Give me any example of OPN where Rafi could outplay asha.. its not about the song but how much the MD is making it for the singer.. for OPN asha was the life line and for MM it was Lata.. nobody could outplay them IMHO..

The caliber of Rafi and Lata are at par all others come below them.Rafi has out played Aasha in each and evry comparable number. (Aaja Aaja from Teesri Manzil or Udhe jab jab zulfen teri ( Naya Daur)

The success of most OPN films depended up on his extra ordinary musical work. Most of his films had ordinary story line and ordinary heros. Other than Dilip Kumar(Naya Daur) and Shammi Kapoor. No one really cared for Joy Mukharji, Biswajeet as actors for whom OPN scored his music .His music was the main box office puller and these two heros survived solely on the success of the music of OPN.Therefore needless to say that Aasha did not playback for iether of them. It was Rafi all the way. OPN and Rafi have given more hits than OPN and Aasha. It is when OPN turned to Mahendra Kapoor that his musical magic was lost and went in to retirement

Hi,

I am not trying to convince you who is better and who is not. I fully respect your point of view.

When I said Lata 's voice not sweeter now a days, it is bcos of her age. Listen to any of her songs in last 5 years and you will notice that it is way different than when she was at her peak.

Listen to songs of Mujhse dosti Karoge (well, I do not like any of those songs) ,.. but Udit sounds much fresh than Lata. Even her song in Page 3 is an example of age catching on her. Please not that I am a huge fan of Lata. It is just my observation that now a days Alka and Kavita can do more justice than her to any given song just bcos thier voice is much fresh. (Please note that it is just my view)

When you talked about few songs of Ram pur ka laxamn and yadon ki barat, i know Rafi was there. Rafi sang for Shatru sinha. But note that in both movies, music was given by RD (hardcore Kishre fan)

Now you said earlier Roop tera mastana was meant for kishore and O dunia ke rakhwale was meant for Rafi. I fully agree. But my point is if Rafi would have sung roop tera mastana, he would have done atleast 70 % of justice to that song compared to 100 % justice by kishore da. However if kishore would have sung some of Rafi's songs like O duniya ke rakhwale or kar chale hum fida jan o tan or mahoabat zinda rahti hai .. etc, i am not sure whether he would have even done 20% of justice.

point is Rafi's songs where he had mastery were much harder (difficult) to kishore da's fast paced songs. non singer (bathroom) like me have tried singing songs of both of them and while singing many reafi's songs , my breadth was catching up on me.

Again, at high pitch many singers including kishor da were loud where as Rafi's voice was never loud.

Again I am not taking any credit away from kishore. He was gr8 in his own terms.

you also talked about comparing Rafi with asha. I think it is more of personal choice. But when i here Diwana hua badal or Rimghim ke tarane leke aayi barsaat, I find rafi's voice more soothing than asha though she tried some variation in her voice.

Again.please do not take it personally. To me Rafi and Lata are best singers we have got so far in male and female category in bollywood.

Aaja tujhko pukare mere geet

Infact it was upto the MD to decide who the song is focussed on... In every OPN song Asha outplayed Rafi.. in a duet.

Rafi's songs in bin maa ke bacche, laila majnu, were pathetic.. somebody said he was 54 then.. Lata sang Dil to pagal hai - she was around 70..

Now this discussion is getting too much of personal preferences and just to prove my point for KK and Lata I dont want to recount bad songs of rafi... since I like all 3 of them...each of them had their moments..I found them equally good...unless I am comparing apples to oranges...Rafi couldnt do "Roop tera mastana" and kk couldnt do a "o duniya ke rakhwale...!!!!

I am comparing Lata and Rafi only where they have both sung the same songs, so it's not really comparing apples and oranges. When Rafi sings "ehsaan tera hoga mujh par", the way he says "muhabbat" is so full of passion. Lata says "muhabbat" in a straighforward way. We are not talking about technical prowess here. Both were technically at par, equally gifted. In almost every song sung by both Rafi and Lata, it seems to me as if Lata is singing exactly as the MD asked her to, while Rafi is singing for his love, going through the emotions.

Of course, these are my personal/individual preferences. I am not representing some community! But I know there are many who have the same views. So let's agree to disagree.

To me Lata and Rafi are ultimate in play back singing. No body will ever achieve that place. When Rafi left for heavens(To me he is still alive)his voice was immaculate as he was in his late 50's and that is not the age were voice quality is affected.Lata is around 70 now. for the past 5/8 years her voice has deteriorated to such an extent that I prefer not to listen to her new songs. In Veerzara, Rathode who is just another singer is far better than her.Listen to 'Tere Liye Hum hain Jiye' I love to listen to her number 'Ruk ja raat teher jare chanda' at least once a week.

few songs where KK outplayed rafi

In Yadon ki baarat listen When Rafi comes with 'Badlena apna yeh aalam kabhi'melody comes back to the otherwise flat rendering by KK. Got to remember Rafi won the National award for the same film for 'Kya hua tera wada'

Offcourse Rafi could have sung 'Roop tera mastana' and even bettered it. He had done it at least 10 years before Aaradhana in Love in Tokyo Listen to 'Aaja re Aa zara' from Love in Tokyo. The hero and heroin are drenched in pouring rain and are dangerously close to each other. The hero is shivering due to the cold rain as well as hot heroin. The feeling depicted in the song of both the cold due to the rain and sensuaity due to the closeness to the heroin goes unmatched todate.

Yes, I agree abt yadoon ki barat song. The only diference could be that kishore got more lines to sing than rafi .. thanks to RD.

It's not the same film. "Kya hua tera vada" is from Hum kisi se kum nahin.

Lets us discuss more here as there are some real music fans here. It is worth exchanging ideas rather than talking about stupid HR and AS .

I love both Rafi and Lata equaly. I want to know how they compare in the song 'Woh jab yaad aaye bahut yaad aaye' from Laxmi/Pyare first movie What a song what a debut for LP (I absolutely adore them)

The only fact I disliked about Lata and Aasha is that during their peak days they never let any other female singer succeed in Bollywood. Suman Kalyanpur, Krishna kalley, Mubarak begum, Sharada. and a few others were nipped in the bud.
