What happens when faith and spirituality collide with relationships and existentialism? Banaras - A mystic love story is said to explore this complex question.

Directed by Pankuj Parashar, the film features Urmila Matondkar, Naseerudin Shah, Raj Babbar, Dimple Kapadia and Ashmit Patel.

Agreed, the subject, setting and cast are exciting. But what is even more interesting is Parashar's choice of a mainstream music director like Himesh Reshammiya for the soundtrack. To his credit, the Aashiq Banaya singer-composer does forego his chartbuster image and treads a new track.

The album opens with Reshammiya in a mellow, almost unrecognisable self, gently crooning to Kitna Pyaar Karte Hain. Although his voice doesn't suit the personality of the song, his attempted sincerity meets with half-hearted approval. The loveliness of the tune does come into its own during Alka Yagnik's version of the same though.
Ishq Mein Dilko is another slow paced, romance-filled melody. But, for all its starry-eyed charm, the song is not nearly addictive.
Holi may be over and done with, but the colours refuse to die down in Rang Dalo. Vibrancy booms in the voices of Shreya Ghosal and Sonu Nigam in this standard Holi number replete with burdensome beats and a boisterous chorus. Hindi film songs adhere to a tried and tested format for situational music. It's time someone broke the rules and created something unpredictable.

Pranab Kumar's classical recital of the popular thumri, Bajooband Khul Khul Jaaye is stimulating beyond words. It has previously been performed by the likes of Lata Mangeskar and Jagjit Singh to mesmerising effect.

Up next, Ghosal takes a safe route for Purab Se. Her rendition is delicate enough, but the song would have worked better if she had provided it some drama. The USP of Yeh Shaan Hai Banaras Ki is Sivamani's scintillating play of drums. Sanjeev Abhyankar's colourful and enlightening introduction of the city with many names (Kashi, Varanasi) goes in perfect tandem with the inspiring beats.
Although Reshammiya gets brownie points for trying to be different, he fails to capture the sacred rush of Banaras' air or the enigmatic profundity of spiritualism.

The music composer refuses to share sound space with Himesh Reshammiya in T series film
Subhash K Jha.

* I'm not trying to make a career as a singer

* Anu Malik spits venom at fellow musician Himesh Reshammiya

Professional rivalry and a fall-out had been brewing between Himesh Reshammiya and Anu Malik for some time now. But the fracas has come on faster than one imagined. It was bad enough for Anu that Himesh Reshammiya's numbers were riding high on the charts and he subsequently walked away with all the popular awards this year. But the final blow to Anu's pride was delivered when T Series brought together Himesh and Bhushan Kumar's sister Tulsi Kumar for an added song in the Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif romance Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, a film for which Anu was composing music.

"I've had issues earlier with people like David Dhawan and Mukesh Bhatt for bringing other composers into the picture," says Anu.

"But I was given to understand that the whole score in Humko Deewana….is mine. In fact, I never do soundtracks where I have to share sound-space with others. How was I to know that a song will be added after the release of the album?"

Anu admits that Himesh's number came as a shock to him. "I had no idea this was coming. I've now decided to get a written contract with every producer; this will ensure no other composer being brought in at the last minute. I've spoken to Harry Baweja about it. I told him I'll do his son's Love Story 2050 only if I have it in writing that I'll be the only music composer. Harry is a sweet man. He understood what I've gone through."

"It's very clear that T Series is promoting one music director only. I wish them all the best," adds Anu. "I'm happy with my daal-chawal. I don't want biryani. I'm not looking for a career as a singer. In fact, after this incident I went to Bhushan Kumar and asked him to cancel my contract with T Series."

The music director had recently signed a three-year contract with the music company as composer and singer for non-film albums. "As I said I'd rather focus on my composing career right now. So this incident (with T Series) has been a blessing in disguise. It has helped me to get my priorities right. I don't want to do private albums. Not when J.P. Dutta's Umrao Jaan is around the corner. At this point in my career, I'm looking to compose for the likes of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra. I wouldn't have been able to do so if I had to divert my energies to private albums."

Reacting to Anu's outburst, Himesh replies, "I've the highest regard for Anuji. He's my senior and I've been deeply impressed by his track record. I've no interest in poaching on anybody else's domain, least of all Anuji's. I agreed to do the song for the promotional video of Humko Deewana Kar Gaye only after T Series showed me the NOC (no objection certificate) from Anu-ji. If he had an objection to my song, then why did he give them an NOC?"

Meanwhile, Bhushan Kumar of T Series says, "We see absolutely no reason for Anuji to be upset with Himesh doing the promotional song. Does he say he had no choice but to give the NOC? I don't know what he means by that. There was no pressure on him to give the NOC. We're going to put out a new edition of the Humko…. soundtrack with Himesh's song in it."

He gave Vinit a lot of breaks. Vinit truly shines in Soniye and also "Tu he meri shaab hai suba hai" from gangster. Also all the various concerts. I think himesh has set him on the right track and is gonna propell him to success.

I like Himesh Reshammiya: A R Rahman

Music director AR Rahman, who gave splendid music in films like Dil Se, Saathiya, Taal, Swades and Rang De Basanti, says period movies give a music director an opportunity to learn and experiment.

"It also depends a lot on the director whether he wants the music of his movie according to the corresponding era or he is open to experimenting. Several musical instruments present today were absent in the past.

But still we can use them for making music for a historical provided it sounds good," Rahman told the entertainment portal bollywoodcountry.com.

Rahman has plenty of international projects in his kitty, including Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth II and Lord Of The Rings Musical.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q: Is it true that you are a fan of new music sensation Himesh Reshammiya?
A: Yes, I like one of his songs. The one called Aashiq Banaya Aapne.

Is Rehman out of Dasavatharam?
IndiaGlitz

The latest buzz is that sought-after Bollywood music-composer Himesh Reshammiya has been assigned to compose music for Kamal Haasan's Dasavatharam. He replaces A R Rehman, who turned down the offer following his earlier commitments in Bollywood.

Reshammiya, who tunes in recent Bollywood movies like 36 China Town, Phir Hera Pheri, Garam Masala have topped the charts, will be making his debut with Dasavatharam to Tamil.

It may be recalled that it was Kamal Haasan who had brought Shankar-Ehshaan-Loy to Kollywood with his Alavandhan.

Adding one more to the Bollywood music directors making their foray to Tamil film industry is Himesh Reshammiya.

Himesh Reshammiya Collaborates With Kamal Hassan
Tanya Palta July 07, 2006
Know More: Latest News
Looks like there is no escaping from the nasal obsessed singing of Himesh Reshammiya. This man is on fire and breaking all records (and a lot ear drums) with his unique (?) singing style which is an amalgamation of Filmi music, Sufi Music and a strange nasal twang. I do admit his songs are catchy and he is a great music composer but it is his singing which has always been the talk of the town.

Till now the South of India was blissfully unaware of the power of Himesh nostrils but all that's about to change as Kamal Hassan has signed him up for his new movie Dasavatharam, a Hindi-Tamil bilingual film. So this singing tornado is about to hit the shorelines of South India soon and remember we did warn you!

Let The Music Play

document.write('Aelina,') Aelina, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, July 11, 2006]

Wow, what a compilation! You can't help exclaiming it to yourself as soon as you come across this twin CD pack of one of the best compilations in recent times. A mix of Bollywood, Indi-pop, Paki-pop, US-pop and UK pop, 'Let The Music Play' is one of those albums that deserves to be in your music collections. With just about all the ingredients that are required to make a perfect assemble of songs, LTMP never once looses pace and mixes up different genres of songs well to result in a complete album.

Bollywood

Let's start with Bollywood numbers first. When you see songs from men like A.R. Rehman, Salim-Sulaiman, Sandeep Chowta and Himesh Reshammiya on the credits, you know that there is something special on the cards. And why not when you have superb tracks from 'Rang De Basanti' like the rocking title song 'Rang De Basanti' by Daler Mehendi and Chitra, back-to-school pop track 'Masti Ki Paathshala' by new finds Mohamed Aslam and Naresh Iyer, revolutionary track with a difference, 'Khalbali', sung with aplomb by Rahman himself along with Mohamed Aslam and the best song of the enterprise, 'Roobaroo', where Rahman and Naresh Iyer joined hands to come up with magic. No wonder one can't help but admire the work of Prasoon Joshi, the lyricist, who is the common thread along most of the songs from RDB!

Apart from 'Rang De Basanti', there is some rocking action in the form of 'Kaal' soundtrack by Salim-Sulaiman with all the three hits 'Tauba Tauba' [original and remix], 'Kaal Dhamaal' and 'Nassa Nassa' (by Anand Raj Anand) coming one after another. Yes, they indeed are rocking all over again and the effect is doubled when Sandeep Chowta's biggest hit 'Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo' [Dum] makes a place for itself in the album with as much as elan Rehman's 'Wo Kisna Hai' [Kisna]!

With Rehman, Salim-Sulaiman and Chowta having so much fun on the musical scene, how could Reshammiya be far behind? After all he is the trump card for any music company today and hence SONY too includes some of his hit tracks from 'Aitraaz' like 'Gela Gela Gela - The Dance On The Beach Mix' and 'I Want To Make Love (The Passion Mix)'. And yes, the songs belong to the times when Reshammiya was purely known as a composer and had never held the mike in front of his face! There is more to come from him in the form of other hits like 'Mohabbat Hai Mirchi' [Chura Liya Hai Tumne] and the remix version of 'O Soniya' [Ishq Hai Tumse]. In addition, the music company ensures that the colorful 'holi' number 'Rang Dalo' reaches out to audiences through LTMP at least since when it was released as a part of 'Banaras - A Mystic Love Story', there were hardly any buyers with both the music and the movie going unnoticed.

Indi and Paki pop

If a record compilation of Bollywood hits wasn't enough, there is more to come in the form of pop numbers from India and Pakistan. For the lovers of 'bhangra pop', there is a treat in store with Hans Raj Hans' hit 'Aaja Nach Le' and Amar Arshi's dance floor favorite 'Kaala Chashma'! Are you ready to hit the dance floor already? If so then pump up the volume since after a while you would have some soothing sound in the form of Strings' 'Dhaani'. And if you are willing to get into the groove again, there is return of Chowta with his Mallika in 'Mallika I Hate You'! With one feeling absolutely content already, the world of music couldn't have appeared better as Kailash Kher is heard all over again in his hottest track ever 'Teri Deewani'.

Western pop

With so much happening already in Bollywood and Indi/Paki pop scene, it was just fitting to have a dose of Western pop as well. This is something that you find in small, but apt dose, as the selection of 5 songs here is superb as well. First to come is Groove Armada's 'I See You Baby' that also graced the promotion of Kaizad Gustad's nightmarish 'Boom'. 'Don't Be Shy', a superhit already follows soon thereafter while Swami's 'Desi Rock' is a song to hit the dance floor again. It is time to rejoice when two of the biggest hits this year, Shamur's 'Let The Music Play' [in a way a title song for the album] and Sona Family's 'Glassy' mark and end of the album.

Wow, what an experience! Though one exclaimed in a similar manner at the beginning of the album on just reading the song titles, it is nothing but an endearing experience on actually hearing each of the 25 tracks one after another. A complete 'paisa vasool' album by all means, it deserves all the sales it is currently registering and has in it to sustain itself on the stands for weeks to come due to a lethal combination of quantity and quality!

Go for it and you will keep smiling while the album is on!

darwaza bandh rakho

Director: J.D. Chekravarthy
Cast: Chunky Panday, Isha Sharvani, Aftab Shivdasani, Snehal Dhabi, Zakir Hussain, Ishrat Ali

Fans of Himesh Reshammiya have some moments at least to look forward to. Too many of them, in fact, Himesh haters would groan. Which would be quite justified, considering the number of times his voice ooooes out every time a phone rings in this J.D. Chekravarthy's Darwaza Bandh Rakho. And like the doorbell, it rings endlessly, or so it seems, as the four kidnappers try to make a deal with Isha's father. Do not try too hard trying to figure out who's who as one by one the unsuspecting souls walk into Shantilal Kantilal whatever's house, and are promptly held hostage, too, along with Isha and Shantilal's family.

Chekravarthy wasn't really too off the track when he decided to trap a motley group of people under one roof. But after that, he seems to be totally clueless, not even sure if he wants to thrill the audience or make them laugh.

And one could have still forgiven him if he hadn't chosen Manisha Koirala as one of the people who walk into the house, and shatter our beautiful image of her. All those who keep hoping, till the credits confirm their worst fears, that it may actually be a poor Manisha duplicate (maybe the one from Ek Chhotisi Love Story), and not the sweet princess one has been seeing for years, can be in all fairness forgiven.
