Introducing: Mrs Malhotra, Mitul's mother.

Part 30

14th February 2011 10:00 AM

The excitement of the wedding that was to take place the next day engulfed the entire Khandelwal family. Whereas on one side Dadi was getting frantic with the making of the sweets on the other side Khushboo was snapping at everyone who asked her the tiniest of questions. Madhvi's shopping yet consisted of getting Shaan's sherwani from the boutique. 'MOM! You left my sherwani for the end?! How could you!" Shaan said to a harassed looking Madhvi as she strode out of the house, Shaan following her angrily , while Sunil smirked in the background earning a glare from Shaan as he left with Madhvi to get his measurements and the perfect sherwani.

Natasha was made inchagre of the decorations which moistly consisted of yellow, pink and white flowers. She was also handling the lighting of the house. She accepted the job gratefully since it kept her well out of reach of Khushboo's tantrums which sadly Akshay had to face.

"So If I wear pink sari at the shadi, and Sonali -----you know Sonali right? Rohan's wife? ---yes if SHE wears pink too then WHAT the hell will I do?" She asked Akshay hysterically in her bedroom, which looked more or less like a ladies boutique now.

"Ermmm---welll----knowing you---you'd come up here and change immediately?" Akshay asked, removing a bunch of different yellow materials off the bed with his finger and making place to sit. "Khushboo, have you seen my laptop?" he asked cautiously. Khushboo gave him a dirty look which Akshay took to mean that he'd be better off looking for it under the pile of clothes himself.

Khanak was confined to her room again as more and more guests poured in, mostly Shaan and Akshay's cousins and second cousins. Dadi had given strict orders to not let anyone meet Khanak, fearing that if hse did she would catch the evil eye. 'Dulhan jub shadi kay joray main baahir ati hain---usee waqt sub usay dekh saktay hain----pehlay nahi---nazar lug jaati hain----" she said. Khanak, who had had a bad experience the pervious night, thought not to take any chances and kept the door locked staying indoors.

As Khanak looked at her dark mehndi she felt a thrill of excitement. She was getting married the next day! It still seemd like a dream and at other times she thought it was real. She could not see Shaan's name on her hands. It had got smudged the previous night. But even that sight did not take away the excitement from her heart. Shaan had consoled her. "Main tumharay saath hoon" he had said. Just those words echoing in her head made her forget all the talks of upshagun. They suddenly sounded silly.

The festive (and stressful) atmosphere of the wedding resulted in not only Shaan and Khanak forgetting that it was Valentines Day but the entire Khandelwal family. Everyone except Natasha.

"Happy Valentines Day---" Natasha whispered in Mitul's ear going close to him and up on tip toe as soon as Mitul entered the Khandelwal house for lunch that afternoon. Mitul smiled and looked down at her taking from her a combination of a pink, yellow and white flowers bunched together with a rubber band . It made Mitul snort with laughter, then gather his expressions before Natasha could get offended.

"Happy Valentines---" Mitul said softly, bending down to give Natasha a quick peck on the cheek.

"So!! " Natasha and Mitul both turned in shock when they heard a very familiar voice at the entrance. "Natasha! Have you got pregnant yet?!" It was Mitul's mother.

Mitul dropped the flowers in shock and Natasha did a double take. Mitul had finally confessed to his mother that he had married Natasha in a private ceremony in the mandir when she was away to America. Mitul's mother had dismissed the news as though Mitul had been telling her about just another random day. Mitul had heaved a sigh at his mother not being offended, not even close to caring that her only son had got married.

"Errr Mummy----"Natasha started, extremely nervous.

"Don't mummy jee me!" Mitul's mom said as she strode inside and made herself comfortable on the sofa while Mitul looked on guiltily and embarrassed at his mother's antics.

Sunil joined her and greeted her happily. "Mrs. Malhotra! Kaisee hain? Aap Shaan aur Khanak ki shadi main ayee----buhat acha laga----" he said genuinely happy to see her. Mrs. Malhotra gave Sunil a plastic smile. Mitul gulped.

"I asked if you're pregnant yet!" she threw her words at Natasha again when Sunil left, startling her. Natasha looked to Mitul for help, gulping.

"MOM! We JUST got married 2 weeks ago!!" Mitul said loudly, trying to knock some sence in his mother.

Mrs Malhotra gave Mitul a sarcastic look while Natasha looked embarrassed and looked away. "So?! You're not telling me you guys waited till AFTER you got married! You've bloody well been going out for a year now!"

"Mom----" Mitul said exasperatedly. "You know we were not living together-----"

"Oh yea? Then why this urgent need to get married may I ask?" she said raising her eyebrows. "I wold have thought Natasha is already 3 months into her pregnancy aren't you sweetheart?" she asked looking at Natsasha with a fake smile on her lips.

"No Mummu jee----Wohh shubh mahurat tha-----iss liyay------" Natasha fumbled.

"Yea well'that's your story----" Mrs Malhotra said taking out her filer to file her nails as Natasha's eyes widened. "Since when have you believed in all of this?" she rolled her eyes, then looked at Mitul "She had the key to your apartment----you think I'm silly----I've worked around these antics my whole life!----Your father and I used to go for vacations before our wedding---we lived in the best hotels too---" she said reminiscently.

Natasha giggled. Mitul's mouth opened in shock. "WHAT?! So----so even I was----?" he could not ask his mother what he wanted to ask. Whether he too was born out of wedlock. Natasha put her fist in her mouth to stop laughing.

"Don't be so silly Mitul----your father was a careful man--- not like you" Mrs. Malhotra said logically "---God bless him-----he would never impreg-----"

"Yea okay Mom I think that's enough!" Mitul cut her out hastily and looked around to see if no one was listening. Natasha was now wiping the tears that had come out with laughter and trying to keep a straight face. Mitul looked at his wife and raised his eyebrows as though he had taken lot of stress for the day. "Anyway----as I was saying-----we JUST got married-----hence----Tasha is NOT pregnant----Is that clear Mom? Now if you don't mind can we have lunch? Tasha WHERE is Shaan?!" he asked the last question very forcefully. Had Shaan been around he'd have handled his mom perfectly. It was not a secret that Mrs Malhotra was charmed by him.

"Oh yes where is my Prince in shining armour? Where is Khanak?" she asked Natasha with her plastic smile. "And YOU, when is the baby due? Six months from now, I assume?" she looked kindly at Natasha, then stared at her stomach to figure out her estimation.

"MOM!" Mitul started and Mrs Malhotra looked up. "Tasha is not----"

"Oh there comes my Prince! There comes my most spectacular boy, my handsome groom-----" Mrs Malhotra cut off Mitul and strode towards Shaan who had just entered the house, a frown on his face as he looked around. Mitul shook his head in exasperation.

"Hi Aunty----" Shaan said looking around and giving her half a hug, completely distracted with the hideos decorations of the flowers on the stair case railings and walls. "WHO did these flowers?" he asked making a face and looking straight at Natasha. "They look bad!"

Natasha looked unabashed. "Oh Megha did!" she said with a straight face as Mitul cricked his neck to stare at Natasha telling such a white lie.

"And it's a good thing too----" Mrs Malhotra said, nodding. "Natasha should not be working in such a state-----You cannot be pregnant and arrange flowers anyway-----I mean the smell---urghh----their fragrance I mean to say----it totally gets to the pregnant lady----and then there's morning sickness----and then-----OMGEEE Madhviii how are you?!" Mrs Malhotra flapped her arms to move forward and hug Madhvi who had entered too.

Shaan's eyes widened in shock and his mouth opened at the revelation of Natasha being pregnant. He looked at Mitul in horror who gave him an apologetic I'll-tell-you-later look. Natasha held her stomach in mock concern and made a sad face. Shaan looked at both with a mixture of disgust and awe. Then shaking his head as though to rid it off all memory he went to the guest room he lived in. His last day in the room, he thought as he opened the door and lay down on the bed tired.

'I love you Khanak" he texted her before falling asleep.

After much insistence from shaan's cousins Megha, Juhi, Ayesha and the fourteen year old Panchi, Khanak was allowed to leave her room and join in the celebrations. "I mean it doesn't make sense to have her locked up does it?" Madhvi said to a nodding Sunil. "Uskee shadi hain! Tumhari Maa bhee na kabhee kabhee ajeeb harkatay kartee hain!"

Khanak wore a bright green and pink sari that afternoon and delicately walked down the stairs with Megha and Panchi. Panchi kept looking at her in awe and then finally whispered in her ear, "Didi---aap na BUHAT khoobsoorat lug rahi hain! Buhattt zyada!" at which Khanak smiled broadly and hugged the little girl.

"Tumharay Shaan bhayya kahan hain?" Khanak asked Panchi, looking around and not seeing Shaan in the living room.

Panchi giggled and placed her palm on her mouth still giggling. "Shaan bhaiya nahi! Shanty Bhaiyaa! Main toh bachpan say un ko Shanty bhayya boltee hoon!" She giggled even more as Khanak laughed and repeated 'Shanty', shaking her head. "Didi WOH toh so rahay hain!Chalay na didi hum sub dance kar rahay hain!!" Dragging Khanak to the centre of the living room from where the sofas had been removed that afternoon to make place for all the dances to take place. Khanak jumped excitedly at seeing so many people celebrating her marriage. She met everyone who had come from different cities to tale part in the celebrations and felt warm at the love they all poured at her. She laughed at Megha's lame jokes, giggled at Panchi's excitement, and copied Ayesha's dance steps, who it turned out was an excellent dancer.Natasha joined Ayesha in choreographing the songs after she made sure her mother in law was out of sight and Khushboo just sat in a corner grumbling at the fact that she could not dance and at few intervals cursing the day she had decided to give Natasha the job of arranging the flowers.

Khanak danced heartily that afternoon. Ayesha turned out to be a hard task master, making sure that everyone learnt the steps within 2 hours. She took advice from Khanak how to go about it who explained animatedly all the dances and did them herself too. She felt light headed but she also felt ecstatic. She was enjoying herself as never before. She was happy as never before. She picked up her cell phone and saw that she had received a message. Reading it made her blush. It made her feel warm. It also made her feel complete.

"I love you too Shaantanu" she replied, finally sitting on the sofa, tired but content.

Khanak had begun dancing again after a 30 mintue rest in which all the girls chatted animatedly. As soon as Ayesha signaled everyone to get up for their next dancing session Khanak was the first to jump on her feet as the song "Kajra Rey" played in the background. Shaan watched his wife dancing from the top story of the apartment, hands in his pocket. He smiled and shook his head as he continued to look at Natasha doing the dandiya with her animatedly. He saw Khanak laugh, push back her hair, fix her pallu, then laugh again. He folded his hands and yawned.

"You're STILL yawning! You just slept for more than 5 hours!" Madhvi came and reprimanded him. "Shaadi hain tumhari iss ka mutlub yay nahi kay sotay raho----jao ja kar enjoy karo-----these girls have been dancing all day" she smiled warmly.

"Yea mom---I didn't sleep properly last night---buss waisay hee----" Shaan said going into thinking mode.

"Beta? Kya hua? Sub theek toh hain na?" Madhvi asked concerned, placing her hand on Shaan's cheek.

Shaan turned to look at Khanak again. She was laughing at Panchi's dance steps. "Haan Mom----" he said turning back to look at his mother. "Khanak----"

"---is SO happy touchwood! She's been having a lovely time!" Madhvi said excitedly looking down at Khanak too, interrupting Shaan.

Shaan heaved a happy sigh and smiling took his mother's hands in his. "Yea Mom. Just look at her! She's happy!----pata nahi kal raat ko kaisee---kaisee upshagun ki batein kar rahee thee---Khanak bhee na---kabhee kabhee bilkul----bilkul Burthal hojatee hain!"

Madhvi laughed. "Make sure you sleep properly tonight. Subah 8 bajay ka mahurat hain----hmmm"

Shaan nodded as Madhvi left. He shifted his attention back to Khanak dancing with Megha and Ayesha now.

The Khandelwal house looked beautiful by night. Natasha had done an excellent job with managing the lighting of the house. Khushboo had seen the brilliance of Natasha's work and hugging her hard, had cried on her shoulder. Mrs Malhotra had stepped in to move apart 'both' the pregnant sisters since too much show of emotions was bad for their respective babies. Mitul told his mom for the hundredth time that Natasha was not pregnant but his mother remained adamant. 'And how can you even THINK of going for a honeymoon when she is this condition?! No matter what doctors say I have always maintained that while being pregnant it is not safe to undergo intercourse with your partner-----" she said to which Mitul just hit his hand against his head getting the increasing feeling it was of no use to argue.

After a chaos filled day when Khanak stepped in the serene moonlight in her balcony, she felt a ringing silence; as though a thunderstorm had passed leaving an eerie quietness. Eerie but beautiful and calm. Khanak smiled and hugged herself. This time tomorrow night I will be in the arms of Shaantanu, she thought shyly. She closed her eyes and her fingers touched the lights that were attached to the railing of the terrace. She opened her eyes and saw her mehndi in the light of the bulbs and smiled again. Her heart filled with warmth at the sight. Then her ears filled with music.

It was the music of the song "Jub koi baat bigar jayay"

Khanak turned and predictably saw Shaan coming up to her and before she could even blink an eye lash Shaan had held both her hands and was looking down at her smiling. Khanak, who had been taken aback with his sudden entrance and the sound of music, just stared at him, completely forgetting to feel shy.

"Sub kay saath dance kiya---meray saath nahi karo gee?" he asked her softly holding her fingers delicately. Khanak finally looked down. She said nothing, just smiled. "May I have this dance with you?" Shaan asked softly, lightly pulling her close to him.

Khanak nodded. Her hand moved to Shaan's shoulder and his onto her waist. She heard Shaan's melodious voice fill her senses. He had turned on the recording of the song he had been practicing since days; perfecting it for this moment when he'd have Khanak in his arms dancing with him. Khanak smiled widely, her face lit up with excitement.

Jab koi baat bigad jaaye---- jab koi mushkil pad jaaye

Tum dena saath mera ----o humnawaa

"Shaantanu! Yay toh wohee gaana hain-----" Khanak began, recognizing the song that Shaan was working hard for secretly.

"Shshhh----Kuch muth bolo Khanak---- sirf mahsoos karo---" Shaan said in a whisper and pulled her close as they slowly started to move in sync with the song.

Ho chaandni jab tak raat ----deta hai har koi saath

Tum magar andheron mein -----na chhodna mera haath

Jab koi baat bigad jaaye---- jab koi mushkil pad jaaye

Tum dena saath mera ----o humnawaa

Na koi hai na koi tha -----zindage mein tumhaare siva

Tum dena saath mera -----o humnawaa

Khanak closed her eyes and moved her hands around Shaan's neck. Resting her head on his chest she moved as though in a dream. Shaan too closed his eyes and enveloped Khanak's waist warmly.

"This one is for you Mrs. Burthal----" Shaan whispered in Khanak's ear. Her head was still pressed onto Shaan's chest. "I love you----" he said. Khanak sighed in Shaan's chest. "Khanak?" Shaan said softly as the song ended.

"Hmm?" came Khanak's reply. She had not moved.

"Tum----tum khush ho na?" he asked.

Khanak looked up and Shaan saw the light in her eyes. "Buhat----Buhat khush hoon Shaantanu----Buhat khush hoon----aisa lagta hain jaisay---jaisay yay sub---ek khwab hain----itnee sari khushiyaan----ek saath----"Shaantanu main buhat stupid hoon----pata nahi kyun upshagun ki baatein karnay lagee---yay bhee nahi socha kay---kay jub hum dono saath ho toh upshagun kaisay ho sakta hain----ub sirf khushiayn ayay gee----"

Shaan smiled and moved back. Holding Khanak's face lightly with his hands, he looked at it for a while. Then he moved forward and kissed her forehead lightly. "Be on time tomorrow----don't make the dulha wait too much----" he said naughtily moving his lips to her ear. Caressing her fingers with his till they made contact no more, he left but not before giving her a wink and a small salute.

15th February 2011 07:00 AM

It couldn't have been a more perfect day for the wedding to take place. The weather was lovely; there was a cool cbreeze blowing across the gardens drifting through the open windows of the Khandelwal house, making every occupant feel fresh and energetic. The fragrance of the flowers and the perfumed candles filled everyones senses as they sought to make the wedding as perfect as the weather. There was a mild buzz in the house as soon as the sun rose which turned louder as 7 oclock approached. The wedding was to take place in the house itself. The pandit had already arrived and Madhvi, Khushboo and Dadi were already busy with getting everthing in order; from the thalees of flowers, to the varmalas, to the sweets, to the breakfast that was to be served to the guests who had risen that early to be a part of the celebrations. Khanak had woken up with a start exactly just before sunrise and had looked at the calendar in the semi darkness. It was the 15th of February. The numbers 1 and 5 and the letters 'Feb' had a significance in her life, she thought for the millionth time. She had a fleeting feeling that she had seen those numbers every day of her life, waiting for them to finally be there in front of her eyes for real, for them to exist. And today they were there. Yet something was missing. Something was definitely missing.

Natasha and Megha had already dressed up Khanak at home by 7:30 AM. Megha was a beautician by profession and she had done an excellent job in enhancing Khanak's beautiful features, her large eyes, her pouty lips and her sleaky hair that was tied in a plait, woven with jasmines. Natasha helped Khanak wear her sari, a combination of red and yellow, with a shocking pink and light green border. Khanak's jewellery was that of matching gold and peridots, completely complimenting her sari. 'You look gorgeous Khanak, and trust me I'm not saying that because I did your makeup---" Megha said to Khanak. Natasha still did not seem to be satisfied with the plates of Khanak's sari.

"Natasha---plates theek hain! Bus chor dain----" Khanak said to Natasha when she saw her screwing up her face in concentration wondering where she had gone wrong in fixing them.

"Theek hain?" Nastaha asked. "Oh well---you don't have to wear this for long anyway !" she said making Megha snort with laughter. "What!?!" Natasha asked Megha raising her eyebrows. " I'm not talking about 'that' you perv! I'm talking about later! Khanak has to CHANGE into her lahnga for the reception. God!" Megha continued to giggle. "Shaan ka pura khandaan perverted hain!" Natasha said rolling her eyes and fixing Khanak's odhani over her head. She noticed a faint blush on Khanak's cheeks and burst out laughing herself. Megha joined in and the three of them hugged.

____________________________________________________________________________________

15th February 2011 08:00 AM

Shaan waited impatiently for Khanak to arrive. He was wearing a white kurta shalwar and an offwhite sherwani. He was unusually quiet even with so many guests around him. Mitul came over and gave him a slight pat on his back. Geeta came and gave him a hard slap on his back.

'Ouch!' Shaan said looking round and making a face as soon as he saw Geeta. She looked beautiful in a yellow sari and matching earrings.

"So, getting married are we?" Geeta asked Shaan ruefully.

Shaan raised his eyebrows, amused. "Funny---I thought it was only ME who was getting married not 'WE'---YOU honey still have time--- " he sniggered.

Geeta made a face that suggested that she was chewing her tongue. "I will pretend I did not hear that---" and turning to Mitul completely ignoring Shaan she went on "So Mitul going on your honeymoon tonight are you? Where's your Mom? I heard she's baby shopping for Natasha and your soon to come bundle of joy,---" she said making Shaan chuckle at the look of exasperation on Mitul's face. "Oh my Goddd Khanak is here!!!" she suddenly screeched.

Everyone turned to look at Khanak coming down the stairs slowly with Shaan's cousins and Natasha. Shaan tilted his head to get a proper view of Khanak. If there were any words to describe divine beauty Shaan would have been saying them in his head when he saw Khanak coming down the stairs smiling broadly at everyone. Shaan got up from the mandip as Khanak came and stood before him, her eyes now lowered. Natasha handed them the varmalas .

"Shaan ko toh upar honay ki zaroorat hee nahi hain----wohh toh Khanak say waisay hee itna lamba hain----" An aunty said to the gathered guests making everyone laugh heartily. Shaan looked at Khanak with folded hands trying to make eye contact with her but she determinedly looked down, twisting the varmala in her hand.

"Khanak---put it round his neck'hurry!" a woman said close to Khanak, who she reconised as Shaan's aunt.

"Go on tip toe Khanak didi" Panchi's little voice said at a distance.

"Khanak! he's not going to bend, just fling it across his neck! That's what I did with my husband. Ub toh main un ko ungleeyaon par nachatee hoon!"

Khanak came closer. Everyone was right. Shaan WAS really tall. She lifted her head slightly to figure out an estimation of how easy or difficult it would be for her to put the varmala around his neck. She realised that never before today had she noticed that Shaan was almost a foot taller than her. Shaan continued to smile with hands folded. Khanak's eyes met Shaan's and in that instant that Shaan looked into her eyes he knew that his entire world was hers. This was where he belonged. In her eyes, in her heart, in her smile, in every breath she took. And automatically, as though an invisible force was pushing him, Shaan bent his head forward in front of Khanak, making it level with Khanak's head so that she put the varmala around his neck with ease. Many guests gasped, many cheered, and many clapped and hooted. Shaan straightened up as chants of "Dulha jhook gaya" engulfed him.

"Ub toh saari zindagi tumko iss kay saamnay jhukna paray ga Shaan----" Shaan's aunt said loudly amist cheers and discussions at Shaan's latest act.

Shaan looked into Khanak's eyes again and felt that same feeling that he had felt a moment ago. "Mujhay manzoor hain, Mausi" he said, putting the garland around Khanak's neck now not breaking eye contact with his wife.

They took the seven rounds of matrimony, each more meaningful than the other, each more significant than the previous. Khanak kept her eyes open when Shaan was putting the sinddor on her forehead just like she had when he had put it once previously when her hands had mehndi. She wanted to capture the moment that Shaan tied the new Mangal sutr around her neck and the moment when Khanak's mother did her kanyadaan. She wanted to feel the touch of Shaan's hand into hers for her entire life, and the rest of the lives that were to follow. She wanted to promise herself that she would be his wife in all the lives that were to come, to love him for eternity and more. At the end of the ceremony she felt she had got all her wishes. Everything was calm now. Everything was beautiful.
