It is never too late to start up a musical instrument. I teach tabla and khol on the weekends, and I have my oldest student being 30 and my youngest being 20. IF you really have the time and effort to learn it, you will be able to do it. You just need the discipline to learn the instrument, and the patience that at first, you won't sound like Brian Silas (a famous piano player in India) or L. Subramaniam (famous South Indian violin player). Give it time, because music is a sadhana. You don't expect results right away.

As it isn't impossible, it does become difficult to imbibe new knowledge later on. Hence music (being a trinity of art, science, and application) becomes overwhelming. As a new teacher, it does become frustrating when someone wants to learn from you only how to play "this song" or "that song." Somtimes, the raga of that song and the raga of this song are the same and I end up teaching the same concept twice. So it also depends on what you want to do.

My small two cents here.

Gonna answer two questions in one reply:

For Abhi:

Yes you can! 👏

For Teen India USA:

From teaching tabla, there are two big "turn-offs" to tabla. The first drawback is that people cannot produce bols correctly, or they feel upset when they can't produce crisp sounds. The second chapter in my tabla course is dayan bols. Tun is relatively easy, as it is an open bol. (Some can't do that... make an open sound resonanting freely). The third course is when people pack up, when the baya bols. When I teach ga, I try to introduce the four methods of pitch fluctuation in the bass (pressure, sliding toward syahi, roll wrist around the syahi, jump to syahi). It becomes too difficult for them to grasp it and they quit.

Having said that, I have been blessed by God's mercy upon me that I have few great tabla students who succeeded that 1st phase and are now learning seven matra rupak tala. For Western students, it's a bit difficult to count seven, but I made a small tape of some recordings that were in seven beats, so they can make can relate to it.

Teachers out there, be able to relate to your students and their backgrounds!

Bhakta ji,
If there is no guru around and one has a strong desire to become a singer...What one should do...What would suggest... What kind of songs to practice so that indirectly learn main ragas...may be if you can give examples of some of popular raga based songs...
