A rectangular block, with dimesions 4 cm, 5 cm, and 6 cm, is made up of cubes each with side length 1 cm. If 1 cm^3 (cubed) cubes are removed from this larger rectangular block, what is the minimum number of these cubes that must be removed so that the resulting solid is itself a cube?

The answer is 56.

Area of the given rectangle = 4x5x6 = 120.
The largest cube less than 120 has the area 64.
Hence, 56 cubes of 1x1x1 dimension need to be removed to achieve 64.

Pam, I was just searching the internet for your brain question:
One website says brain stops growing at age 15 another one claims it stops growing at age 18. And a third one claims it grows even after death!
If you have tried 18 before then try 15yrs or wait for Maddy the doc. The doc. in my house is off to work so can't ask.

Here is the Time magazine article:

Research to be published November in the journal Nature Medicine suggests that at least one area of the adult brain can reproduce and generate new cells, even after death. That is, of course, utterly contrary to everything we thought about the brain up until now. It was assumed that at some point in your grown-up life, brain cells stopped generating and started dying off. Not true -– at least not in the hippocampus, according to a team of American and Swedish scientists who took samples of this portion of the brain from cancer patient autopsies.
