Well I am sure that many of us already know about FireFox FREE Internet Browser available on Internet.
Well I am sure the first question that would be popping up on everyoe's mind is that what it has to do with India Forums and why we are promoting Firefox on a discussion forums 😊. Well there are several reasons for this:
- To keep our members updated with computer and internet stuff to make their Internet surfing more enjoyable and secured.
- FireFox is an excellent product and I like it. (Unbiased opinion) and moreover users on FireFox has comparatively less Cookie Corruption compared to Internet Explorer which most of our members were facing.🤢😕
- India Forums gets few cents per download (only on systems which do not have FireFox) through any of the Firefox banner on India Forums. If you DO NOT want Google Toolbar along with Firefox then you can even download it directly from FireFox website directly.
- Even though I am well informed IT lad who loves to keep his computer system updated with latest Security Patch and Anti-Virus and Firewall software but still Internet Explorer crashed on me lately 😡 and got me some new variants of Viruses & Spywares which were not protected by McAfee VirusScan 😭. Pretty surprising isnt it ? Me too
- If you are not using Windows XP, Microsoft has abandoned you
The folks at Redmond have announced that the security enhancements to Internet Explorer offered in Windows XP SP2 will not necessarily be made available for any Windows operating system prior to XP. The intent is evident; they want everyone to upgrade to Windows XP or the upcoming Vista. The Microsoft announcement will inevitably embolden hackers to target future attacks on IE to versions on non-XP PCs. So if you don't use Windows XP, this alone is sufficient reason to look for an alternative to Internet Explorer.
Was I able to get your attention so far then do read this and I am sure after reading this you will feel more knowledgeable among your friends when it comes to recommending Browser 😆 (no kidding)
Now lets read some of the Pros and Cons of FireFox:
Pros
- Automatic Update
This feature makes it easy to get the latest security and feature updates to Firefox. Firefox automatically downloads these small updates in the background and prompts you when they are ready to be installed. So as soon as there is an update you are notified. - Faster Browsing
Well I am sure the question would be how can it provide Faster Browsing compared to Internet Explorer. The main reason for this is that FireFox starts drawing the page on the browsing as an when it gets data. You might not understand the difference much when you are browsing through a small page.
But lets say you are on a dialup connection or a viewing a table based large size webpage then Intenet Explorer needs to download the whole page to display you whereas Firefox starts displaying the page with as much data it has retrieved from the server. So you start reading the page as it downloads instead of waiting for the whole page to download first. - Tabbed Browsing
Being an active surfer and I use Intenet mostly for searching and browsing different sites at the same time my Taskbar is so cluttered with so many instance of Internet Explorer opened that it gets cumbersome to move from one window to other.
Whereas in Firefox you can use Tabbed browsing to open multiple Web pages in a single browser window, and quickly flip back and forth. Drag and drop open tabs to keep related pages together. - Integreted Search
Tap into the power of the Web's most popular search engines (including Google, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista and more...) with the built-in Search Bar, and easily add new engines. - Customize feature
Select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.
Cons
- Some web sites won't work properly with Firefox
A number of web sites utilize non-standard, proprietary Microsoft features such as ActiveX in order to provide site navigation and other features. It's probably not a good web design practice but that doesn't stop people doing it. - Firefox loads slower than Internet Explorer
Firefox may load web pages much faster than IE but the program itself takes longer to load. Much longer, maybe twice as long. That's because major component of Internet Explorer are always running on your PC, they are pre-loaded. That means IE has less work to do when it starts. - Firefox is not a Microsoft Product.
Let's face it; some folks just feel happier using Microsoft products. Others just don't like using products that look and feel any differently to the ones they are familiar with. Additionally some companies have an all Microsoft policy. If you fall into any of these categories then Firefox may not be for you.
- Your Internet Explorer Add-ins Won't Work
If you've loaded up your copy of Internet Explorer with lots of additional toolbars, special buttons and other add-ins the sad news is that most of them won't work with Firefox. Some will but only if the vendors offers a special version for Mozilla Firefox.
Luckily the most commonly used Internet Explorer Add-ins: the Google Toolbar, The Yahoo Toolbar and RoboForm are all available for Firefox. You can also integrate GetRight and most other download managers by using a one of the many free Firefox extensions.
Conclusion
The decision to move from Internet Explorer to Firefox is a decision involving trading one set of attributes for another. Each individual will need to weigh the pros and cons and make a decision based on their own needs.
If you are not using Windows XP then I feel the situation is clear cut. Microsoft has announced that they will not upgrade your Internet Explorer to the latest XP SP2 standard or beyond. Given that, you should move to another browser just on security grounds alone. And if you are going to go to another browser, then the current browser of choice is Firefox ver 1.5
Windows XP users on the face of it, have a real alternative to Firefox. They can stay with IE by installing XP Service Pack 2 along with its IE security enhancements and then hang-in pending the release IE7.
