Chapter 3, part 1 - Remorse
The morning sun was peeking through the clouds and Rudra, who was lying on his stomach, hugging his pillow, slowly opened his eyes. He had a piercing headache because of all the drinking last night. With a lot of difficulties he was finally able to hold his eyes open and the very first thing he saw was, "Paro" he softly mumbled. In the corner of the room she was, she hadn't moved from the spot since last night. Her arms hugging her legs, her head supported by the wall she slept, taking even breaths. He acknowledged how the tears on her face had dried out. She had been crying all night he understood. He slowly got up from his sleeping position and sat up on the bed.
He couldn't help but to be mesmerized by her innocent beauty, how calm ... how pure ... and how delicate she managed to look in her sleep which made him heart flutter.
Concern immediately shoot across him as he noticed a small cut on her wrist and soon he remembered how he had tightly held her wrist last night, causing her bangles to break. His concern was soon taken over by deep remorse. He got up from bed and moved towards her. He reached out to her with soft eyes, but suddenly stopped and clenched his hand into a fist and turned his back against her and closed his eyes.
He recalled how, in front of his seniors he had been questioned and he helplessly stood in front of them. How he was accused for misusing his authority. How his rank, his belt, his gun, the stars on his uniform - everything he held dear was taken away from him.
He couldn't look into the peoples' eyes who he highly respected. No answers he had, no proof he had to submit. His soul was screaming but no one heard it.
The only thing that mattered to him was being taken away from him and he couldn't do anything. BSD wasn't only his pride but his identity.
During childhood he was labelled as the son of a run-away mother. With great difficulties, he made a new identity, leaving the son of a run-away behind, who was unable to face anyone out of shame, too Major Rudra Pratap Ranawat who could have his head held high and look straight into peoples' eyes.
He opened his eyes and looked down on Paro again, but this time in anger as he held her responsible for what happened but then her face reminded him of her quiet sobs as he leaned closer to her last night. He remembered the fear which her eyes held and how she was shaking, and begging to let her go. Memories of last night made him clinch in disgust over his own actions.
He had no answer to the question if she deserved what happened last night but he surly knew that what happened last night was wrong but then he remembered how she had slapped him which erased his regret but something inside him questioned, why he always tried to find a reason to hate her which he chose to ignore.
"Paro!" he called out to her but no response. Once again he called out to her but still she hadn't waken up which made Rudra annoyed. He called out to her once more with a higher tone. When he found his attempts useless he walked over to her side and bent down on one knee and shook her shoulder and her head fell on his chest.
Panic and concern quickly took over as he realized she was unconscious. "Paro, Paro, aankhe kholo. Kholo aankhe,Paro!" he frantically said, trying to shake her to consciousness, but her closed eyes remained closed. He brought his hand to her forehead to check her temperature only to realize that she was burning up. He quickly took her in his arms and laid her comfortably on the bed and immediately called the doctor.
*************************
Unconscious Paro let out a small shriek in pain as the doctor injected her.
"Dhyaan se", Rudra said and push the doctor aside and sat beside Paro on the bed. Taking her hand in his and softly caressing her forehead, "dard hora hai usse" he stated. His eyes filled with concern as he looked down on Paro didn't go unnoticed by anyone in the room. "Kaise hai woh?" Rudra asked.
"Nothing to be too worried about, Major! Bas high fever hai islie kamzori hai. Agar ache se aaram karegi aur jo dawai mene likhi hai, yeh isse waqt se denge toh mere hisab se 2-3 din mein ye thik ho jayegi." Rudra breathed out in relief and his facial expression soften up hearing that Paro will be fine soon.
Before walking out with the doctor he asked bhabisa to take care of Paro, til he is back.
"Paro, thik hai na?" Rudra asked once again by the entrance, which made doctor smile. Putting one hand on Rudras' shoulder doctor stated "Lagta hai ap apni patni se bohot pyaar karte hai. Mrs Ranawat bohot khush kismat walhi hai. Itna pyaar karne wala pati joh mila hai" to which Rudra got shocked but went unnoticed by the doctor who continued, "Mrs Ranawat bilkul tik hai, Major. Fikar karne ki koi waja nahi hai. Kuch din mein thik ho jayengi. Agar unki tabiyat aur kharab hui toh mujhe phone karna. Ab me chalti hoon.Take good care of your wife and have a good day." Doctor said with a smile and left.
Rudra stood there stunned. What the doctor said left him in the state of being confused. As the doctors' words echoed in his mind, he put his one hand on the wall and closed his eyes and tried hard to understand or name his feelings towards Paro but was unable to do so. Who was she to him? What was she to him he forced to ask himself.
"Rudra, baat karni hai tumse. Mere saath, kamre me aa!" Dilsher said suddenly from behind which brought back Rudra from his deep thoughts.
*************************
"Kya baat karni?" Rudra asked annoyed as Dilsher closed the door to his room making sure no one could hear.
"Kya kia tuhe uske saath? Mein janta hu ki teri wajah se uski tabiyat itni kharab hui hai" Dilsher accused Rudra with a stern voice. "Tu usse kya dikhana chahta hai? Ki tu usse nafrat karta hai?"
"Haan main usse nafrat karta hun" Rudra said, not being able to look into to Dilshers' eyes. "Har din, har waqt usse ye ehsaas dilana chahta hu ki uska faisla galat tha. Issi liye maine usse shadi ki hai". Though he was trying to sound determined his father could see right through him.
"Nafrat karta hai usse?" Dilsher asked mockingly "Kise jhoot bol raha hai? Tu usse pyaar karta hai isilie tune usse shaadi ki" Dilsher stated as a matter of fact.
"Bakwas!" Rudra said in denial, shaking his head.
"Bakwas? Acha, mhaare ko ek baat bata, Agar Parvati ki jagah pe koi aur hota toh? Tab bhi tu aisa karta?"
Looking away from Dilsher, he said yes to which Dilsher couldn't hold back a laugh, "Mhaare se jitna jhoot bolna hai bol le lekin kam se kam khud se jhoot mat bol. Paro teri kuch lagti hai, mene apni aankhon se dekha hai, woh fikar, who tadap" and carefully Dilsher said "woh pyaar ... jo tu uske lie mehsoos karta hai. Tu ye jitna jaldi sweekar kar le utna acha hai"
The Dilsher walked up to Rudra and put a hand on Rudras' shoulder, forcing him to look into his eyes, "choti umar me bohot kuch dekha hai Parvati ne, zindagi ne usse khush rehne ke koi khas mauke nahi diye hain. Bohot pyaari hai, bohot masum hai woh. Mein bas itna keh raha hun ki tu usse aur takleef mat de" Dilsher said and began to walk out of the room but halted by the door, tightly holding the doorknob he said, "mein janta hoon, jo zeher, jo nafrat tumhare andar hai woh mene dala hai aur mujhe bohot afsos bhi hai. Takleef hoti hai. Rudra, mein bas chahta hun ki tu apne beete hua kal ko bhula ke ek nayi shuruwat kare... Parvati ki saath"and with complete confidence he said "Woh tumhara saath kabhi nahi chodegi Rudra! Kabhi nahi" and closing his eyes he quietly added, "Woh teri maa jaisi nahi hai, Rudra" and walked out of the room leaving Rudra alone with his thoughts.
Did she matter to him he asked to himself to which he profoundly denied but then moments with her flashed in front of his eyes;
Their first meeting! How he had saved her honor.
"Kiska byaah?" Aman asked, to which her friend answered, "iska, Paro ka byaah" which tugged his heart that day for some reason but chose to ignore it.
Her scream in agony when he shoot her husband. For a small second, it mattered to him.
Every time she looked at him as a murderer and called him a jallad, it mattered.
when she said "issi lie shayad akele ho, aur zindagi bhar akele hi reh jaoge", her words hurt him for an moment.
How she stood up for bhabi sa in front of kaki sa.
How despite hating him, she made medicine for his wound
How she burned her hands to avoid putting mehedi in his name.
When she slapped him last night, he couldn't help but to admire her courage
Her stubbornness
Her caring nature
Her innocence
Her tears
Her pain
Her smile
All mattered. Everything mattered. Her words, her actions, her emotions, it attered to him and he had no choice but to accept it but why he questioned himself out loud, punching his fist on the wall. Why?
