a personal life outside this forum, that we have a chosen vocation to fulfill and some dreams and aspirations of our life to complete and some milestones to cross.

Amongst all that, we do make the time, like all of you, to come to the forum for some fun. In this process, we got assigned certain additional duties and responsibilities as well of keeping an eye on the forum to ensure it is filth free, spam free, chat free and that the forum remains contextual. As members grew, responsibilities grew too and we do try our best.

But self moderation is indeed the best and most effective way of doing this. It is important for every member to know that the virtual world is not the happy place it is perceived to be and every page comes filled with potential threat and danger. We can cite them as examples, show instances to members and hope that they imbibe this.

Again, Moderators cannot take the place of parents, neither can the moderators control what the member does.

Someone suggested that members below a particular age be banned, so that they cant come on IF anymore. I say IF is still reasonably safer than other forums and if they are banned here, they can simply hop to the next forum, which may or may not be safe and which may or may not be moderated. As long as they are here, we can keep an eye and guide them. U as a vigilant member can do the same.

Ultimately, it is for the family/ parents to also excercise precaution. This message is for both Parents and children. If your children are home alone, you need to caution them on the dangers of life. Dont you teach them not to open doors to strangers and not to talk to strangers. The same philosophy needs to be applied on the virtual world as well. They need to remember NEVER TO OPEN THE PRIVATE DOORS OF THEIR LIVES ON THE INTERNET.

Techies and more knowledgeable people on the forum are aware of child locking systems on the internet whereby the parents can maintain a log of the childs activities, where websites need to take parental approval for children below a particular age etc. I would urge all parents reading this message to also take note of it and take proper precautions. If each one of us do it and make it a habit, we can spread the word around and spread the awareness too.

Thanks Priya and Sareg, guys it is not scary story it is the reality and kids here in forum should learn from this, why only kids, we elders should also learn from this story. Everybody has different nature, some people irrespective of age simply can not lie and expose their identity and privacy on internet. Priya, I think you opened eyes of many members here in this forum through this story, Some of us opposed other when they raised their voices against making a kid an MOTW and we termed it as age discrimination. I kept quite that time because I was busy but it was really painful to see the arguments from so many mature members in favor of making a 12 year old as MOTW. It is more painful if somebody are being called as moral police, and see in the story how a moral police saves life of a kid. Everybody take care and think about himself/herself but very few people think about other. We all support our friends here in forum without thinking about the consequences and issues. After seeing how the elders are being treated here I stopped talking sense in forum but today Priya's thread compelled me to write sensible stuff.
It is my personal request to younger members:
1. Never expose your identity on forum or internet to anybody irrespective of how good a person is on forum/internet. You don't know 1 of 100 may be a wrong person and unfortunately you might be trapped by that person.
2. Don't be scared, it is just the reality and follow some internet rules.
3. We are not against your participation in forum, but if somebody try to get identity, report that to Mod/Admin team and your parents.

For Mod team:
This forum is one of the nicest forums, and I really appreciate your effort to keep it clean and friendly, but my request for you is please maintain good thing and ethics. If you think this post is not appropriate according to IF rules then delete it.

This post is not against anybody, if you still feel so then sorry.

Jadoo ji,

Thanks for the post. No it is not wrong or inappropriate, so no fears on that.

But I would like you to keep two things clear.

One is spreading awareness and allowing the respective member to make a choice on what he/ she should do.

Two is forcing a thought process on them, whereby you make them accept something, which is likely to make them rebel.

When not made a MOTW, many (young) members have quit the forum or expressed their dissatisfaction.

What is MOTW? Know your fellow member.

If WE, as mature senior adult members can pose such questions which are relevant and proper for members of that age, we can control the kind of questions being put on MOTW?

What is the guarantee that the member who claims to be 12 is indeed 12 and not a 52 year old coming to have fun at the expense of members or for that matter stir some trouble.

Recently we found that soem member posing as a male was a female actually.

EVERYOEN MUST READ THIS MESSAGE. everyone must understand the pitfalls of the internet. Every parent at home must guide their children appropriately before exposing them to the world of the internet and install such safety "virtual locks" in place to protect THEIR children.

In the virtual world, we can do upto a certain extent and beyond that when we do things, we get LABELLED AS MORAL POLICE. And jadoo ji, if we sat here 24 x 7 to monitor what happens, we may have to bid adieu to our real lives and career as well.

Manish has posted a good bye on the forum, recently Anol too indicated that pressures of the real life are more pressing than virtual. We too have similar issues. Moderators are here to help you, but YOU must help yourself too. Only then can we work together.

I hope you do not misunderstand.
