@Ajnu, the suggestions of Mister K and RTH, regarding your desktop, are already good. I would like to add that when you will make a backup then it is possible that virus will come along in that backup. After that if you will use it in your laptop then your laptop might catch the virus as well. So take care while using files from the backup disk.

Another point is that you may try using linux. Nothing is 100% secure, but I dont think your linux desktop will catch a virus.

In general don't download programs, attachments etc from untrusted websites and emails.

@RTH your computer crashes how many times in a year? 😛

to add to what karan suggest WA n RTH guys do virus scans n spyware scans
with latest updated definations
what anti-virus n anti-spyware software u both have?
once scans have completed the viruses n spyware will be removed
then make ur backups otherwise as karan said the virus will still be on backup if u dnt scan n remove first
a second point Linux isnt too easy to use for newbies i found it impossible but am getting used to it know
lthough i haven't used it in a year so im rusty probably forgotten most
my suggestion for ppl used to windows that want to use linux
use Ubuntu Linux it is most windows like n there fore user friendly
other linux distros u have to do alot before installing stuff
oh n if u dnt want to install linux on ur laptop before ur sure u can always get live cds of linux distros the linx os boots from cd no need for installation
