Pyaas liye manwa humara ye tarse,
Ek boond teri daya ki jo barse,
Ban jaaye paawan ye jeevan saara,
Jaise ganga ki ho dhara, jaise ganga ki dhara.
Pyaas liye manwa humara ye tarse......

Jaane anjaane karte rahen bhool hum,
Choone aaye hain charnon ki ab dhool hum,
Teri karuna mile - hain bure ya bhale,
Teri bagiya ke phir bhi to hain phool hum.
Pyaas liye manwa humara yeh tarse......

Tumse hai bas humari yahi prathana,
Leke aaye hain hum to yahi kaamna,
Humko vardaan do, aisa tum gyaan do,
Rahe sabke liye prem ki bhavana.
Pyaas liye manwa humara ye tarse......

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

"Companionship -- good or bad -- does it matter?" averred Subhash, the brother. He believed that man creates his own image through his own intrinsic merits. It hardly matters what company he keeps or to which family he belongs.

His sister complained, "You have expressed your views. But have you ever considered my predicament of reconciling your views with that of our father?"

Father Pandit Devdhar Sharma was a reputed lawyer of the town. He was proud of the reputation of his family which he nourished. Hence it was but natural that he should hold traditional views about culture and manners. He did not want his son Subhash to be friendly with Ranga who because of his conduct and business had earned lot of notoriety.

But Subhash was sentimental. He was a poet and a thinker. He wanted to judge what is good or bad by his own experience; he refused to be guided by what others said. Ranga was his friend since school days -- happy go-lucky, careless and free. Ranga offered him his hand of friendship and Subhash grabbed it enthusiastically. Suffocated by his father's insistence on strict discipline and family traditions, he found pleasure only in the company of Ranga.

Torn between the attentions and regard for brother and father was Lakshmi. Her every effort to reconcile them failed. She could not talk to her father, she could not convince her brother. After their mother's death it was Lakshmi who had to look after her brother and save him from all hardship. To save her brother sometimes she had to hide the truth from his own father. And one day, just when newly married Lakshmi was leaving for her husband's home, she was forced to give her necklace which was part of her dowry, to a Pathan to pay off Subhash's debts.

This sactifice on the part of the sister shook Subhash to the core of his heart. He made every effort to secure the necklace. Ultimately he could secure it; but before he could deliver it to his sister, it was stolen from is pocket.

Whenever her husband referred to the necklace Lakshmi got worried. But how long could the hide the truth. When the truth was known Lakshmi was forced to return to her father's home.

What happened then? What did Subhash do to bring back happiness to his beloved sister? See it in this story of a brother and sister's deep love for each other, the story of their hopes and frustrations, their hapiness and suffering. Their story is the story of today, the story of today's living characters reflecting today's society.

Bimal Roy once persuaded Salil da to sing a complex Bengali song Salil Chowdhary obliged and was alarmed to find that young Lata had fainted. She confesses, 'While listening to the song, I was overcome. I couldn't control myself'.

Quoted by Lata:

Aa Ri Aa Nindiya (Do Bigha Zameen,1953; Salil Chowdhary) - "I think this was Salilda's (Salil Chowdhary) first Hindi score. It was very difficult to sing this number. There was no breathing space between the lines. Salilda recorded two versions of the song, one with no orchestra. He wanted to create the feeling of solitude as Meena Kumari sat singing all by herself."

Raaton Ke Saaye Ghane (Annadata , 1972; Salil Chowdhury) - "Salilda was very fond of Western classical music. He would not only buy recordings of symphony music for himself, he also presented them to me. He would then explain the nuances of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, etc. Those were really wonderful days!" (Lata prefers this classic beauty based on a Western symphony over her other raga-based classical numbers from the early 1970s like R.D.Burman's Raina beeti jaaye' and Beeti na beetayi raina.)

Film,"chhaya"(dir:Hrishikesh Mukherjee). the song,"aansoo samajh ke" sung by Talat Mahmood ranks among my most favourite songs of salilda. The song opens with a typical western harmony. the tabla beat is simple. the complexity lies in the tune of the song itself.before that, check the lyrics.Rajinder Kishen came up with some fantastic lines...

aansoo samajh ke kyon mujhe..aankh se tune giraa diyaa..
moti kisee ke pyaar kaa mittee mein kyon milaa diyaa..

jo naa chaman mein khil sakaa,
main woh gareeb phool hoo..
jo kuchh bhi hoon bahaar kee,
chhoti si ek bhool hoon..
jis ne khilaa ke khud mujhe.. khud hee mujhe bhulaa diyaa..

aansoo samajh ke kyon mujhe..

nagma hoon kab magar mujhe..
apne pe koii naaz thaa..
gaayaa gayaa hoon jis pe main..
Toota hua woh saaz thaa..
jis ne sunaa woh hans diyaa, hans ke mujhe rulaa diyaa..

aansoo samajh ke kyon mujhe..

meri khataa maaf hai,
bhoole se aa gayaa yahaan..
warna mujhe bhi hain khabar,
meraa nahii hain yeh jahaan..
doob chalaa thaa neend mein, achchhaa kiyaa jagaa diyaa..

aansoo samajh ke kyon mujhe.....aankh se tune giraa diyaa..
moti kisee ke pyaar kaa mittee mein kyon milaa diyaa..
