Maninee in Remix, Sarrkkar
By: Shaheen Parkar
July 9, 2005

Maninee De
Maninee De (Pari of Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin) will soon be seen in two more shows — Remix on Star One and Sarrkkar on Zee.

The actress terms it as being seen in distinct roles displaying a gamut of emotions. "People have this Pari image in their mind, but after my recent cameo in the legal drama Siddhant (Star One), I want to try a mix of roles."

Party planner

In Rose Audiovisual's teen show Remix, she plays the character of Chee Chee, a party planner who enters Maurya High (the school where Remix is set).

The occasion is Tia (Shweta Gulati) and Anvesha's (Priya Wal) 18th birthday celebrations. It's party time for the students as Chee Chee is entrusted with the task of organising the bash.

"She is the kind of woman who has just walked out of a finishing school. She is a woman with a 'teach me something else now' attitude. Chee Chee leaves the students in a tizzy," says Maninee. Her character is slated to enter Remix next week.

Mixing with Remix

Shweta (Tia) — Having done a film (Detective Nani), I find television work very taxing. Not only does it mean very long work hours but also a whole lot of fast work since we have to produce software for the daily one-hour show. But I am also very comfortable doing television. Despite the fact that the Remix contract doesn't allow me to do anything else, I signed it on because I knew what I was getting into, I knew how big Remix would be. Also, dancing is my biggest passion and this serial being all about music and dancing, I said yes straightaway and I have been enjoying every moment on the sets.

Anvesha (Priya) — I have never planned anything in my life. I always wanted to be Steffi Graf and believed I had her slice backhand and strong forehand. I also used to defeat all the boys in school but I soon realised that passion remains passion and doesn't become a job. So I moved on to modelling and did work for big fashion labels, like that of Ritu Kumar and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Then Remix happened and I had to colour my hair red for the character of Anvesha. Sometimes when I look in the mirror, I do regret it, but then I become happy when I see girls in Bangalore colouring their hair like me. As for the language, my character is Bengali, but I don't really have to speak the language on screen.

Raj (Yuvi) — I did my law course from Symbiosis but showbiz is something I always wanted to do. I was shortlisted for the MTV VJ hunt and also went on to do some VJing for Zee Music. I also did a couple of music videos like Leena Leena and Kabhi aar kabhi paar. But after that life became Remix. I must admit apart from the love for music, I do not relate to my character at all. But then it's a job I do and I am ready to do the saas-bahu serials also if needed.

Karan (Ranvir) — I am the youngest of the four and will turn 19 on June 9. So I am constantly pampered on the sets. They treat me like a kid and I love it that way. I am doing a course in business administration. But now with this acting thing on, business has become secondary. I have also done other stuff like played cricket for the state, played football and been the only guy to play drums in my school. But now it's only Remix and I hope it continues that way...

"She pulls my leg by calling me mom….but what can I do??
I am her mom, after all!"

She is the mother of the self-proclaimed brat. Soniya Kapoor, who plays diva mom to Anvesha (Priya Wal) on Remix, is the typical NextGen mom, one who believes in changing the norms of society rather than change herself. "Soniya is a different kind of a mom. She had Anvesha when she was only 15, so the difference in their ages is not much. Then there is her friendly attitude towards all the kids in school, which too makes her very special. She is a diva, she is a mother and that is her charm," says Soniya, who was at first reluctant to take up the role of a mother on screen. Whoever has seen the show will not forget the smartly dressed woman who overpowers everyone with her very presence, such is the impression that Soniya leaves on the viewer. The mother daughter banter is a treat to watch, a clash of minds that dwell primarily on similar issues. Anvesha is a far cry from the Kkusums and Jassis of this world and it is difficult to keep up with her tantrums, but Soniya manages to hold her own…even off the sets --- "Priya is a very dear friend. We go out shopping together, we watch movies and party, I really enjoy being with the young crowd. She pulls my leg by calling me mom….but what to do?? I am her mom, after all!" says Soniya with a laugh. A mother with a lot of spice, we say….wish more mothers were like her!

Is priya interested in making it to the big screen? "I hope so,"
she says, adding, "I have been offered a few roles, but I am not
interested in a typical Bollywood movie. I would love to work in
crossover cinema as I can relate more to it. If I get to act in
such
a film, I will grab that opportunity."

Besides acting, Priya loves buying music CDs, watching movies and
is into adventure sports.

She wants to go bungee jumping and skydiving someday. And what
does she enjoy about Malad? "That has to be Inorbit Mall.
Sakshi,
Suriely
and myself go out together on Sundays," says Priya.😃

She has taken the small screen by storm. Her portrayal of the school girl next door has been well received on Star One's Remix series. Priya, a Delhi girl who loves Mumbai, believes that her attitude is her hottest and most sizzling asset. "I have that Lolita look! And I have the right attitude. I believe the show portrays the youth of
the times and that's what works," she says of 'the series.
So how did television happen to the 'girl next door'? "I had no real break. I was modelling and that's when I got noticed. That set the ball rolling. I am happy with a youth-oriented role in a world saturated with family soaps. TV is evolving and I am at the right place at the right time."
The lady just loves her small screen self. ''TV is the visa to instant fame. It is such a 'now' world. I think that as television booms it
. will produce stars in their own right."
And what about fan mail? "Gawd, it can be embarrassing sometimes. I get mails from all age groups. Some are cute and some I would rather not talk about!" So is she comfortable with the combination of dyed red hair and the school uniform? 'Absolutely. This is what goes on in schools nowadays. What we show in Remix is just the tip of the iceberg," says the perky girl.
And is she interested in bagging more television roles beyond her current serial? "I have received some TV offers as well as a couple of movie offers. Though I am not really a Bollywood person, I would not mind thinking about the opportunities that have come my way. What I really want to do is a movie belonging to the cross-over genre," says the ambitious debutante. Are item numbers meant for her? "Not for me. I am not an item girl," is her attitude-loaded reply. So till a cross-over happens, stay glued to this bubbly gal on Remix

What do Priya (Anvesha), Sakshi (Vrinda) and Surili (Maria Priya) have in common, apart from the fact that they feature in the same serial, Remix (Star One)? The three of them also live together!

When Delhi girls Priya and Sakshi came to Mumbai, they started off living at Yari Road and Four Bungalows. And Surili, who lives in Vashi, used to travel long distances daily.

Three is company

The three girls met on the sets of Remix, a show in which they all act. From day one, it was clear to the trio, as well as everyone around them, that "three is company".

"We decided that we all should rent a place together. It would be fun, and save everyone a lot of money," says Priya. "And, the Mumbai traffic was killing us; we were looking for something close to Kamalistan Studio, where we shoot regularly."

So the girls got together and rented a two-bedroom flat in Malad (East). Priya has a room to herself, while Sakshi and Surili share the other room.

"We have divided the rent accordingly. I like to have a little more space," says Priya.

Shared dreams

What's an average day like at home when the girls are not working? "We are mostly chatting in a common room until we feel sleepy," says Sakshi, adding, "We talk about almost everything under the sun.

We share our secrets, and we share our dreams." Surili says the three don't seem to get enough of each other. "On the sets too, we chat all the time.

The unitwallahs ask us why we don't get bored with each other," she laughs.

The girls have hired a maid who keeps the house clean and the food ready. "We all love chicken. And we take turns to cook chicken, on Sundays, when we generally don't have to shoot."

While Surili's mom comes down from Vashi once in a while, Priya and Sakshi's parents in Delhi have still not visited their daughters.

"We don't have a car yet. We commute together by auto," says Sakshi. "We even wear each other's clothes before starting from home. We fit in easily. Kisi ko pata bhi nahin chalta."

Concludes Surili, "We gel so well. Our close proximity is one of the reasons why our output is good in Remix. It is very important to have mental peace and fun at home if one needs to give a hundred percent at work."

Star One: The road ahead

Star One will become Number 2 to Star Plus. November is the plan. It is growing week on week. TGILC (The Great Indian Laughter Challenge) has really caught on; Remix is doing very well; the game shows are performing. It takes time, it's a new channel. Sony, Zee and Star Plus for that matter have been around for 10 years. And now there are some super hot shows coming up in the next couple of months. In the next two to three months, we'll do exciting programming and build on it and expand it.

Siddhant Karnick Interview
Siddhant Karnick plays Arjun Khanna, the senior prefect at Maurya High, in the Star One daily Remix who takes undue advantage of his position.

He is the main roadblock in the Tia - Ranvir love story in the show. Siddhant, who makes his acting debut with Remix, has done a stint of modelling and compering.

Here are 10 things about him…

Do you believe in astrology and numerology?

I've been a salsa instructor. I got paid 100 rupees per class but I didn't mind because the women were good!

What is your favourite smell?
My grandmom's bombil fry!

Where in Mumbai would you like to live?
At Bandra Bandstand — the way e Shah Rukh Khan lives in his bungalow

Remix's 'cool dude' in ICU

The after effects of the flood are being felt in Mumbai with the alarms of an epidemic of leptospirosis and dengue fever being sounded. The cast of Remix the show on Star One however has been going around in a bit of a tizzy since the past couple of weeks. Reason: One of their cast members is in the Intensive Care Unit.

Habib: sorely missed!

'Cool dude' Nakul aka Habib Mithiborwala is in hospital, after being stuck in his car for almost 18-hours on terrible 'Tuesday' 26 July.

Habib, who plays the likeable hypocrite in the youth show, is a favourite with his co-actors and they miss his presence on the sets.

"We are really missing him. You know, Nakul is Nakul, you cannot help but miss his energy," says Kunal, who plays Varun in the show.

Gaurav who plays Sid says that he would like Nakul to return Asap as he is really missing him. Yuvi, Tia, Anvesha and Ranveer wish that their friend and co-star would get well soon.

Nobody knows what actually happened but his friends tell us that Nakul was caught in the

We are a family!: the cast of 'Remix'

rains while driving back from the sets. In order to save himself from the deluge, he locked himself in his vehicle. Following that, his car doors apparently would not open. He later developed cramps, got dizzy and finally blacked out. He was unconscious when he was helped out of the car.

Almost a fortnight later his lower limbs seem to be most affected by the ordeal. Reports are that he has temporarily lost movement in his legs. But his anxious friends, fellow actors, technicians and fans are hoping that he will fight it out and return to the show quickly. They await his return. As do a lot of his fans. We at Telly Chakkar wish him a quick and full recovery! Go for it Cool Dude!
