In fact the better of the two singers in the last season bo bice ended up second but is more successful than Carrier underwood who won the competition!!!

in that case, i'd say judging has failed miserably. sgmp has been on for what? 10 yrs? 520 episodes. produced just a handful of folks we listen to now. y? perhaps because it did not come with involvement on the part of common folks. in any case, like anything else, a lot of people have talent, but only a few make it.

I dont totally agree that its because of hte fact that we didn't vote for them. Its got a lot to do with the show and the chances it gives. I think the show should take responsibility and give singers oppurtunities. Music Directors should learn to risk with new singers. Not many directors have done this, very very few and those who have struck the gold pot. A R Rahman with Naresh Iyer in RDB, Kunal Ganjawala in Saathiya, Ismail Durbar in Devdas with Shreya Goshal made teh difference. I think though SRGMP has produced a few, they were gems, true gems.

Just the fact taht we are talking about them now even 10 years later validates my point.

Back to the argument about visual or vocal, I think it should be a good mix of both now. Sonu Nigam is a great singer not only because of his voice but because of his performance. Lataji, Ashaji are of a totally different era and Ashaji too is a great performer in her own league. If you have seen her concerts u'd understand. She is great undoubtedly !!

Todays singers face a LOT more competition than the singers of tat era. That time it was almostlike a fixed thing that for a certain song/actor a certain singer was required. Today its not like that... If shaan can sing for saif ali khan and make it look natural sonu does a good job of it too. Why? Because of their versatality.. its needed now. Look at the male singers we have today Sonu Nigam, Shaan, KK, Kunal Ganjawala add to the list of Abhijeet, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu and then part time singers like A R Rahman and HR who give consistent hits, how hard this competition must be! Hence comes the visual factor.. if the singer looks presentable, he can sell himself with albums atleast if not playback singing.

Visual appeal is there everywhere. Beauty is skin deep is a famous quote but often its not followed. Most guy friend of mine find Mallika Sherawat hot but they know tat Rani Mukherjee is a better actress. What I am trying to say is visual factor sells.

SRGMP was at fault there. In the beginning they stressed on the vocal quality by getting external judges and then suddenly it wasabout performance, getting actors to judge etc etc. Else why would they insist Hema to shave off his moustache ?! Looks sell, its the harsh truth of life and we should just deal with it..

SRGMP is a brilliant show and I think it is still continuin there, unfortunately its moving towards a new generation of music which is going to take some time for unviersal acceptance.

"I agree things have changed...courtesy Gulshan kumar who changed the way we like music. He hammered us with those remakes of old songs and made instant heros of Sonu, Shanu, Anuradha,.... So yes if you are hammered with a song continuously you may end up liking it.. but we being indians go one step beyond the perception of our senses and feel the song, we can sense honesty, emotion in the voice which is where we take that additional step after being enamoured by the package (cheaply sold CD's) we still assess the content..which is why we still go and buy a original Lata over the newer cheap imitations!!

To answer your question, I wont date anyone physically unattractive but then thinking conversely if the person I liked becomes unattractive later on for some reason - I am more than likely to dump the one who was merely physically attractive over the one whose inner beauty I already sensed...As indians unlike the westerners we still sense the difference in value bet' package and the content!!"

- yaar, i'd really like to believe all this about all of us, including u and me. but the fact that HR-type music is doing so much better than the "senses and feel" type of songs u've grandly pointed to shows where we are at today. The packaging, the hype, the marketing all sell. In fact, most movies these days which dont come with a huge mkting budet are non-starters.

And the qn was on dating, not on who u picked as a steady partner. If u ask me, toh date karo, date karo. aur badalte jao after u find out abt the lack of inner beauty 😉

I totally agree with that statement... I was so upset to find out that HR won the filmfare when Sonu's dheere jalna was a 1000 times better...

For that SRGMP - has produced - shreya, kunal, abhijeet, Sunidhi...and more all of who have been successful. percentagewise this may be really huge
But this is the first time they have resorted to public voting!!!

yaar, over the last 10 years, u've probably got 5 or 10 singers from sgmp who r remotely successful today. take 10. 10/500 episodes is a lousy number. from the current format, even if only 3 or 4 go on to do well, that'll be a bigger number %age-wise for a show that just ran 8 months.

to go back to the public speaking example, successful speeches often have an element of audience involvement. new sgmp with public voting created that mass involvement. This is what will make these 12 or so finalists that much more memorable.

Ekdam jhakas thread. Mazaa Aa gaya.

I think public should not be abolished. It has made feel public more connected with participants, which is a huge boost to contestants' careers. They want to listen to their fav contestants. Sure, public voting should be fine-tuned as Punjini ji's other thread discussed, like only one vote per mobile no, no internet voting (unless it is secure) etc.

SRGMP also needs to maintain its "Pehchaan", and not try to ape something else. It has to decide whether it is looking for singers or performers.
