Yes Quest ji. That is what I am saying. it was struggle time for Asha ji as all others. Talent can easily hide in the dust if it does not get the right opportunity. Rest did not get a chance to work with a mentor like OP.
For being arrogant..may be it was Lataji who was arrogant and refused to work with him ......may be it was Asha ji that stopped working with him. It could very well be some terms that of OP too that they did not lke and broke their terms with him . It is unknown to who was arrogant. May be it hurt OP's ego and he now bitches about it.....all is up in the air . But if they were still together we might have got some more of their beautiful jems. I will always respect OP ji for the jems he has given us regard less to what his behaviour is. Anyway most of the genius are often arrogant. Now even the kids are arrogant 😊

mischief in Asha's voice
Devinder Bir Kaur

Asha Bhonsle
Asha Bhonsle .

Bhanwara bada nadaan hai..., Thodi der ke liye, mere ho jaao..., Sach hue sapne mere, jhoom le o man mere..., Tum jeeyo hazaron saal saal ke din hon pachaas hazar..., Aaiye meharban, teheriye jaan-e-jaan... — the list is endless. What is common among these songs of Asha Bhonsle and those I'm going to mention hereon? Why, it's the zing of a bubbly youngster, that particular quality of mischief in her voice which she has retained over the years. Who can forget the delightful laughter in Jaanu, jaanu re, kahe khanke mora kangna...? And years later when the laughter turned seductive in Yeh hai reshmi zulfon ka andhera, na ghabraiye...?

That was 'chulbuli' Asha Bhonsle at her best. She belted out numbers from the sensuous to the soothing, from the comic to the devotional. But the dominant note in her songs has always been that of seductiveness. Being the younger sister of the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, she idolised "didi", but very wisely developed her own distinct style. She changed her style of singing to suit the breezy, romantic numbers of that period. In fact, the Asha magic constitutes having her fingers on the pulse of the people. She herself says that she has always tried to mould herself according to what is popular. From the very beginning she has willingly sung Westernised numbers. S.D. Burman started the trend. He gave her Haal kaisa hai janab ka..., Achcha ji main haari chalo maan jaao na ..., and years later Raat akeli hai, bujh gaye diye..., Kar le pyar kar le ke din hain yehi..., Reshmi ujala hai, makhmali andhera ... . However, it was O. P. Nayyar who taught Asha how to use the bass in her voice. It is said Hindi film music has had two really great singer-music director combinations: Lata-Madan Mohan and Asha- O. P. Nayyar. Nayyar has himself conceded that Asha sang all his songs with her heart and soul. The list of their songs is endless, and almost all of them became popular. Aaiye meherbaan..., Maang ke saath tumhara maine, maang liya sansaar..., Piya, piya, na laage mora jiya, aaja chori chori..., Jaiye aap kahan jaayenge..., Yeh hai reshmi ..., Bahut shukriya, badi meherbani..., Aankhon se jo utri hai dil mein tasveer hai ik anjaane ki..., Isharon, isharon mein dil lene wale, bata ye hunar tune seekha kahan se..., Hai re hai, ke mere haath mein tera haath rehe din raat, meri jaan balle balle..., Aaj koi pyar se, dil ke baatein keh gaya..., Ik tu hai piya, jispe dil aa gaya..., Aao huzoor tumko, sitaron mein le chaloon..., Kajra mohabbat wala, ankhiyon mein aisa dala... and so on. Asha also sang memorable numbers with Roshan — Nigahen milane ko ji chahta hai..., a qawwali which is her favourite; Jaidev — Abhi na jaao, chhod kar, ke dil abhi bhara nahin; Shankar-Jaikishan — Ang lag ja balma...; Ravi — Chehre pe khushi chha jaati hai, aankhon mein saroor aa jaata hai...; Hemant Kumar — Saakiya aaj mujhe neend nahin aayegi... Madan Mohan — Shokh nazar ki bijliyan, dil pe mere giraye ja..., Jhumka gira re, Bareily ke bazar mein..., Laxmikant- Pyarelal — Dushman-e-jaan, chal diya kahan...., Khat likh de sanwariya ke naam babu..., Koi shehri babu, dil lehri babu, hai re...; and Khayyam — Dil cheez kya hai, aap meri jaan leejiye.... However, after O.P. Nayyar it was R.D. Burman who brought out Asha's full potential and gave her the most memorable numbers. Her hit songs with him included Aaja aaja, main hoon pyar tera ..., O haseena zulfon wali jaane-e-jahan..., O mere Sona re Sona re Sona re, de doongi jaan khafa mat hona re..., Mera naam hai Shabnam, pyar se log mujhe Shabbo kehte hain...., Dum maro dam, mit jaayen gham..., Piya tu ab to aaja..., Duniya mein , logon ko, dhokha kabhi ho jaata hai..., Aao na, gale lagao na, lagi bujhao na, o jaan-e-jaan..., Jaane-e-jaan, dhoondta phir raha , hoon tumhein raat din, main yahan se wahan..., and Yeh ladka, hai Allah kaisa hai deewana..., Mera kuchh samaan... And now with the new crop of music directors Asha is still giving hits: A.R. Rehman — Hoja rangeela..., Tanha, tanha sa jeena, yeh koi baat hai...; Jatin-Lalit — Main chali, bhage bahar... The new rash of Hindi pop singers are no threat to Asha. She was some years ago in London cutting an album with Boy George. Instead of cringing at the remixes that were pouring into the market, she did the next best thing — she joined the bandwagon and brought out the remixed variety of own old numbers. She also came out with a video cassette entitled "Janam Samjha Karo". Then there is the new album "Rahul and I". Asha never ceases to amaze. She is constantly repackaging herself. And so the Asha magic continues to enthral.

I certainly don't agree that Sudha Malhotra or Vani Jayram or Suman Kalyanpur could have scaled the heights that Asha did under the mentorship of OPN. Absolutely not. A common stone cannot become a diamond however much you polish it! Suman K's voice goes off-key frequently at high notes and Sudha Malhotra can at best be called a "poor man's Asha".

Asha got her place only because she deserved it. I would like to repeat that with or without OPN, she would have reigned.

Towards OPN, I would like to deliver a virtual kick for his horrible attitude towards women. Thanks for the interviews which have exposed him to me. He dressed like a gentleman but was far from one.

punjini ji,

Thanks for your opinion. I have no respect toward any one who treat any human big like that. I am also joining with you on that virtual kick. yes you are so right A common stone cannot become a diamond however much you polish it! But you only find out the difference after polishing it!

One more point. After Asha went out of his life, OPN was unable to compose anything worthwhile or deliver any more hits. So I would like to think that it was thanks to Asha that OPN became a hit! 😊

looks like i missed out on some of the fun here😛 thanks for making all these kind folks "fair game"

btw, the two sisters have been suspected of a lot of nasty play themselves. like keeping potential rivals out, destroying other careers. some other arrogant statements they have made- actually lata seems to have her foot in her golden mouth all the time every couple of years or so. and what was the nonsense of her threat to leave mumbai if the construction went ahead? on one hand, she claims the right of a common citizen to speak up, then on the other she brings up a threat which has value only because she knows she is a celebrity. pretty manipulative i'd say. was this the same sort of nonsense they pulled with OPN? at least OPN is open abt his failings, nothing manipulative in what he is saying. he's probably sounding stupid to me, but manipulative? no!

incidentally put one of any 10 grads in a fast-track career and more often than not they'll swim, not sink. they'll learn, they'll grow, they'll hone in on their skills. and why not? the nature of the job itself is giving them that opportunity to grow. in hindsight, it is possible to have started out with someone else, and in time for them to have also developed their skills and become legends... These sisters did not necessarily seem to all and sundry to be God's gift when they first started out...

but in spite of that, the sisters remain my fav singers. so what's the point? simply that even the best of folks make mistakes, even if we can believe the worst written abt them or the worst they themselves have to say... As musicians, all these folks were great and we shld be thankful for that...

Punjini ji...Cannot change your point of view. But singer is always polished by the composer. Yes today Asha ji best...but we are talking about her deput time.

Listen this aong of Chandrani Mukherje 'Mere mehboob shaayad aaj kuchh naaraaz hain mujhse ...' from Kitne Door Kitne Paas (1976...i think)

Listen to Other singers as I mentioned...if they had a mentor like OP ..they would have been success. Yes both sister have tried ruling the industry and were successful

May be OP was hurt after Asha left and lost interest..who knows but my respect to him is still the same. Even these sisters have done nasty things even against each other..but I respect them for what they have given us. Genius like them are respected for wha tthey have given us..their arrogance can not be judged by us.

Punjini ji
Qwest wrote about NAresh...(Rang de Basanti) who recently worked with AR..see his experience.......this shows that a singer is polished by the MD....even in this time..imagine the time of 70's , how much hard work they were doing to retain suceess. Asha was for sure refined by him. Today she is shinning star due to him...no doubt.

Naresh was not exactly a newcomer to music. He had sung in almost 500 stage shows with a theatre group called Rangaat Productions. He had also trained for two years under singers Chintamani Gore and Sushila Mani.

In fact his first stint as a playback singer was in a Tamil movie, Anbe Aaruyire.

And he started on the lilting Roobaroo at 4:30 am, after nearly 12 hours in the recording studio. But by 7 am, the song was complete.

The tune is given to you, and then you rehearse. Only when you start singing, Later, you realise that the [completed] song sounds very different from what you had rehearsed!"

Rahul this is what I am saying too...mostly all the genius have been known for some arrogant behaviour. But they have earned it by giving us so much. OP worked so hard...may be he did not get what he expected and is bitter now...or may be he is like that. I will also not appreciate any one disrespecting women or any one...but I will still respect him what he gave back to us. Who knows what is the reason behind it.

Lata, Asha and OP they all have gained a lot of respect by their hard work and dedication ...👏

If we talk about arrogant MD the foremost name is Sajjad Hussain. He could not put up with anyone in the industry. In a place full of sycophants self esteemed insolence of Sajjad Hussian could not survive. The man who told once to Lata - when she was reportedly struggling with a tune of his - that she should take more effort and that the tune is not of Naushad to take lightly, waged war against many in the industry.

One fine evening in a party, Sajjad walked to Madan Mohan in a not-so-friendly mood. He confronted Madan and asked with rage, "How did you dare steal my tune ?" Sajjad was refering to the new avtaar of his Yeh hawa yeh raat yeh chandani - namely Tujhe kya sunau main dilruba (Aakhari Daao - Rafi) from Madan Mohan.
You can pick up all his songs...cannot dislike any...his fav were Lata, Noor jahan & Talat...but the magic of his compostion with Suraiya..yeh kaissi ajab dastaan ho gayi hai.......just hear aalaap in that....Even he was too arrrogant ans was short lived but his respect in all MDs like Madan Mohan, Anil Biswas..etc has remained very high. Anil calls him the original MD
Basically what I am telling is these genius are arrogant at times....but we cannot forget what we got from them
