Part 8
'You know Bhaiya, I'm not DYING to talk to her!' he said to Akshay for the 15th time in the last 10 minutes, relaxing on the sofa after coming back from another crazy audition. 'I don't even know what I am supposed to have done to be experiencing the silent treatment suddenly!' Akshay just nodded with a 'hmmm' and said nothing. He was much too smart to begin giving a lecture to his little brother.
Every morning at the breakfast table when Khanak would be there pointedly ignoring him, Shaan, would announce at the top of his voice, "Main AUDITION kay liyay jar raha hoon!! Theek hain!!Audition kay liyay!" and he'd look at Khanak who wouldn't look up. It annoyed him to no end. Khanak, one day finally fed up of trying to guess what her husband did for a living, cautiously asked Khushboo Bhabhi about it.
'Audition?' Khushboo said surprised, figuring out what she was asking. "Errm Khanak, Shaan gaanay gaata hain. Woh ek ----ermmm----what do you call it?" she said snapping her fingers, trying to recall " Gaayak hain----Singer".
Khanak looked at her surprised. She felt suddenly very happy. So, Shaan worked! 'Toh main kya karoon!' she said to herself in her head, raised her nose in the air and went back to her room. But even she couldn't deny that it made her proud. What was wrong with her?
Health wise, Khanak had started feeling better. Her pains had either lessened or she was finally immune to them, she thought. She felt her life 'sort of' getting back to normal again. But there were still so many things that were unclear. So many questions that needed to be answered. She didn't know who to go to for explanations and that had frustrated her. Sometimes, she'd just calm her mind and relax, like Dr. Mitul had told her. She felt inextricably connected to the doctor for some reason and would hold him in high esteem.
Dr. Mitul would visit the Khandelwal house every second day on the pretense of doing Khanak's check up but Shaan often teased him about wanting to get a glance of Natasha as he was missing her. Mitul, who was not a die-hard romantic like Shaan, used to blush profusely and murmur something about wanting to talk to Natasha about 'work' when Shaan would walk in on them meeting each other outside the building before Mitul left. Khanak wondered why Mitul would come to the house too but unlike Shaan, she could not put two and two together.

1st December 2011.
The start of the month brought good news for Shaan. He was offered to sing 2 songs for Yash Raj's next movie. Sunil was beside himself with joy when he picked up the call from the production house at home when Shaan was away. Just then Shaan entered the house with a wide smile on his face, a bit damp and holding a mithai box in his hand. It had been drizzling, the first rain of the winter. He wanted to share his happiness with Khanak first, like always but he was stunned when his father strode over to him and hugged him tightly. "I'm so proud of you beta! A YASH RAJ movie! Goshhh who's the actor!? Shahrukh? Can I get his autograph? Can I---- Why are you wet?" he asked surprised.
"Daddd!" Shaan said clearly disappointed, ignoring Sunil's question. "HOW did you find out? I wanted to tell Khanak pehlay!"
"Yea tell her if she cares" Sunil murmured sarcastically rolling his eyes, in a low enough volume so Shaan could not hear.
"What?!" Shaan said.
"Nothing---nothing----Jaooo Khanak ko batao---Jao jaooo---but Oh my Goddd a Yash Raj movie----" Sunil's eyes went all dreamy as he stared into space.
Shaan gave him an I-don't know-this-guy look and went up the stairs, taking two at a time. He stopped before entering Khanak' s room, pushed back his semi wet hair, passed his hand on the cover of the wet box, trying to wipe away the rain from it, and wiped his forehead a bit too. He took a deep breath and slowly opened the door. Khanak was standing in front of the bhagwan ki murti, her eyes closed, her hands pressed together, praying. Shaan just stood and looked at her for a while, taking in everything about her. He missed her so much, it stung him. He walked in as Khanak finished praying and turned around. She saw Shaan and turned her back towards him again. Shaan raised his eyebrows and smiled. He thought he knew what to do.
"Naraz ho?" Shaan asked tentatively, balancing himself with the pillar as he stood slantingly.
Khanak turned her head towards the other direction, her huffy nose in the air, still not looking at him.
"Baat nahi karna chahti?" Shaan asked again, moving a bit closer to her in the direction of where her face was turned.
Khanak turned her face away to the other side, folded her hands and said nothing.
Shaan moved closer to her as she continued to have her back towards him but felt the warmth of his proximity. "Chalo----issi bahanay thori dair shaanti toh rahegii-----" he said and grinned naughtily. Khanak turned sharply and looked at him. He looked back at her. Something about what Shaan had said felt familiar to Khanak. Something about the way he looked today felt familiar to Khanak too. Yellow shirt, wet hair. But what was it? Why couldn't she remember? She turned away from Shaan again and moved forward.
"Kyun ayay hain aap yahan?" she asked and notice her heart beat going unusually high again.
"Wohh main----wohhh main----" and then suddenly he grinned really widely as he saw a sheet messily strewn over the floor. He walked forward, pretended to entangle himself in it and fell face forward over Khanak, who had just turned in the instant that Shaan had made a dramatic noise. They both fell on the bed, Shaan on top of Khanak, the box of mithai flying from his hand and strewn all over the bed, carpet and side tables. Khanak was so engrossed at looking at her favourite mithai strewn all over her room that she hardly registered the damp form of Shaan on top her, almost crushing her with his weight.
"Mohan Daal!!" Khanak said, stretching her hand out to reach for a piece on the bed. Shaan laughed at her excitement as the memories of the day they had first met engulfed him. Shaan's laughter was enough to bring Khanak to her senses. Pushing Shaan strongly so that he fell towards the other side of the bed she said to him " Agar mithai uthaani nahi aati toh uthatay kyun hain?!"
"What?!" Shaan said. "Tum nay hee yay chaadar beech main phainkee hui thee! Chadar fold nahi karni aati kya!?" he said loudly.
"Kya?!" Khanak said confused.
"Fold---" he demonstrated with his hands. "C'mon Khanak you know what 'fold' means!"
"Mujhay pata hain!" Khanak said loudly.
Shaan looked at her in disbelief. She knew her English? How was that possible? He sat up on the bed too, wondering. Mitul had told him something about forgetting events, but not skills, forgetting situations, but not habits. He noticed Khanak looking at him closely and quickly changed the topic.
" Wohh maiinn tumko----tumko-----mithai denay aya tha-----err mujhay ek naya Gaana gana -----Achooo!!" Shaan suddenly sneezed. Khanak giggled, then suddenly went somber as Shaan looked at her sharply. "Achooo! Achooo! Achooo! Achoo!" he sneezed in one go and held his head.
"Kis nay kaha tha sardi ki barish main na-hayain?!" Khanak asked, wisdom etched over her face.
Shaan got up annoyed. "Thank you for the 'Congratulations!'" he said, and begun to leave.
"Suniyay?" Khanak stopped him.
"Kya hain?!" Shaan said, without looking at her.
"Congra-shulations" she said innocently.
"Thank you!" Shaan said, attempting to leave again.
"Suniyay?" Khanak said again
"Kya hain?" Shaan said, again not turning to look at her.
"Aap ko sardi hogaee hain toh---toh----apko jadi booti kay garam paani say nahana chahiyay----"
Shaan rolled his eyes. "God!! Trust her NOT to forget the jadi booti!!" he gritted his teeth and said to himself. He turned, fake smiled and said 'Theek hain' before turning to the door again.
"Suniyaay?"
"Ub kya hain-----Achoo!" Shaan sneezed as he finished.
"Aap aur Natasha je eek doosray say pyar kartay hain na? Shaadi honay wali hain ap dono ki?" Khanak asked simply.
Shaan turned a complete 180 degrees this time and just looked at Khanak, too stumped to speak.
