Honestly the show's promo itself was a big draw and the show more than lives up to its promise.

The serenity of Varanasi...the riotous colours, the splendid cinematography.

The characters, especially the strong women characters- Satrupa and Anami. Also a horde of talented actors including Narayani, Mahima, Praneet Bhatt, Lubna Salim, Anju Mahendroo etc,. I think Sangeeta Ghosh is also a part of the show right? This is an amazing ensemble.

More importantly the premise...what happens in the conflict between two strong women, a mother and a daughter, who share a tempestuous relationship and are at loggerheads? The pain of abandonment that the daughter feels, discriminated against on account of her gender. Also the hint of intrigue and power play in the fight for power and control amongst the members of the royal family.

Also loved the emotional scenes with Anami and the Pagli Panditayin, as she lovingly calls her foster mom, and how she rues why the latter couldn't have been her biological mother...and her playfulness with Ladoo her baby brother.

Splendid start. Waiting for more! ⭐️

@YeHoKyaRahaHai - Very well described
I'm also interested to see how the dynamic between mother and daughter plays out. Most of the first episode was setup ofcourse - hints of inheritance issues and simmering family rivalry, comparison between where Anami has grown up and the family she belongs to by blood, Anami's angst as described in her own words...

...but I think the scene I found moving was when Anaami was letting out her frustrations on the rooftop by beating the carpet and "pagli panditaayan" remorsefully coming up from behind her to hug her and console her because she knows the words she uttered were the worst possible ones she could have chosen, especially just a day before Anaami's birthday.

Is Vatsalya going to last long I wonder? I have no idea of the upcoming story as I don't follow spoilers but wondering if the reason Anaami ends up in the family is Vatsalya's death and his distraught mother being told by her help that actually the child she gave birth to is growing up on the ghats of Varanasi. Or I could be totally off with my guess and we're supposed to see Vastalya-Anaami dynamics maybe. But something tells me it'd be more interesting to have a daughter angry with the mother who abandoned her and a mother who can't help but compare her "real" daughter with a (now dead) son she kept on a pedestal...?

Anyhow, let's see how it goes...

Lovely comment. As far as I can remember from the promos...it doesn't seem like Vatsalya will survive. Maybe Anami is brought in to fulfill her destiny, as her foster dad predicts. And just like Satrupa might come to compare her ideal son with a sullen, rebellious daughter...I'm also interested to see how Satrupa reacts to the loving relationship between Anami and the Pagli Panditayin...I found both the nickname scene and the blanket-beating scene very endearing.

It's also befitting that Vatsalya is named so...it means motherly love, right? So he is the recipient and the living embodiment of someone nourished by motherly love. I do wish he survives because it would be interesting to see how the twins react to one another.

Also Tom Alter is there...forgot to mention in my main post. Happy to see him after a long time.

Yes I also didn't notice Vatsalya in the promos. Perhaps in terms of sibling dynamics we'd see something in regards to Anaami and that other kid in the party who was kind of ignored?

Interesting point about Satrupa's feelings towards Anaami's relationship with her foster parents... I was kind of wondering how that would play out too. I hope we do get to see them and Anaami's more carefree avatar with her foster brother as well but seems logistically implausible if she'll shift from Varanasi to the family estate.

Been wondering what Vatsalya means! You finally made me look it up and yeah very aptly chosen name as he did receive all of Satrupa's motherly love. Actually, reading your post I just realised Anaami and Vatsalya were twins. I must've missed that somehow in the ep and was still puzzling over whose boy Satrupa was raising unawares lol 😆. Well, now I'm a tad bit confused why Anaami had to be given away at all though...

p.s. yeah I thought I recognised the guy! Tom Alter it is indeed...

Haha..even i was confused by some of the goings on...was feeling groggy after lunch. Watched a repeat telecast and boy, did the show make me sit up! Quite engrossing.

And yes, the other kid, a little boy wearing a skirt(?) ...who was hushed away and was looking intently at his dad. Another intriguing aspect.

Based on the promos and what the maid said in the first episode it seems like Satrupa doesn't even know that she had twins. I think she just thought she had one. Or maybe she does know.

Whatever it is, Anami is a girl and it seems that if she had lived then she might have been the older child and thus the waaris, which obviously can't be because she's a girl. So if she had stayed in the house, she would have been killed or shunned or something along those lines so that the boy could be the waaris. Now either Satrupa gave Anami away or the maid decided herself to give Anami away in a bid to save her life.

I do think Satrupa gave her away willingly- Narayani in an interview acknowledged that Anami's angst against her mother was justified...also the writer of the show compared Anaami to Karna and said that she is a female Karna.

So the dynamic between the two of them will be like Karna and Kunti from the Mahabharat I guess.

So looks like that kid was Narottam - I really hope they handle his characterisation well and he gets a significant character graph of his own...
