More people in this world have heard of Britney Spears than R.D.Burman. She is a legend and he is not. Besides, he has only made his mark in a regional language like Hindi, whereas Britney has done it in the universal language - English.

Is that a good example??

Here is the example I gave in my previous post

Sinha,
In which industry they call them legend by performaing in 1/10 of original numbers ?

Cricket = Surinder Amarnath (elder brother of Jimmy, excellent performance, is he a lgend ?), but Gavsakar is

Movies = Ramesh Sippy ( 4-5 movies , oen top hit, is he a legend ?, but Yash Chopra is

Music - Shiv-Hari (8 movies most of them were hoits, is he a legend ? but Shamkar Jaikishan is

Athletics = Anju Bobby George ( 1 olympics, couple of medels in international meet)

Tennis = Sania Mirza ( beat top guys couple of times)

Man , you guys are biased, be practical and come to reality.
I have enough respect for ARR. I do like his compostions. But no way a legend

because thats the national language. I think you are putting regionalism here, by not accepting the facts

In this forum we talk about something on national channel, national musicians/actors and ARR is not tested extensively in national level. That does not mean he is no good. I never said that too, but he is no way a legend. He is way to go to

Point well taken, snilejg!

Mr.Sinha had started the thread as "ARR a Legend in the making" If ARR keeps up the trend he has established so far, he surely will succeed becoming one.

Thanks. Thats my whole point. Let us wait and see. He did make some good compositions, but unless you are totally tested with manistream market, how can you call him legend ?

Some of the guys are not ready for a healthy discussion and not wiling to listen to my points and started unnecessory topics e.g. regionalism, Beethoven/Mozart,Iiliyaraja etc.

😊
Have some healthy conversation buddy. There could be some arguments, but that does not mean you cannot go away from the topic.
Just now I had a heated argument with one of my collegues here. The topic was PM intervening Airport strike versus Bloomberg intervening mta strike. Both are same , couldn't punish culprits
Anyway going off the topic 😛

Another off the topic please
If you guys are musicians, play instruments in professinal level, then PM me, I want to bring one of the eliminated contestnat here in US, but she doesn't have tracks and I can't afford top instrumentalist, so was thinking some cheaper guys ...

Thanks for looking out, ab_srgmp 😉

I just wonder why even people outside of India consider ARR a legend when some of his own countrymen don't. Wierd, isn't it. I can't think of any other Indian film composer who has attained that level of popularity in the entire world as ARR. His legend comes not only from composing music for film soundtracks, but other kinds of music as well.

Snilejg, seeing your preference for the hindi language (ofcourse I'm proud of the national language as well but I've always believed fine arts and music never have any frontiers), I would like your take on Satyajit Ray ??

How do rate Satyajit Ray ?? A legend or just an ordinary filmmaker (after all only a couple of hindi movies) ??

😉 😉 😉

Ray was an international figuire from his very first movie. Not only in outside Bengal, but his movies were very famous outside India too.
ARR first and only international project was super flop in NY, moderate in London.

Sorry to disagree.

Bombay Dreams wasn't marketed properly in NY. I went to Times Square (New York) 3 times and came back because tickets were sold out. My American friends saw Bombay Dreams and they just loved it. Americans need to learn more about our culture, then they'll start appreciating "Bombay Dreams" better. They recovered more than what they spent on "Bombay Dreams", how would you call it a flop?. It was a hit in London. Please get your facts right.

1) ARR is a great composer, even if you don't accept it.

2) Illayaraja is a legend. Listen to "Nothing But Wind", "How to Name it" instrumental pieces by Illayaraja. No language barrier her. You'll know what you mean by real music.

We do appreciate different opinions, please base it on facts, not your whims and fancies.

Honestly, I feel Sinhaji's posts have taught me more about music composers better than anything else I have read in my life about music. I don't think most of us care for your opinion anymore because we have great admiration for Sinhaji and his effort in giving us such wonderful posts.
