CLASSICAL MUSIC:THE FORMAL TRAINING
We all r aware of the fact that for every job we require some initial training, otherwise we cannot get the maximum output, efficiency & effectiveness.
Practice makes a man perfect, that's a common saying, but now everyone wants to get a short-cut method.Short-cut may take us to our destination sometimes but we cannot sit in the velvet couch for too long.
Listening to music & singing r two different things. All persons who have the knowledge of music cannot sing, all singers cannot make music.Sometimes, some persons even having the knowledge and sur gyan cannot potray it by singing. What we think cannot be produced to the same extent. Some persons can play instruments very well but they r unable to sing it perfectly in the same manner & vice-versa also happens.
God has given everyone some talent or the other but the degree varies. Some r more talented & some r less, but with hardwork we can improve.Music is all about the SAATH SUR .
Every instrument is set-up and brought 2 perfect sur before playing it.Likewise each sur.i.e.Sa,Re,Ga,Ma,Pa,Dha,Ni,Sa, have 2 be properly practiced before singing a song.If we r perfect in that we can sing or play almost any kind of song.
As Bhaktaji has told earlier that Ragas r made of these. They have a variety of combinations and if we learn even 50 of them, and r able to do atleast their Sargams,we can try and sing almost any song.
Our gr8 gurus have made the ragas and also talas suiting them.Tala is another important aspect and proper training of it can be achieved only by knowing at least something about Tabla.
A singer should know how each type of instrument works and should be able to relate to it properly.
Classical training imparts us a foundation for music. If fundamentals r strong,we can use our skill, knowledge and imagination to maximum level.
I'll site u examples.
Just see Sanchali, she didn't have the proper training,so she was out eventually. She was besura at times, the same thing happened with Rajeev,he had gr8 potential, but he was not good in low notes, his voice shaked and he seemed uncomfortable while singing.Same with Vinit too,he didn't have enough riyaz,so he didn't have straigt low notes.Again,he is unaware of some simple techniques. We don't have 2 always shout with all our breath when we go for higher notes, sometimes,we have 2 do soft mirkis and we can just move like sliding slowly towards the higher note,Hariharan does it often.
just see Nihira & Hemu, they r comfortable in all types of notes, may be they r shuddha low notes, very high ones, tivra ones,or komal ones, even they r comfortable singing komal & shudha, high & low alternatively. As per Himani, she's improved a lot.She is trained but she has not regular practice but after coming to Challenge she did work hard.
Breathing in between and how 2 control breathing and where 2 take small breaths and where 2 take large ones is another imp thing. When we have atleast 2hrs of riyaz everyday,we can make it the best.
Remember,Qazi had 2 take breathing exercises to improve his singing, still he's not better than anyone in u compare.
Concentration is also very necessary, music is like meditation, the feelings come if u totally concentrate.Nihira was praying no,that somewhat increases the concentration.
U can sing a song but if u r classically trained,u'll not take much time 2 learn a new song,u would grasp it automatically, otherwise it takes a lot of time learning that particular song only.In school,i used 2 playback for almost all songs in the functions, there,i used to take just 15 min to learn a song and then i sang it.Even,i was able to teach others.😊
I don't say that classical training is a must for singing, but it is helpful for making a stable career as a singer.
