Yeah, I remember reading that back in the day she had monopolized the industry by saying that she would not sing for any movie unless all the female parts of the songs were given to her. New talent hardly had a chance to come up in that time.
But, forget about new SRGMP, I dont even remember her coming on the old SRGM as a judge. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I dont really see her promoting new talent that much.
I heard or read the same. That was the reason singers like Suman Kalyanpur and some others were being neglected by most music directors. But of course I don't know the actual fact.

U r right i suppose😕
"Agar aap pachas baar mera gaana ratenge to naturally usmein kuch aacha to niklega hi. But real talent comes from the fact that you sing original compositions in your own voice and get selected on that basis,"
Admitting cabarets to be the only type of film songs she consciously avoided, she says sister Asha Bhonsle was better suited than her for singing fast

I think there are other reasons for Suman Kalyanpur for not making her mark in the industry. She was not able to establish her own identity-- her voice was very similar to Lata-ji so she was always directly competing with her all the time.
Look at it this way -- when Rafi Saab and Kishore-da were dominating the scene in 50s, 60s, 70s, why was Mukesh-ji still getting many songs in non-RK non-Manoj Kumar movies ? Because he had a very unique voice that was entirelly different from Rafi saab and Kishore-da. So he never competed with them. Take any Suman Kalyanpur song and replace her voice with Lata-ji's and the song will sound same or better but can you imagine Mukesh-ji's O janewale, ho sake to laut ke ana or chal ri sajani ab kya soche from Rafi saab or Kishore-da? This were the songs that Dada specifically got Mukesh to sing even though he always went with Kishore-da and Rafi saab for all his other songs. Similarly can you imagine Rafi saab/Kishore-da singing Jane kaha gaye woh din, or kahi door jab din jaye, or o ho re taal mile nadi ke jal mein? Mukesh-ji, Manna-da, Mahendra Kapoor made their marks when Rafi/Kishore were dominating because their voices were different. MDs could use them for specific situation, for specific type of song. The same thing cannot be said about Suman Kalyanpur and other female singers of the golden era.
I really don't believe every thing media presented .. Some times it is the way of presentation that made some statements so horrible to read. Those are just written lines , tone can't be transmitted through that and on top of it .. never know what sentence was said before those lines and after thoses lines .. well this is a norm for mirch masala journalism.
So I think we should try to judge positively rather than jumping on an apparent negative aspect.
In a broad perspective, I will agree with you that indeed media has a way of twisting tales to suit their purpose and create sensationalism, for such news sells newspaper. Its all about money, so they do it.
But in the case of Lata Mangeshkar, some one had written earlier that she is indeed Maa Saraswati and the Nightingale of Hindi music etc.
I dont dispute that either. But fact remains that unlike the Goddess, this one is human, with a tendency for fallacies.
How much truth is there in the rumours of Vani Jayram and Suman Kalyanpur, today, we, the current generation will never find out for sure. But we can form our own opinions based on the whispers we hear of the days when she ruled the roost.
Lata is an institution her self so we should consider her opinion too especially related to singing and also we shouldn't forget that she represent the old school of thought were singing was not very much materialized and people usually gave all their life for singing and it was very sacred to them .
Agree. In fact, I would agree with her that the talent shows of today i.e. EMAT or the new format of SRGMP is nothing as good as the original SRGMP, which was indeed a Talent scout contest.
But then, instead of stopping at that, she has chosen to target the young budding talents. An institution by herself, she has chosen to give a sound byte to the effect that if someone rotes her songs and sings, thats not true contest for a contestant. How fair is that?
There is no doubt about the provision of plate form for new talent through such shows but if we consider purly from arts point of view it is not very good either even for themselves. For eg. few days back some one post a thread regarding former winners and what they were doing after the compition was over .. I read that most of them are doing stage program what ever and where ever available to them .. wedding , mall opening etc etc. I don't know much about the contract and bound details but I know that channel or program orginizers usually have their share in their income too. So these poor young people become a kind of money making machines for their respective channels usually go through tremendous amount of pressure which surely affect their personal life too. So what do you think .. will they be able to progress in their singing that well (consider the point of view of old school of thought in music).
Now come to the point of original songs. She is not very much wrong here too. Though I can directly jump on the negative point here as well but I can extract a very good positive point.
It is not always easy for every one to explore their voices at the very begining of their career let alone those kids participating in such contast. They usually dont know what expressions suit their voice and what don't they most of the time try to copy exactly the way original singer did. They simply practiced that way and by public voting got votes for it becasue people are use to of listening song by original artists and prefer the exact copy. The result is the develop the habit of copying and find their own style pretty late in their career.
Well, you do have a point. But then, what would you suggest.
Till a few years back, if you were a struggling musician, you had to have godfather or some backing in the profession for you to make a mark.
I have three friends from my college days who were keen on pursuing play back singing. During college days itself, they were performing in stage shows etc and had ample talent. But due to lack of contacts, one could not find a place in the industry. One has found a place for herself and another had to go away due to the low moral standards prevelant in the industry.
If there was such a talent show then, possibly these guys would have participated and one never knows where their destiny would have taken them.
One of the deterrant factors in their progress was the lack of contact, lack of mentors to guide them and no sponsors. No recording company will touch you till such time that you are a artiste of repute, forget getting lyricsts to compose good songs or a music director to compose music, which will help a budding artiste showcase his "talent".
Ofcourse it is not easy to provide each and every one a new composition but it is not impossible either to introduce such step at certain level. Another thing why not giving chance to new lyricists and new MDs at the same time of finding new singers. kari kuch original hosakta hay par baat wohi hoti hay naa kay phir public voting ka kia hoga ... paisa kaisay banay gaa 😉
