Today's snakes and ladders game signified way more than the entire episode did and I wanted to touch on it.
Snakes and ladders. An ancient game that has its roots in morality lessons, teaching a player that sometimes life takes them forward by virtues (ladders) and sometimes sets them back by vices (snakes). It represents life and its complicated journey. It is dependent some on strategy and some on sheer luck.
In a way this one game explained the show and the characters.
Sudha (blue) was proud of her move forward. She was near the end. She was not to be beaten by any snakes. And yet, even when she landed on a snake, she made it as if she was playing a pawn (Anami) that had been bitten by her (snake) and lost. While this may be true, it also represents how close Sudha will get to the end and yet lose. She will see the end in sight. She will see her goal in sight. She will be able to reach out and touch it. And yet she will fail. She will be thwarted at the last second and lose.
On the other hand, Narottam (red) was stuck in the middle at 46. He could move forward 3 steps and make his way to the top past the longest snake or he could move forward 5 steps and fall back again. This was significant because while Sudha kept moving forward without care of what came in her path, Narottam is frozen in a warp. He's stuck and unsure of where to move next. He can take the 5 steps and join his mother or he can take the 3 steps and rise above everything. But since he himself isn't sure what to do, his piece is unsure what to do as well.
This game also in a way emulated the relationship between Satrupa and Anami. Satrupa is the blue piece. She feels she's moving ahead, but then several things hit her at once and she falls farther than she had reached. She's at a crossroads and in a dilemma. On one hand, Anami hates her and won't do anything that she says even if it's for Anami's good, and on the other hand, her family hates her and Anami and refuses to accept Anami. She needs some good strategies to move ahead, even if it means using Anami's adoptive family as a threat. Anami is the red piece, stuck in the middle of this complicated family. On one side, Narottam and Sudha are trying to use her and bring her down, and on the other hand, Satrupa and Gayatri are trying to do something for the betterment of Anami. But she's stuck because she could listen to Narottam and Sudha and fall far or she can follow Satrupa and Gayatri and rise like a phoenix.
What's even more significant about this one game is that everyone can be categorized into either snake or ladder for each character and each will be different. What could be a snake for Anami, may be a ladder for Satrupa, such as Pagli Pandityan, Ladoo, and Shraddh Pandit.
Whatever may be the case, it'll be interesting to see how Sudha gets ahead of herself, feels she's about to win, and will then lose.
