Well, i dont know about you Mr Soulsoup, but i definitely canot claim to have heard all bands across the world, however big or small !

So a lot of good music goes by without ever being heard by me,of course your "global radar" might be far wider- that i cannot contest.

If a private deal is clinched between our directors and the foreign guys, i really dont have to know where the music came from. The director does not have to shout out loud that its not his original piece of work. After all, those guys are more bothered about money more than credit for their music.

Frankly, if the music is good,i will happily listen to it without bothering whether the music was born in Pritam s neurons or those of some unheard band from somewhere.

You mean to say - if someone can replicate / re-draw Monalisa (almost with the same perfection or even better) and sell it to you - just because you never can visit Louvre - it's OK and Ethical? 😕😕😕

Moreover - if the person claims that is HIS creation - there is NO problem at all?

Rather - come from the other side - what's unethical to you then? Where this boundary of 'ethics' delimits you?

Copyright only 20 years? 😕 No, I think Copyright is for the lifetime of the artist + 50 years more.

But, I see your point. Once the copyright is over, everyone uses it unless someone else registers a copyright for the song.

i enjoyed the film and the music of "gangster "very much..i am not going to judge myself for appreciating a borrowed work....or judge someone else....

let the music flow....if it makes my heart skip a beat great...i am not going to investigate if it is 100% original..so S.D. burman didnt put some unkown folk lyricist or musicians name on the album(likhne mai kya hai)..koi baat nahin..

i would like to hear an Nth version of" kesariya balam padharo mhare des..."who wants to sue or make money doesnt matter to me.....

GULZAR..was criticised severly for "chaiyyan chaiyyan' which he borrowed from a sufi song...hum bus sunnewalen hain, bas accha laga ...kanoon banana kisi aur ka kaam hai...Enjoy the music..

Ankita - when SD take Bhatiali tune and internalize it - that's inspiration!
Then all the raga based songs are copy too.

Can we compare that with note by note, beat by beat copy of Pritam and Anu Malik?

how do Plagerize in songs and music? 😕

No, there is no credit given. That is like copying someone else in an exam and getting full marks yourself. 😊

I was waiting for Appaji to give me the actual reply that was given to this statement in 'Majboor'. 😊

I agree. I don't see what's the problem in giving credit. Ask them first. If they refuse to let you use the song - then fine, steal it. 😉

By the way, if we start paying royalty to all the people we've ever been 'inspired' with, the Music Industry would go bankrupt. This goes all the way back to the Pancham da and LP and SJ days.

Then they would have a greater incentive to think for themselves and come up with something better to avoid bankruptcy. 😉

People pay for "inspirations" too. For example: Black Eyed Peas credited and paid Kalyandji-Anandji for 2 of their tracks...they used them in their Grammy winning single "Dont Phunk with my Heart" - frankly I didn't even see the similarity between the pieces, but I applaud them for it.

That is a highly unevolved, passive and non-discerning way of listening to music. As music listeners we need to widen our horizons, try to know about the origins of different music, and the influence of one type of music on another.

Well Punjini ji ,

All that you say is very true, yes theoritically it is, but music is only our passion not profession. Going to such depths as to search for origins, influences , for every song we hear, atleast for me ,is a near impossibility.

I listen to a good song , take it for its face value ,am not constantly suspicious of it being plagiarised, enjoy it and forget it.

If i discover by chance that the original composer is Bulgarian or Ethiopian, then hurrah for him. What can i do? I like the song and thats it.
