Part 187 E
Delhi Haat
1 ish
After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to
And after all that's been said and done
You're just the part of me I can't let go
Couldn't stand to be kept away
Just for the day
From your body
Wouldn't wanna be swept away
Far away
From the one that I love
Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to know
(Courtesy: Chicago)
He wants to call his driver, but fishes his wallet out first,
Shaan: Can I have the phone, I will give it right back to you? (begs)
Khanak: Sorry! (hands it back)😳
He asks the guy to come by to where they are standing, asks him to take the planters with him to the car.
Khanak: I think its packed well
He doesn't respond'' just nudges her to move fwd
Shaan: I am not going to argue Khanak
She stops at every store, while he texts and calls, she turns around and looks at his face for opinion, he does a thumbs up or down depending on what he thinks of it, mostly down
Khanak: Gosh! You are hard to please! (sulking)
Shaan: I am'.
Even if she doesn't want to buy, she lingers
He has to almost lift her up to make way for people.
Shaan: Watch where you are gawking and going Khanak! (exasperated)
Khanak: yaha hamesha itni bheed hoti hai
He looks at her dryly like "Ya like I AM the one that's causing this chaos"
She sprints to the Gujarat guy selling mirrorwork everything, she grins wide starts talking in Gujju and starts asking him to take stuff off of hiiigh hangers.
She finally zeroes in on a lehanga in mehandi color, it has a orange blouse
Shaan: You've got to be kidding me!YEH khareedogi? Cant you go home and buy it?
The guy speaks to Shaan in Gujarati
Shaan looks at his wife
Khanak (in Gujju) he does not speak Gujju, my husband's a Punjabi
Shaan: what did you tell him?
Khanak holding the lehanga on her waist "That my husband's a Punjabi"
And stops for a second, doesn't look at him
They both realize what she just said''.
He drums his fingers on his phone and looks away, she looks at her feet'..
She asks the price he quotes some Rs1850 or something
Shaan: I don't care for the blouse?
Khanak: KYON? Its gorgeous'
Shaan: It has too many hooks, pick a color that has a draw string at the back'. (softly)
Khanak bursts out laughing''..he smiles, a glorious, happy smile.
She picks the one with hooks ofcourse in the henna and orange combination, he pays for it, and they slowly stroll towards the back end, she crosses the center path way frequently to look at vendors selling tea cups, and earrings, and brass trinkets.
The smell of food wafts through, she begins to get hungry''
She buys more things that appeal to her and pays when ever he cannot notice, he calls his driver again and asks him to take the stuff to the car.
She stops at the Assam store selling everything from tea to silk, she sees a lovely saree in maroon she knows he Mom will like a lot.
She checks on the price the gal in traditional gear responds with a Rs 2740.
Khanak loves it, she is not sure if she has that much money left.
Shaan: Who is it for? (he can tell its not for her)
Khanak is quiet but responds with a "Bai" softly
Shaan: Oh!
Pause
Shaan: are you going home?
Khanak: Abhi nahi.. I want to (but my Aada wants me to sort my life out first)
Shaan: how long?
Khanak shakes her head as a lump forms in her throat "Aada wants me to visit for an occasion, like Navratri and such"
She wants to tell him badly that she is lonely and is disenchanted with her own folks, but stops herself''.
Nods her head the girl packs it, she pays the money, she has less than 2 grand left
She looks at the tea, and buys three kinds, another Rs450 vanishes''..
The Rajasthani store has the most exquisite hand crafted what looks like a window frame, its original but embellished and restored''.
Khanak: wow, wow' wow
Shaan: WINDOW FRAME? Kahan lagaogi?
She looks at it deeply, turns around and asks him "How about using it as a picture frame for some real nice work of art?
He stares into her eyes, its sparkling with ideas, she seems happy again'''. "Gosh! Lovely!" she repeats again
Checks he price, the guy says " 4400" she gives him a dirty look and walks away in huff''
Khanak: I am going to eat (declares)
Shaan: YAHAN?
Khanak: Jee!
She walks purposefully, he sprints, catches up, and pulls her scarf off''
Khanak smiles "Aaha!" "You cant get your way every time" she has a scuncie underneath''.
Shaan: Why did you cut your hair?
Khanak: Cant braid it, its too heavy, too long to leave it open in bed, it gets all tangled'.
He fantasizes how that would be'..
She is ordering her fave South Indian food, she looks up at him
Shaan: Don't eat here, Samar is almost here, lets go get something to eat at Hyatt''
Khanak: Ummm' mmm
She finds a table sits down, not the most sparkling clean nor comfy, she starts to eat
Khanak: aap?
Shaan: Ill pass (mocking)
Gets up and brings two bottles of water, just in time actually coz the food is burning hot'.. she drinks almost half a bottle when Samar shows up
Samar: Hi! You two
The guys do the back slapping hug routine
She gets up and gives him a hug
Khanak: Aap khaayenge?
Samar: Oooh! I would love to (sits by her)
Shaan shakes his head "Oh the starved NRI routine?" (smirks)
Samar: Like you attacked the clam chowder and Big Mac in January
Laughs at Shaan
Looks at Khanak she is somber, Samar knows Shaan's visit kicked off their separation. Being utterly classy and well bred like Shaan himself, he treads carefully
Samar: I love our food (trying to change the topic)
Husband and wife are reliving those shocked tragic moments from Jan
Khanak: kya lekar aaoon?
Samar: Dahi vada ,may be?
She goes off, gets one for herself''
Returns with it, he eats more than half'''the guys talk about foot ball, Apple and Obama''. She chimes in with her thots on the last two''.
Shaan: Lets get some real food man
Khanak knows its her time to say good bye
Samar excuses himself to go get some soda.
Shaan: Kitni der khaoogi, It doesn't look that great.
Khanak: You guys should get going, I will call Swati and Ira
He pulls his sun glasses off and looks at her''
Shaan: I am not leaving you here (Delhi Haat) Chalo! (firm)
To her ear it sounds like the first word''.. her heart soars at being wanted, and sought and craved'''.
Khanak: Aapke saath ?(lost in thought, savoring his possessiveness)
Shaan:Mere saath! (grins warmly, mimicking her Hindi)
