"Excuse me, this is our daily program schedule meeting in case you have forgotten."
"Oh so sorry I tend to assume that people around me are intelligent Malvika. I thought at least men were if not us." It was Ananya again snide and vindictive as always. Kabir enjoyed the way she used to give it back left and right to not only Malvika but also Manav. He though had understood what she was saying very well. He was not Kabir Sharma for nothing
"Can men handle woman with better Intelligence without feeling insecure. Ofcourse we would need a better punchline to this effect. Malvika this would be the subject of your "Women and Society" segment this week on Friday at 6:00. I think this is precisely what Ms Kashyap was saying"
"Oh shit" every one's heads were turned towards baby.
"Where?" Ananya could shift on the scales of social etiquette either ways depending on her mood and right she appeared to be miffed up.
"You know Ananya being snide and gross may appear cool to you, but every one in a civilized society does not relate to such things."
"You mean to say the civilized society has some absolutely mutant gene, they don't shit?" Ananya glared into the older woman's face daring her to say some thing, any thing may be.
"Ok Miss Kashyap you will be working on the medical college admission scam. We will be continuing with this story today at nine. Richa you will be covering the interview of the minister for human resources development. I have gone through the brief and all seems fine. Be certain to ask her stance on the autonomy of The Vidarbha University. Manav will be covering the controversial movie 1947 The Dividing line. I guess we are mostly set any questions?" Kabir delivered his soliloquy before the shit became too messy for him to handle. Nobody spoke when he was speaking and when he was silent democracy played havoc in the meetings of KKN.
"Sir so far the Medical College Admission scam is concerned I have just got hold of the state high court SIT preliminary report. I have resources through which I can get off record interview of the Judges involved. I do think it goes against journalistic ethics to broadcast an off record opinion though." Ananya asked trying to raise the adrenalin levels in Kabir she knew very well a good story was the only thing that could give him a high.
"Ms. Kashyap are you hell bent to get our channels closed. Just yesterday we have been served with a notice because of the google hangout we did with ex chief minister Delhi. You forgot to blip or edit the defamatory statements he made" Manav said trying to remind Ananya the soup that she had landed in, and the worst part was that it was served to the entire channel, piping hot. Had it not been for Kabir's intelligence they would have been slapped with a full blown law suit and then penalized with a 100 crore in damages. He had been able to contact the ruling party and pacify the high command by a mere rendering of an apology. They learnt it just today that the Ex-CM was now bearing the brunt.
"Do you have an authorized version of the SIT preliminary Report Ms Kashyap."
"Yes sir."
"Since we are covering this story passionately we would be ok to telecast a SIT preliminary report. Do share it with me. So far the off record statement goes lets us see what it is and then try to find evidentiary support for it ASAP. Once we get that we can show it in the next few days as our speculation and questions. Every journalist is free to ask questions. Having said that I would suggest all of the people involved in medical scam story to be overly cautious as this is getting as red as it can."
"Oh Teri kahani kaise lal hoti hai sir ji" This was again Baby
"Lal hona matlab kahani khatam ho jaati hai." Manav told Baby moving his thumb on his neck to show a slaughtering gesture
"Haww to koi mar bhi gaya"
"Koi nahi bahut saare mar gaye"
"Sacchi Ronnie"
"We are done" Kabir couldn't endure it any more. He moved out with Malvika, "You couldn't get a better specimen than her could you?" Malvika's mouth curved into a caustic smile "I thought you had a special fondness for specimens."
"Coffee?" he asked opening his cabin door for her
"Well you have already made it quite clear that you weren't interested in a relationship and I don't waste time for nothing on coffees."
"Well then how about working out the kinks in your brief for your Friday show over a cup of coffee."
"Kya baat hai Kabir Sharma, something special today? How come norms like me caught your attention. I would take a raincheck for now." Only if she could notice the irritation evident in his entire body language she would have understood that this conversation would be anything but friendly.
...
It was nearly 5:30 PM and Ananya was done with today's segment of the story. She was assisting Kabir in PCR today. He had been busy all day and she had missed him terribly. Not that she had time to think much about it but then some things come as naturally to you as breathing. She raised her head from the pile of paper in front of her and glanced at him. Her heart was caught in her throat, he had been looking intently at her, with need so profound that a wave of warmth coursed through her veins. After he confessed a few months ago he did not even try to hide his glares or the desire they contained from her any more. Her phone beeped.
"Where are you with the SIT report?"
"All set. Mailing them to you right now." And she mailed it to him.
"Have a few spare minutes?"
"Yes."
"Join me for a snack. I will pick you."
"Ok" Ananya picked up her small camel backpack and went to Ronnie "I am leaving for a while will be back"
"Kahan ja rahi hai tu?"
"Nashta Pani."
"Kiske saath"
"Don ke saath" and she winked at him. "tu maregi" he smiled back. He was her only confident in the office who knew about her affair with Kabir. He had at a point wanted to be in kabir's shoes but then he was sensible enough to understand when it was a lost battle. More over for him it was an issue of convenience more than love. He found Ananya very easy and friendly, a person with whom life would be hassles free. Ananya was low maintenance girl and Ronnie loved her as a person. He had very gracefully stepped aside. It was lucky for him that he never confessed about his feelings to her. He found it quite admirable the way they both had been able to handle their affair. People did have slight hunch of something cooking up but no one had any sort of clear idea. One day it appeared that he was seeing Malvika and the other day he appeared to be charming Baby away. It was only Ronnie who knew with all certainity what was going on. Ananya had left about 15 minutes ago when Malvika came to the PCR asking for her.
"Ronnie Ananya kahan hai?"
"Snack break liya hai usne." No sooner had he said it he noticed Malvika glancing towards Kabir's office he was still there. He Immediately understood what was going to happen. Malvika went to Kabir's office,
"Do you have a few spare minutes?"
"I never have seconds to spare Malvika let alone minutes. Is it important can it wait?"
"I was thinking of cashing the rain check now."
"OK I do have half an hour. Come on in." No body could enter his office without his permission not even Khalid such was his enforcement of discipline.
"EK baat to batao does being exclusive gives your ego a special boost?"
Kabir looked at her confused.
" May I come in sir and all. It hurts my self respect." She said looking at him sultrily. The woman was as straight as it could get. She neither gave hints nor could ever understand it.
"Technically you are my boss you could have called me to your cabin. I too would have entered with your due permission."
"Yea yeah discipline and all a good carpet to puch a lot of dirt under."
"You were here for an interview from me? I don't see the camera's rolling."
"Never mind I will do it myself. Are you going some where?"
"Why do you ask?"
Malvika noticed that Kabir had just glanced outside. She got up "just like that. Mind having a snack break together."
He looked out once again restlessly, Ananya was back on her seat. He was sure Ronnie must have messaged her. He even recalled that they had a code for Malvika some thing like Evilin. Ananya was apparently perfectly fine. This was a very bad indication. The calmer Ananya appeared the bigger the volcano brewed inside her. His AC was on coolest setting and he still had to pat his forehead with a tissue to wipe off the droplets of sheer fear.
Malvika looked outside and then got up smiling gloriously and left saying "looks like you are busy I will come some other time." She had snatched his only daily dose of peace and converted it in soul scathing hell. He was sure she knew what she was doing but he had to keep silent about it. He was fed up of this covert affair that he had with Ananya. At times it almost felt sinister to have such an affair with her. If he could train his heart he would have done so long back. He was a man of exemplary self-control but some how Ananya had been able to bring him down. He no more wanted to control himself or his heart. The worst part was now his basic instincts too were gaining control of his being. He knew his sanity was being plundered away a piece at a time. It was imperative that he took some step to restore some sense of sanity to himself. He gazed at her sinuous form once again and then looked at her face. She was an angel and a siren all at once. A sharp contrast to his dry and conniving personality she was straight forward and witty. An unlike trait in women, she was young and yet was very sensible, she was intelligent and yet not proud. She was beautiful and totally unaware of it. From her funky bracelets to her funny hairstyles, from her silly attire and her shabby boots, everything about her had captured Kabir right from the word go. He could never find a reason as to why he felt so strongly for her. He wanted her to be solely close to him. Only he understood the rage that fumed within him when she hugged around people specially Manav. Like her he too was a professional and if she could endure Malvika's hugs with graceful indifference, there was no way he could ask her to refrain from hugging Manav. Ronnie he accepted but then she also had been so with Tarini. He needed to do something to put people in their right places but more than that he needed to do something to rid himself of this difficult situation and he had made up his mind about his next course of action.
