Rangrasiya and Othello

I absolutely love Shakespeare's Othello, the complexity of the main character and how he stumbles from a respected leader to a murderer. I know the story-line isn't similar, but the characters from Rangrasiya do have traits of the characters in Othello.

Rudra, like Othello have built their life from nothing to a respected position. Great emphasis is given in their childhood: Othello as a black man has had to earn his position in society which was difficult for him because of his colour. Maybe it's because of this prejudice against him that made him want to show people what he is capable of. Similarly, Rudra has this negativity from society of being the son of a mother who has left her husband and son. And it's because of this that led him to not being able to trust women. And yet, what both men want is the chance to have a relationship but it's their situation that doesn't allow them to. I know, they might not be a downfall of Rudra in a similar way to Othello's, but there definitely will be a downfall of some sort - when he falls for Paro, and his life as a BSD officer clashes, then there will be one.

I feel like the other characters symbolise the characters from Othello: such as the Thakur and his men symbolise the character of Iago: a man who manipulates to get what he wants. Similarly, the Thakur manipulates the villagers for his own profit, to become a King in true sense, despite who gets hurt. The only difference is that Iago was able to manipulate Othello whilst here, Rudra knows the Thakur's secrets.

Perhaps Paro can be seen as having traits of Desdemona, the woman Othello loves, who is often seen as a submissive character. But whereas Desdemona had a good upbringing, Paro had a sad childhood & with Varun's possible death, maybe she does learn to stand up for herself after when she is captured by Rudra. It's Paro that will bring changes to Rudra, whilst it was Desdemona who brought changes to Othello (although in that context, it was bad changes however it'll be nothing like that in rangrasiya). Paro will be the one, in whose innocent nature that leads to Rudra becoming human, and not like the rock with no feelings that he is now. It's Paro that will reach into Rudra's soul.

Maybe it's Laila who has traits of Emilia, Iago's wife - who refuses to allow him to dominate her. Laila, like Emilia is progressive and outspoken, unlike the demure Paro/Desdemona. Laila is confident in herself and knows what she wants -- but unlike Othello, here she wants Rudra, and will be an obstacle when he falls for Paro. One thing I'd like to note is that in Othello, Emilia and Desdemona shared a close friendship and it was Emilia who helped Desdemona as well as unknowingly led to her murder [by getting Desdemona's handkerchief that led Othello to think Desdemona was cheating on him]. Today's scene I think might have mirrored that with Laila telling Paro about the three men, and the third one symbolising Rudra - her Rudra. I think it'd be interesting to see how Laila & Paro's relationship progresses after Rudra takes Paro away, and if Laila is with them as well. In the beginning, there would be no romantic angle between Paro-Rudra so if Laila is with them as well, then there would be some relationship progress for the two women. It's only when Rudra falls in love with Paro and she falls for him, that Laila's jealousy would turn her negative. [Although, how that happens I'm leaving that up for the show - I just hope the CVs do justice to all characters].

I'm not going to go too much into this but I think Varun might be Roderigo in a sense. Roderigo was in love with Desdemona and conspired with Iago to get rid of Othello so that he could marry her. I know Varun is the perfect man for Paro, and seems like he doesn't know about the guns and what is going on, if the CVs don't kill him off straight away, there's a chance he is brought back after Paro and Rudra fall in love - and he'll be an obstacle. I don't wish this happen but what happen will happen.

In short, I really hope the writers of rangrasiya do justice to everyone whether it's Rudra, Paro, Laila, the Thakur or anyone else. Also, I'm rooting for PaRud in the long run but I quite like LaiRud [is that their screen name? idk] as well - as well as Paro-Varun! PS, Paro's sister I don't even know her name but omg, that was such a sad death! >.<

Edit:
Apologies for such a long reserve😳
Thanks for a deliciously long post on Othello/RR comparison. I agree that there is little direct and linear resemblance between the storyline and plot, but there definitely is a sort of shadow of Othello's tragedy over it. The innocence and naivet of Paro (Desdemona), the reluctant, perhaps half-hearted complicity of Laila (Emilia) in future plots, the cunning evil of Thakur Tejavat (Iago), the insecurity driven dumb-headedness of Rudra...all scream of heavy influence of the play.
But going by the pre-show interviews, they have admitted to only the character of Rudr being inspired by Othello. Let's see how things unfold.
