I read this interview only NOW when Soulsoup informed me about the compiling of musical threads. What an eyeopener about the life and times of India's greatest male playback singer. I used to think that Rafi's wife must be the most blessed woman in the world, who would wake up to Rafi whispering "Ai husn zara jaag tujhe ishq jagaaye" into her ears or "Abhi na jaao chod kar", when she went to do the household chores! But the poor lady says she had been brought up not to like music and that she never discussed music with him!

To think that Rafi infused his voice with all that romance, yearning, longing despite leading such an ordinary, routine life!

Yep, Rafi was almost as good as "Binita Singhania" (yes, thats actually a singer and there were no personal slurs here so hopefully I wont be banned) 😆...

Now (specially for Punjini ji), Mahendra Kapoor was so much better... 😛😆

I would have understood if Mahendra Kapoor's wife had said that she didn't like music and never listened to his songs. 😊

thanks raghav, for the wonderful article.rafi saab used to wake up at 3 am to do riyaz!!!!
I am such a great fan of his.....my dad loved rafi so much(he was unjustly critical of Kishore kumar-I realised kks genious only much later.)i have a 15 year old daughter(that old!) so you will understand why as a young girl I used to tell my mom that I wanted to marry rafi.I used to ask her what he looked like,my mom would say"he has big eyes and a beautiful smile!!!later when I saw his picture I was shocked to see that he was so old....I dreamt that he looked like shashi kapoor, when i listened to his songs on the radio!but anyway I still adored him!
at parties my dad used to sing a rafi gem"aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai,aaj to tere bina neend nahin aayegi" for my mom!
has any one heard this song.it is from the movie "nayi umar ki nayi fasal"
