Watched Fanaa yesterday and was struck by the brilliant effect of that old Madan Mohan - Lata Mangeshkar number from "Woh Kaun thi?".

"Lag jaa gale se" has been sung so superbly by Lataji that you yearn for her voice these days amidst all these so-called singers who hide their voice behind the techno beats.

In Fanaa, the song appears in some of the delicate and sensitive moments. The emotional depth of the situation is crisply enhanced with the song hauntingly playing in the background.

Wah Madan Mohan Sahab! Wah Lataji!

Wah Madan Mohan Sahab! Wah Lataji!

You are quite right. 👏

While debate rages on about the 'original' score for the movie, older tracks were superbly used to bring about a subtle but distinct ambience to certain moments in the movie. The use of the older songs infused said moments with a poignancy that would have been possible but most difficult to execute without it

There are so many Lata - Madan Mohan numbers that I yearn to hear again and again even after 30-35 years. The magic of those songs never fades. Even after hearing those songs for thousands (and thousands) of time, I still play them and get into a different world altogether every time.......

Many of the films that MM gave music were B-grade and are know today only for the songs that he and Lata-ji made immortal.. Films like Adalat, Dekh Kabira Roya, Dil Ke Rahe, Haste Zakhm .. nobody would have remebered these names but for the songs like--

- Yun hasraton ke daag muhobbat mein dho liye-- Adalat
- Jana tha humse door bahane banay liye -- Adalat
- Rasm-e-ulfat ko nibhaye to nibhaye kaise -- Dil Ki Rahe
- Betab dilki tammana yehi hai -- Haste Zakhm.

Madan-ji passed away in 1975 when he was just 51. That year Mausam was released which had one of his memorable compositions...

ruke ruke se kadam ruk ke baar baar chale ...

Had Madan-ji lived longer we would have heard many many such beautiful songs...

It is said that MM had more than 500 tunes ready and recorded to be used. He was unfortunate not to be associated with a big banner the way SJ was (with RK Films --Raj Kapoor) and SDB was (with Navketan --Dev Anand) otherwise we would have heard many more gems from him. When Sanjeev Kohli (MM's son) told about these tunes to Yash Chopra, Yash-ji listened to them and decided to use them for Veer Zara but none of the songs of that movie could match the best of Madan-ji obviously because Madan-ji wasn't there to give them those finer finishing touches that made his songs so different from the rest...
