Hi Sush,
You've made some interesting points. To be honest, I don't know what the exact reason is for RR to not do very well with the TRP audience but I have a few guesses.
It's doing very well with the online crowd that consists of Indians ( some are TRP audience and some are just online viewers), NRIs, Indian subcontinent folks etc. It's also doing very well in UK. It has pulled a lot of male viewers which does not happen very often.
I don't want to sound judgmental but after watching a couple of Hindi soaps and following the TPR trends over the last few years, I got the impression that TRP audience don't want to try shows that are out of the box. Love stories...especially the ones focusing on love hate themes...have a niche audience. They do well too but It's the same saas bahu formulas and family dramas that score the highest ratings.
RR started off with a very different concept...something people weren't familiar with. It is a love-hate story with an unusual backdrop. It worked with the online crowd, worked overseas and even attracted male viewers...but didn't click very well with the regular TRP audience.
We tried watching it on really high recommendation from a friend...but just couldn't understand the story...
Since I am watching it from the beginning, it's hard for me to say how people who have started watching it from the middle would react to it. I don't think you can understand the plot of any show right away, if you didn't follow it from the beginning...unless it's too predictable. But then, making it predictable would lessen the interest of regular viewers. If an ongoing show catches my eye, I would watch a few episodes to understand.
From a non Hindi speaking person...I don't get the name...what does Rangrasia mean?
Well, it sounds very nice. I am not Indian but I speak Hindi very well. I wasn't familiar with the term either because it's not used very often...but since I know what rang means and what rasiya means, I connected the two. Is it really important to understand what title means? 😕 I mean people watched the movie Kai po che right? It's a Gujarati term and I don't know if everyone was familiar with the term or they read the book.
What's the plot? ( That should hook me)
I think it all comes down to personal taste. The show definitely has a strong plot and it has me hooked.
The show seems too heavy, and sad...I want something entertaining...
It is heavy. Personally I am fine with the content of the show but in the long run, shows do need some entertaining moments a midst the seriousness. I think they are slowly heading towards that. With Thakursa out of the picture for sometime...they are going to focus of Parud's love story. So hopefully, there will be entertaining moments in the upcoming episodes. Balance is the key. 😊 They need work a bit more on Paro's character to develop a deeper, emotional connect between Paro and the general TRP audience and I think they are slowly working towards it.
Personally, I am still not very worried about TRPs. 😳 It's slowly and steadily rising and last week we had 0.4 rise. It already has a steady viewership. I wouldn't expect rise this week...we might even see a drop because of the T20 world cup.
Having weekend Marathon run of the last few episodes...explaining the story in the background.
Definitely.
Have promos with a clear message about what the show is about...(keeping in mind why a new viewer would want to watch it...your "value proposition" in the marketing lingo)
I completely agree. I think they need to work on the promos.
Having a nice montage...focusing on characters and emotions...not horrible situations...and please listen to what I have been telling you form last 10 weeks or so...DROP THE IMAGE OF A GUN TROTTING RUDRA and PARO SITTING WITH HER HANDS TIED at the BACK IN the MONTAGE!
It is high time for a montage change.
Having fun moments laced in...
Ditto.
If they work on these few aspects without deviating from the original concept, I am hopeful it will do even better.
