Hi Guys😊..

I know that I am quite bad with SS/OS and what not..but you have tolerated my crazy poetry. I was kind of disturbed by the story line...so decided to pen something. Please bear with me if it seems too wordy! NOTHING COMPARES TO U.. REMORSE
Six months had gone by, six long months since Khanak had left...
Shaan went out on the balcony of his 6th floor apartment and the memories started flooding in., The same scenes played over and over in his mind like a broken record.Why was he not able to forget them. Because that had been the worst day of his life. When Khanak had begged and pleaded with him in front of every body to listen to her,and he had told her off. He had demeaned her and himself and their relationship. He had become the judge and the jury.
He had not trusted his wife, who had done so much for him. She had stood by his side, she had put him on a pedestal which he didn't deserve. Moreover, she had stood up for him in front of his father knowing that he was probably wrong and foolish. But most of all she had forgiven him for killing her husband, even though it had been accidental. And what had he done in return? Accused her of adultery! And though the instigator was his so called friend Rahul, he had practically disowned his wife and hit out at Sunny who had shown him his true face. Oh lord!! what a rotten man was he. Thank God he had finally come to his senses and had had a royal face off with Rahul. He could never forgive him nor could he forgive Sam for taking his side.
Poor Khanak, where would she be now? He missed her so terribly...it hurt!! He had never felt this angst, this pain which was gnawing his innards like a tumor. He had never felt this bad!! But hell, he had never missed someone this way before...like he missed Khanak...his darling Khanak! Her face was pasted in his mind like a memory card which could be never deleted. Why, oh why had he not spent more time with her. Why had not taken more pictures? He had just taken their relationship for granted. He had not cherished it..
Shaan banged his hand hard on the railing, wanting to hurt himself. He felt that he could never go back to Khanak to ask her forgiveness. He would not be able to face her.. Though it was not like he hadn't tried! He had, and tried hard to find her but she was not in Dhulwadi and had not been in touch with her friends. She had disappeared into thin air. He had written her several letters pouring his heart out but had never mailed them..his apology should come face to face and not in the guise of words written on a sheet of paper.
When she left Shaan's father had been particularly irritated at him for what he called his childishness. He had berated him for giving away the best thing that had happened to him. Shaan had left in a huff..but now he knew that whatever his dad had said was true and he had not wanted to hear it. He had been immature and impulsive. He had been a regular M.C.P!!
Shaan laughed wryly..wasn't he the one who always used to consider himself modern and open minded! He always had supported women's causes but when it came to his own life, he had failed miserably.
He had taken to drink, hoping to drown his sorrows in a a drunken stupor everyday but it had not worked. Duck, the only one he had kept in touch with had come to his aide and helped him quit saying that Khanak wouldn't have liked to see him this way. Instead he had urged him to find a job, a regular proper job. Shaan smiled, thinking that Khanak would be really proud of him now, seeing him, attempting to make his own life..be his own man. Why, he hadn't even told them at the company that he was Sunil Khandelwal's son for fear of being favored. He had got the job due to his own merit.. Now he was a junior team member on the design side of an advertising company and he was excited. Perhaps he could channel his creativity this way. He found that he was a workaholic!! and liked to keep late hours.... maybe because he hated to come back to an empty house where Khanak's thoughts haunted him every minute.
Shaan sat on his bed and took out his sketch book. He had started sketching in his spare time which was whenever he was alone doing nothing. He flipped through the pages, staring at the images he had drawn...Khanak's eyes..her wide, beautiful, innocent kohl rimmed eyes which were a mirror to her emotions. Her smile...that lovely, spontaneous, bright smile which could light up any body's dark life..and her lips, her full, soft, luscious......
Shaan felt something soft touch his face, a sweet caress. He smiled in his sleep as his wife nibbled his ear and walked her fingers across his torso. He did not open his eyes for he wanted her to continue her to tease and play with him thinking that he was asleep and unaware. He felt the heat rise up in him as she wove her fingers through his hair and her warm breath tickled his skin. But when he felt her silken skin touch his, he could control himself no longer, he opened his eyes, his arms stretched out... Khanak meri jaan!!...
Shaan sat up in bed, his heart pounding....only to realise that it was but a dream..She wasn't there.....he was again all alone.
My Dear Khanak,
I have done you great wrong
By falsely accusing you
By mistrusting you
By putting you down
You, who has never wished
For anything, never asked
You, who has always sought
Your happiness in mine
How can I ask your forgiveness?
How can I make up for my mistakes
How can I just.. say I'm sorry
Without sounding quite a fake
~~~~~
Sorry guys, if I bored U, please do comment😊
Thank you to all you wonderful people!! 😃 Sorry had to finish the final part so I couldn't thank you all individually but I will!!
A NEW BEGINNING....
While Khanak spent the next several days, recuperating from a really nasty sprain, Shaan got busy working hard to get her proposal approved. Besides Khanak's school, this had become his next pet project. He concluded, no matter what happened to their relationship, he would fulfill Khanak's dreams for they had now become his own.
In order to put Khanak's mind at ease Shaan got in the habit of sending her text messages with updates on the project. In the beginning they were one liners and to the point...
'Its on my boss's desk.' ' should have an answer by am.'....
Then when he got replies, such as....' Thank you!, Don't work too hard.' ' Did you eat well today?'...he got bolder and started sending them more often, adding subtle subtexts,..
' Boss said that there should be no problem! Btw what did you put in those sandwiches, that made them so delish?'
'Just tomatoes and cucumbers.?..Nah! You didn't tell me the secret ingredient.'
Khanak blushed...,
' Pyaar manga hai tumhi se..na inkaar karo., what a beautiful song, they are playing it on the radio..'
Then one saturday morning, he woke her up with this message..' Khanak, will you come to my apartment tonight? I want to tell you something..'
Khanak, who had been wondering when he would ask, replied right away, ' Yes, I will..'
~~~~~~~~~~

When Khanak told Tashu about Shaan's invite and that she had accepted it, she gave her a big hug: You are two of my most favorite people in the world, and I have been fervently wishing for this day. It'll turn out right..I know it in my heart!

Khanak hoped so too, now that he had asked her, she couldn't bear wait till evening when he was going to come and pick her up.

She wondered about what to wear and decided on a simple mauve transparent sari and a demure satin mauve blouse with cap sleeves which tied with a bow in the back. To compliment the sari Tashu insisted her on wearing a pair of pretty pinkish mauve pearl earrings and a bracelet.

When Shaan came to pick her up, he stood for some time staring at the simply elegant picture of beauty she presented. You look just perfect!! he said, as Khanak looked shyly at him, after all it was their first date.

Shaan showed Khanak around his one bedroom apartment, his eyes shining with undisguised pride...

Khanak, ye hai mera chota sa ghar hai...jiska rent mein khud apni kamai se deta hoon!! Bahut chota hai, magar mera hai....kaisa laga?

Khanak looking around examining every detail, every nook, every corner, couldn't help but feel his happiness and excitement rub off on her. She started imagining herself in the kitchen cooking Shaan's favorite dishes on the range, taking juice and milk out of the refrigerator, and laying out the table for dinner. She imagined herself and Shaan in companionable silence admiring the night cityscape from the small balcony or sitting side by side on the couch watching TV or reading a book or just talking about their day.

He then showed her the bedroom which was small but cozy and inviting with a bed, big enough for the two of them and small enough for...., Khanak blushed and turned away, tryng to distract herself from the images which were forming in her brain..., when she saw the familiar Thakurji's murti, the one in front of which Khanak had spent countless hours praying. She looked gratefully at Shaan who acknowledged it with a nod and a smile, I couldn't leave him all alone in my room, could I?

Ab tum chup chaap baitho Khanak...!

Shaan pulled back a chair at the table for Khanak, indicating for her to sit. While she waited, he laid the table out perfectly with shiny new plates and silver ware and then brought out several covered dishes. Finally he brought 3 tall red candles and placed them on the crystal candle stands in the middle of the table. He whipped out a cigarette lighter from his pocket, Nahin Khanak, I don't smoke! and lit the candles. Afer turning off the overhead lights and he went to the Music System and started playing some soft old romantic music. Mein jaanta hoon ke tumhein bhi yeh bahut pasand hai,..he said softly, his voice had acquired that husky, seductive tone, which was started spinning an inescapable web around Khanak.

As Khanak stared at Shaan bemused, he began serving her a variety of fragrant dishes, with running commentary on the side...

Yeh hai Kachumber! With carrots and cucumber, aur ye thepala. Here is some moong ki daal with Kadhi and aloo gobhi ki sabzi. Khanak..don't mind huh, mujhe sab ko phir garam karna pada, pehle se bana ke rakha tha! Except the thepla of course, aur sab kuch meine banaya hai..apne haathon se! You know mein Gujarati khana banana accha seekh gaya hoon, Hari bha used to come sometimes to teach me! But today is my finals, because you are the ultimate expert!! Bolo jaldi se, taste karo, kaho kaisa laga?!!..

Khanak couldn't believe her eyes, looking at the spread before her, that Shaan had cooked everything just for her. Her heart was overflowing with affection for him and all she wanted to do now was to simply hug him tight and tell him how much she loved him. She controlled herself with difficulty and started sampling all the dishes on her plate, surprisingly everything was very good, which reminded her that she was hungry and she started eating ravenously. Shaan pleased no end at her response, also started eating and they had a quiet meal together.

Later Khanak helped Shaan clear the dishes and complimented him on his cooking. Aap sach bahut accha khana bana lete hain, will you invite me again?

Shaan turned to find her looking wistfully at him, there was no guile or tease in those beautiful eyes. There just was a sincere request, an unspoken question...

Shaan beta, the time has come, and it is now....

Shaan took both of Khanak's hands in his and gently seated her on the sofa and knelt down in front of her. He took a deep breath and looking directly into her eyes said:

Khanak, tum bahut acchi ho. You are not only a wonderful person, but an even more amazing wife. Very few people in the world are fortunate to have a life partner like you. I was one of them...but I didn't realise that. I was hateful and cruel in the beginning though you sacrificed a lot more when you rescued me. Then later when I started to enjoy your company, I was still selfish like a spoilt brat, thinking of My needs and wants only, never once did I ask you about your dreams and desires. Yet, you bore everything in silence, and never hinted at your pain. Then, when the time came for my love for you to be tested, I like a petulant child threw you away like a damaged toy, never once did I think that I had blinkers on and it was My mind that was playing games with me and you my darling were completely innocent!

Khanak, you did right by leaving me then..never ever blame yourself for that. Agar tum nahin jaati, then I would have never come to terms with your importance in my life. I would have gone on living my usual useless zindagi which would have been a terrible waste....

Shaan then gripped Khanak's hands more firmly, as she looked at him expectantly, both of their eyes welling up..,his voice broke as he said, Magar ab Khanak, mein badal gaya hoon. Mein woh puraana Shaan nahin raha! I have grown up, and I have changed for the better. Dekho!..Looking around the apartment..yeh sab... I have become responsible and have stood on my own 2 feet for the past 4 months. Mein jhoot nahin bol raha hoon, seriously meine daddy se koi paise nahin liye, aur you'll be happy to hear that Dad is proud of me, his nalayak son!! Aur.., sabse badi baat yeh hai ke, I am so sorry..I know that it is too easy to say that word; but I truly am, that I did what I did to you, meine tumhare astitva ko chot pahunchaya. Please Khanak, Mujhe ek baar maaf kardo, sirf ek baar! Mein promise karta hoon, cross my heart, mein tumhe phir kabhi nahin rulaonga! Please Khanak?...

Shaan's tears flowed freely as he as looked pleadingly at Khanak. She eagerly nodded, seeing the desperation on his face, which conveyed more than any words ever could.

Sach??!!

Khanak smiled and nodded again, as she couldn't trust her voice. Shaan smiled joyously and kissing Khanak's hands said: Khanak!! Will you marry me? Kya tum mujhse shaadi karogi??..

When Khanak looked puzzled, Shaan said, Khanak, I know that you'll say that we are already married, but woh shaadi ek samjhauta tha..! I want this day to be the first day of our new life together, where there is no force or coercion, just love and trust. Please say that you'll marry me!!

Khanak who felt touched beyond words, said...Yes! and I will be the luckiest woman on earth!!

Shaan took a ring off his little finger and gently slipped it on Khanak's ring finger. It fit perfectly, a simple gold band with 3 small diamonds on the top. Khanak had seen Shaan wearing it before but had never got around to asking about it..she looked at it curiously.

Khanak, this was my Naani ma's ring which she gave me just before she died and I have worn it ever since, in her memory. But now, I give it to you, as a symbol of my love for you..for our new memories together. I'm sure Naani ma will approve!

Yes, I'm sure she will...

Khanak gently held Shaan's face in her hands and kissed him on the forehead, then threw her arms around his neck and proceeded to hug him tight, Oh Shantanu!! I LOVE YOU!!

Shaan turned her face toward his, and dropped kisses as light as a feather on her eyes, her cheeks, her throat...Khanak could feel the blood rush to her face and her pulse quicken, as he caressed her shoulder with his lips. All the passion and memories which they had kept bottled up for so long erupted to the surface. Their lips met hungrily as they tried to quench their thirst just like the parched earth soaks up the rain after a long dry spell. Their bodies struggled to eliminate any remaining distance between them, trying to mould into one another, like a hand in a fitted glove.

Shaan, who was on the verge of losing all rational thought, earnestly probed Khanak's face and found it mirroring his own. He gently lifted her up and carried her to the bed, Welcome Home, Mrs Khanak Shantanu Khandelwal!

Khanak, finally my dreams are being realised

I was longing to lay myself by your side

Please, close your eyes

Lose yourself in the moment

And let me love you...forever!

Phew! Its done..do comment please!!!😃
love, Simi

Thanks all again, this is the penultimate part....😃

Part 5- Actions Speak Louder

Shaan returned to his office after leaving Khanak in the conference room. He was feeling very positive about the future seeing that she had not rejected him outright, when he had given her the rose and card. One of his colleagues who attended the meeting, came into his office and started showering praises on Khanak. Yaar, what a jewel huh... She had me under her spell from the get go! Such a wonderful mix of beauty and brains. Do you know if she's single and available? Maybe, I could try to pataofy her..and bring her home. After a long, long time have I met a girl who I want to wed rather than bed!

Shaan who was having trouble controlling his rage thought that if this guy wasn't his colleague he would have given him a sound thrashing, how dare he talk about his wife that way in front of him or for that matter any girl: First of all as far as I know she is not available and even if she was I'm sure she would not look at you twice, leave alone consider you as a potential husband. And please in the future learn to respect women and get out of my offfice before I throw you out!

The guy quickly exited when he saw that Shaan meant business. Meine kya bol diya ke woh itna bhadhak utha..

Later Shaan went back to his boss's office to report on the presentation. Without trying to sound biased or partal he told him that though the project sounded very impressive, it lacked a few key details.

At this Mr S. looked at him in surprise. He had expected Shaan to heap accolades and appreciation on Ms Khanak who obviously was his friend, and recommend that they go ahead with the project. It pleased him that Shaan was not only hard working but was also honest and had a savvy knack for business.

Mr S: Ok, then what do you suggest my boy? Should we just hold off till she provides us with more data?.

Shaan : No Sir, my suggestion was that we should send our representative to the field, I mean Dhulwadi, to gather those details, because as the chief investors it is our prerogative to know the ins and outs of any venture we fund.

Mr S smiled: I understand what you are getting at my son, a very good thought..for a while there you had me wondering. So why don't you set up this field trip with Ms Khanak, since you already know her well and also have a decent background on the project too. Let's say that I delegate you to see it through.., what do you think?

Shaan was thrilled that his boss had fallen for his little trick: Sir, I can't express how grateful I am to be given this opportunity, I assure you that you won't be disappointed.

Shaan left overjoyed, thinking that God must indeed want him to be reunited with Khanak, for it seemed like things seemed to be moving along like clockwork. But dealing with Khanak would be entirely different matter.

Shaan called Tashu that evening to tell his news, when she said coyly: Hai Shaan, looks like you have become maahir ( expert), in the art of seduction. Ever since Khanak came back home, she has been sitting in her bedroom listening to old romantic Hindi songs. I have tried to distract her a few times but she seems lost in a trance., did you put her under a spell or what?

Shaan laughed happy that Khanak had not pooh poohed his gift: I wish..Tashu, I really wish that I had a magic wand but no, this time I don't want to rush or force her. I don't want to win her by deceit. I want her to realise that I'm a changed man and that I really am sorry for what I did.

Tashu: Decent thoughts indeed, you've really grown up pal. Okay tell me quick if you have any plans b'coz I have a date with Anand tonight. Do you want me to bring Khanak and make it a foursome?

Shaan: No dear, I don't want to become a kabab mein haddi! Besides its important for you to spend time alone with him, something that I never gave importance to with Khanak. Please, can you tell her to get ready tomorrow to go to Dhulwadi with a company rep., since Mr. S would like to get a clear picture of the entire deal. and guess what..

Tashu: OMG, Shaan., the rep is You!! How clever!! Don't tell me that you were the one who suggested it!

Shaan: I did, Tashu, and Mr S. lapped it up! He has even made me incharge of the project, go figure!..

Tashu: Thats wonderful news..looks like the storm has let up and its going to be sunshine all the way ahead for you both! I'll tell her Shaan, just be sure to take it easy!

Shaan: I will Tashu..., have a great time tonight and tell Anand, what a lucky man he is!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following day, Shaan got ready bright and early for he did not want Khanak to feel that he hadn't got rid of his old bad habits but more than anything he did not want to keep her waiting. He got into his old white jeep and parked in Tashu's apartment complex out of site from the main door and waited for Khanak to show up. After a few minutes, Khanak came down the stairs looking around as if searching for someone. She was looking fresh, elegant and simply beautiful in a starched orange and green cotton saree with her hair tied up in a ponytail. Shaan picked up some courage and sauntered up to her..,
Shaan: At your service, ma'am!
Khanak surprised: Aap? aap yahaan kya kar rahe hain?..still looking around, searching for somebody else..
Shaan: Main hoon Mr Sabharwal ke company ka rep jiske saath aapko aaj Dhulwadi jaana hai..
Khanak confused and obviously unprepared: Magar, magar...aap? Shayad koi galti..
Shaan not wanting her to change her mind: Mr S ne kisi aur ko pehle appoint kiya tha, but at the last moment woh ja nahin saka and usne mujhse poocha aur meine haan kar diya, but if you don't want to come with me I can call somebody else..pata nahin kaun free hoga..hmm
Khanak shook her head telling herself that she can do it: Nahin, theek hai, its ok, I'll come with you!..
Shaan wanted to rub his hands in glee but controlled the urge: Okay lets go then, wahan jane ke liye 3-4 ghante lag jaayenge..
Khanak walked with him and saw his jeep which reminded her about the last time he had come in it to get her: Lekin, I have a few ground rules..
Shaan stopped surprised: Rules?..
Khanak sternly: Haan, nahin to mein aapke saath nahin aaoongi! First..aap gaana nahin gaayenge, doosra..aap mera haath nahin pakdenge, third..you won't make small talk and fourth..as soon as our work is done we'll head right back!..
Shaan sighed seeing the demise of most of his plans: Okay Masterni jee, ab aap jo bhi kahaengi, humein woh manzoor hoga!...and bent his head clasping his hands in a sign of submission before her.
Khanak: What kya kaha..Masterni!?
Shaan smiling looked at her in mock fear: Haan tum is saree mein bilkul school ki koi masterni lag rahi ho, magar bahut acchi bhi lag rahi ho..
Khanak looked away blushing, thinking that Shaan was not looking any less handsome than usual, dressed casually in his staple blue jeans and white cotton shirt...Ok, chalo magar mujhe masternee phir mat bulaana!
So they both got into the jeep and embarked on this journey together....Khanak especially needed to get answers to several questions which had been bothering her ever since she had met Shaan in the party, she couldn't run away from them forever...
They were two lovers
Pretending to be strangers
Eager to end the status quo
But still unsure and hesitant
Both checking out the other
One bolder quite clear of his intentions
The other more subtle,
But no less curious
They were testing the waters
See if they could make it through
Fall in love again
For the very last time ??...................
Let's try to break the ice.......
After a couple of hours, Shaan who hadn't said a word to Khanak till then, stopped the car near a grove of trees and held up his pinky.When Khanak saw this universal sign of nature's call she almost couldn't keep her amusement in check..Kya Shaan aap bhi na! Meine aapko gaana gaane se mana kiya tha, bolne se nahin!..
Shaan hurried into the grove, with Khanak amused voice shouting behind him: Be careful, don't step on any sticks, they may turn out to be snakes!!!....
When Shaan came back he saw Khanak eating a sandwich from her lunch box, which reminded him that he was very hungry for he had had only a banana for breakfast. He cursed himself for not being practical and packing something to eat along the way. Khanak who could gather what Shaan was feeling, offered a sandwich to him, when he refused she said in a teasing manner: Sandwich kha lijiye nahin to aap Behosh ho jayenge, phir humein Dhulwadi kaun le jayega?..
Shaan glared at her: Mein pehla jaisa Shaan nahin raha, jise tum Nazzuk kehti thi..mein khali pet reh loonga!.
Khanak stopped laughing and recalled Tashu saying that Shaan probably didn't eat regular meals everyday, she felt a tinge of remorse, thinking that her leaving had a lot to do with this.., but then she had been compelled to leave and she had done the right thing..
Please..Pleaz? Kha lijiye, nahin to mein neeche utar jaoongi aur Dhulwadi chal ke chali jaoongi!!...
OMG!! You girls, tumhare nakhre! Accha mein kha leta hoon, khush?...
Khanak smiled and handed him a sandwich and looked on happily as he gobbled it down in a jiffy, Shaan smiled.., glad that Khanak was finally feeling relaxed in his presence.
They drove on, and Shaan taking advantage of Khanak's relaxed mood tried to get her to open up to him: Khanak.., tum ne itna sab kaise kiya?Itni jaldi English seekhna aur ek cottage industry shuru karna koi small achievement nahin hai..
Shaan, yeh sab meine akele nahin kiya, Tashu aur Anand ke bina kuch nahin hota.
Tashu, Anand? kaise?
Haan, mein aap ko chod kar bilkul toot gayi thi, mein Dhulwadi nahin jaana chati thi, unse mein kya kehti? Tashu ne mujhe apne ghar mein aasra diya aur padhne ke liye encourage kiya.. us ne kaha ki isse mujh mein atma vishwas ki bhawna jaage gi. I started taking classes, and ghar mein Tashu gave me lessons on the computer. Then when Anand came, he asked me to visit his office where he took me around and gave me some basics on how a business is run, profit, loss etc., you know without both of them I'd have been nowhere..
(And I wouldn't have been able to find you,) Shaan thought: Wow, Khanak, never ever think low of yourself., only motivated people can achieve what you have achieved in such a short time and I'm very proud of you! and grateful to Tashu and Anand, I have to thank them properly when I get back.
Khanak looked at him, thinking how much he had changed, all this time he had not said even a single thing about himself, not a word of self praise, very unlike the old flamboyant Shaan.
When they reached Dhulwadi, Shaan had not yet parked the vehicle that Khanak jumped out and stood in the middle of the street, closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, a wide smile lighting up her face. That smile reminded Shaan of the innocent, carefree girl who he had first met here, who had instantly had occupied a place in his heart against his will. Where had that smile disappeared? Shaan realised that no matter how hard she tried Khanak could never forget her home town, and he had errored in keeping her away for so long...It won't happen again!
While Shaan wanted to do some ' Peit Pooja,' Khanak wanted to get to work right away, saying that it was the best time to catch Phulwa behen, who according to Khanak was the unofficial leader and mentor to the village women, and she would be the one who could make their project successful. They went to her mud and brick house, where they were greeted as old long lost friends and treated with large glasses of buttermilk. Khanak started discussing the details with Phulwa behen while Shaan examined the colorful pieces of craftwork which the village women had made including baskets, purses with beadwork, elaborately embroidered linen, scarves and beautiful ornate jewellery. He inquired about how much the women made from the sales of their handiwork and was surprised to find that they barely made pittance and if they did most of it had to be given to the middlemen. Shaan realised that Khanak's efforts would help them sell their products directly to the customers mostly overseas and middlemen would be completely eliminated. He regarded Khanak with renewed admiration and silently thanked her for helping him step beyond the walls that he had erected around him.
Shaan came out of the house and waited for Khanak to finish her discussions with Phulwa behen. He was satisfied as to the worthiness of the project and had already decided to tell his boss so. As he waited, a young girl about 10-11 yrs old came running to him with a shy smile on her face and quickly thrust at him some flowers and a slate and ran away as fast as she had come. Shaan examined the slate and saw that she had written 'Dhanyawad Shantanu bha' on it, and signed it 'Aapki choti behen Lajjo'. He looked around for her and felt tears welling up in his eyes.... He couldn't find her but saw a few of the village women standing at a distance and smiling gratefully at him. He felt that this was probably one of the happiest days in his life..
Dear Khanak,
You have taught me so much
I will be ever grateful for
The world is very big
And I'm a very small piece of it
Life would be more meaningful
If we learn to be a little humble
For there is a lot more happiness
In giving rather than in receiving...
Thank you, yours Shaan
Thanks to everybody for the amazing response to the first part..I hope that I can keep up!!😃 Part 2: GIVE HOPE A CHANCE
The alarm rings announcing 6 am.
Shaan tosses over in bed. Its time to wake up. There are dark circles around his eyes, he has hardly slept all night. For whenever his eyes close he starts dreaming about Khanak, and that she was back.. then he wakes up to find that it was what it was..just a dream!! His subconscious was playing games with him. He wouldn't be able to rest in peace till he found her and begged her forgiveness. He just didn't know how to go about it..perhaps he should go to Dhulwadi again?
I have never in my life
Felt more alone than I do now
Although I claim dominions over all I see
It means nothing to me
There are no victories
In all our histories, without love
So true....thought Shaan as he listened to the strains of one of his favorite songs in the car on the way to work.. How was Sting able to express the universal truth so well? Perhaps he too had been alone once...and had felt incomplete just like him. The best compositions seem to have been written by people who have been denied or lost something. Perhaps he should try his hand at writing? ..maybe he'll hit a goldmine..he chuckled..
The day went by quickly as Shaan immersed himself in his work. His boss was impressed by his dedication and patted him on his back telling him that he would go far. Shaan smiled at this and said: Thank you sir, but this is just a small baby step forward.There is still a lot that I need to do, that I need to prove... his eyes looking into the distance. His boss nodded, wondering what this talented, good looking young man lacked in his life that had made him take it so seriously? Most young men his age were out and about partying, having fun, living off their rich parents, while he seemed to be only interested in work and work alone. How he wished that his son could take a leaf from his book.
Later that day when Shaan was taking a breather in his cubicle, he heard a knock on his computer screen. It was Duck on IM! Hey Shaan...mere bhai, kya yaar dikhai nahin dete??
Sh: Sorry yaar, too busy with work and guess what.. am enjoying it!!
Duck: And unlike me you are good at it!! Haha!! Me , whatever I touch turns to goo! I mean a migraine for which there is no dava!!
Shaan burst out laughing...Oh yaar! You always make me laugh..I missed you so much, thanks for checking on me though I really don't deserve it!
Duck: No man, main bhi tumhe bahut miss karta hoon, is liye bulaya. I know since Khanak bhabhi left you have become a sadhu. But sometimes mere cafe mein aakar mere customers ko entertain to karna..or did you stop singing too??
Shaan: No yaar, how can I do that? I just sing for myself now..its just a hobby. As for coming to your cafe..I can come there only with Khanak..till then..
Duck: Till then..aur kab aayega woh din? Tumne to bhabhi ko dhoondna bhi chod diya hai.
Shaan: No Duck...nahin choda..sirf delay kar raha hoon, for this time when I meet her I want to be able to hold my head up high and be able to answer all her questions, and that time will come soon! I have a feeling..
Duck: Kya..are you seeing an astrologer? Is he good? Mujhe bhi mila de na yaar..I want to know meri Khanak kab aayegi?
Shaan laughing again: No there's only one Khanak and she's mine..but I'm sure God has made a female specimen of the species for you too...and she's waiting in the psychiatrist's office!!..
Just then Shaan's cell phone rang and he saw that it was Natasha calling..Duck I'll call you later..It's Tashu phone..Bye!
Shaan was curious about Tashu's call for she hadn't contacted him in over 3 months: Hi Tashu..long time no hear?
Tashu: Why Shaan, do your friends have to call you first now..in the past you were the one who was ringing me up all time for this or that..and now looks like you don't need me anymore!..
Shaan:(Thinking.. Yes, but I do need somebody else.) Sorry, Tashu..its just that I get so busy with work and when I get home, I am so drained..
Tashu: OMG!! Who am I talking to? Is it a misconnection? Shaan am I really hearing you say that you are working so hard that you have no time for your friends? It's really hard to believe..you have changed a lot since Khanak left..what are trying to prove Shaan?
Shaan: stop saying that Tashu, why does everybody harp on that all the time? This change was long overdue and it just happened now..thats all!
Tashu: I'm sorry Shaan..its just that you're so different now, it worries me sometimes. Anyway, I almost forgot the reason why I called..I'm getting engaged!
Shaan: What? To whom? somebody I know?? Why?
Tashu: Why not? I have a life too and you are not the only man in the world! Remember the guy I told you about, the one I met while I was working in Singapore?
Shaan: Yes, I do recall you being awfully animated when you talked about him, what was his name..eh Anand..right?
Tashu: Thank God, am impressed..you were listening!! yes, Anand..he proposed and I accepted..
Shaan:Just like that..is he the guy for you?
Tashu: There was a time when I thought that you were the guy for me and I was wrong..I was more of a confidant, a safehouse.. And how long do you expect me to pine for you..no Shaan, I've moved on and Anand is a beautiful guy..in fact I am the lucky one. I wanted to invite you to our engagement party tomorrow.
Shaan: Well, I don't think that would be right, it won't be nice to start a relationship on a sour note..
Tashu: Oh no, Shaan! Anand knows everything about you and us, in fact it was his idea to invite you. Besides, I want you to meet somebody..
Shaan: Tashu! You know that I very much still belong to Khanak? So just forget about hitching me up with somebody else..!
Tashu: Shaan, I know that, and I admit it makes me a little jealous of Khanak, and its not what you think! Please do come, for my sake?... Tomorrow at 7 at the Peak's Lounge..
Khanak my dear,
You found me
Wandering in life's sea
You righted my ship
And set me free
I have always been
about me and myself
Never you or us
Never ourselves
Have I repented
Regretted enough
Or is it too late
To win back your trust
Thanks to all the wonderful ppl who read my OS which seems to have turned into an SS..😆 but hopefully not more than 5 parts!!😉 Hope you like part 3.
Part 3...JAB WE MET AGAIN
Shaan was late for the party.. he was still not sure whether he should go. Since Khanak had left, he had stopped going out socially and had refused many invites from hopeful female colleagues. He had made it clear that he was not available.
His cell phone rang..it was Tashu calling: What happened Shaan, when are you planning to get here? Anand has been eager to meet you!
Shaan: Sorry Tashu..do I really have to come? Can't I meet him some other time, say over lunch or coffee tomorrow?
Tashu: What's happened to you Shaan, you were never like this before..and no you have to come right now, or I'll never talk to you again!
Shaan: Oh no Tashu! That won't do at all! I don't want to lose you too..okay I'll come but go ahead with the ceremony and such. Don't wait for me..
Tashu: Just get yourself here Shaan!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Shaan stood at the entrance of the lounge, and waited almost 10 minutes before Tashu spotted him and grabbed his arm. She was looking gorgeous in a sequined black sari and very happy. Shaan was very relieved to see her like this because he had been worried that she had agreed to marry this Anand guy on the rebound. Tashu pulled him along and stood him in front of a tall, slim built man with wavy hair who looked at him with a twinkling eyes and a curious smile.

Tashu: Shaan, this is Anand my fiance and Anand this is Shaan, my old flame!

On hearing this, Shaan glanced in apprehension at Tashu and was surprised to see her looking at Anand with a broad smile on her face.

Anand who apparently was taking it all in stride reached for Shaan's and shook it hard saying: Tashu, you didn't tell me that he was a looker! If I were you, I'd have never let him go!

Tashu, winking at Anand: Oh! then I would have never met you, my love..besides his heart was already taken..

Shaan realised that the couple were having fun at his expense and relaxed. He had immediately taken to Anand with his easy smile and he could clearly see that they were deeply in love with each other.

Tashu: So Shaan do you approve of my Prince charming?...Why don't I leave you boys to get to know each other while I pretend to be the good hostess, or you know we may end up having no guests at the wedding!! Which is not really a bad idea..what say my White Chocolate Mocha..she said winking at Anand, who winked right back and pecked her on the cheek.

Shaan couldn't help but feel a little envious watching the easy banter between the charming couple, and wished again for the nth time that Khanak had not left. Anand took his arm and steered him towards the well lit bar and ordered a Mojito for himself and sparkling water for Shaan. Shaan looked at him surprised, and Anand grinned at him..My dear Shaan, I probably know you better than yourself, Tashu has told me everything about you, I hope you don't mind.

Shaan smiling: Of course, I don't mind..Tashu has been and always will be someone I have trusted with the most intimate details of my life because she's never been judgemental and always given me good advice. And now you are part of her life, and I must say that I certainly like what I see!!

Anand wiped his brow in mock relief: Phew!!...was getting worried there for a moment!But before you ask me the burning question....let me tell you about myself..my entire life can be summarised in 3, no 4 sentences! I am the CTO ( Chief Tech officer), of a multinational high tech company so you'll be correct to assume that my social life is for the birds. I'm an only son who lives with his widower father in Singapore. I met Natasha in a coffee shop and fell in love at first sight when she lectured me for a full half hour on the evils of taking other people's property just because our coffees got swapped by error. After that I made a point of relentlessly pursuing her, until she got vexed and agreed to spend the rest of her life with me! And now, here we are..as easy as that.

Shaan smiled: You are one per...

Khanak....just Khanak...!

Wha..at???

A stunned Shaan whipped around in his seat, his eyes started to spontaneously scan the dimly lit room of their own accord, searching for the source of that familiar voice. Was it possible., could she be here?..

How do you do?..I am well, Thank you..

Shaan's mouth went dry as he heard that unmistakable, musical voice again and saw that it was coming from across the room where a slim figure clad in a white sari was standing with her back toward him, intent in conversation with a heavy set man...Blast him!! Yes, it was her, his Khanak..he would know her anywhere! At last!! But what was she doing here and who was she talking to?

A myriad thoughts raced through Shaan's mind as he scrutinised the face of the man who seemed to be standing too close to Khanak, bending his face to her, listening very carefully. What??..It was his boss, Mr Sabharwal!! What the hell was he doing here with her..could he be her date?? No, that wasn't possible..didn't she greet him as if she did not know him? But anyway what was he doing standing so close to her.., even though they were estranged, she was still his wife, the only difference now was that now she was speaking in near perfect English!!

Shaan's heart was beating so hard that it felt like it would pop right out of his rib cage! All he wanted to do right now was grab that slim waist, turn her around and demand that she return back with him..and if she refused, he would just carry her out by force!! He got up from his seat when he saw Tashu walk up to Khanak and put her arm on her shoulder and hug her while saying something to her. She seemed to be acting in a very friendly manner...had she known all along Khanak's whereabouts and hadn't told him?

Shaan looked at Anand in askance, who just shrugged his shoulders and smiled: What are waiting for Shaan, I can see the desperation in your face..go ahead and stake your claim.

Shaan whose legs had turned to lead: But what if she refuses to even acknowledge me, after all it was I who had pushed her away..

Anand: You mean like the song..it's been 6 long months, do you still want me??.. Well Shaan, how would know until you talk to her,....after all, she loved you too, right??

Shaan: Yes, very much..more than I deserved to be loved..

So saying, nervously walked up to the small group, feeling like he was treading on egg shells, one wrong step, then all would be lost.

Tashu spotted him first and waved: Oh Shaan, come here, let me introduce you to Mr Sabharwal!

Khanak caught unawares, turned to look at him and then quickly looked away feeling all flustered thinking...Of course, Tashu would have invited Shaantanu to one of the most important days in her life!!..Silly me, why did I have to come?

Shaan smiled distractedly, his eyes on Khanak: How do you do Mr Sabharwal? Didn't expect to meet you here..Tashu Mr Sabharwal's my boss..

Mr S shaking Shaan's hand: Nice to meet you my boy..I was just leaving. I'm so happy to be invited Natasha..its so nice to meet young people like Miss Khanak here who wants to work for the greater good! All the best, Ms Khanak, I'll be happy to help you in your efforts any way I can, in fact I'll be honored! Right Shaan?... he walked away.

Shaan nodded puzzled and looked at Khanak with new eyes. What had she done to impress his boss? and how had she learned to speak such impeccable English?..

Tashu: Khanak has been working 24/7 Shaan, you'll be amazed by what she has accomplished in these past few months..she has been educating herself and aspires to start a micro finance cottage industry in Dhulwadi for the betterment of it's very talented women..and she has been tirelessly trying to gather support for her project....that's where Mr Sabharwal comes in..

While Shaan was trying hard to absorb all this amazing information, Khanak was secretly trying to absorb him. Finding him in such close proximity again after such a long time, was wrecking havoc to her composure. He had changed..he had lost weight, his favorite sport jacket was sitting a little loose on his shoulders, he seemed unaware of it, and this was unusual of the old Shaan who would never go out if he was not completely satisfied with the way he looked. His face was thinner, making his cheek bones more prominent.., and there were dark circles under his eyes, but somehow it suited him, this lean, hungry look. And what was that..stubble? He was letting himself go! BURTHAL!. Was Haribha not feeding him right? Was he not getting enough sleep...or was he laying awake thinking of her?..Nahh! Then when she heard that deep, breathy, honey smooth voice again..she longed it to say Khanak....Khanak..just like old times..

KHANAK!! Stop it..stop behaving like an idiot!! Remember this is the man who pointed a finger at your Integrity..who accused you of betrayal when you had done nothing at all!! Look at him, he probably doesn't miss you even..he is likely out partying every night, those dark circles are evidence enough! Hummph...Mr Khandelwal! I can survive without you very well, very well indeed!!..

Done with the introspection, Khanak glared at Shaan, who was looking at her with frank admiration, proud that his wife had not broken down, instead had stepped out on her own..and looks like there was no stopping her!!.. and she was looking like an angel in that shiny white sari...wasn't it the one she had worn on the day he had got drunk and made a fool of himself?..

Shaan opened his mouth to felicitate her but was taken aback, when he saw the anger in her eyes... he could only say ..Hi Khanak.., tum aaj bahut acchi lag rahi ho!..

Khanak couldn't help blushing.... He still had the power to make her go weak in the knees when he talked like that..as if she was the only girl in the room!

Shaan saw the effect of his words on her and felt that perhaps there was still some hope..that she'll hear him out? But as he was willing his mind to try to put his thoughts to words..., Khanak's phone rang and she excused herself and walked away.

Tashu and Shaan stood there for a long time waiting for her but she did not return. Shaan was sorely disappointed. Tashu assured him that she would try to speak to Khanak..and persuade her to meet with him soon.

Shaan left feeling that at least he had taken the first step towards reconciliation, ..however insignificant it might be, it was enough to keep him hoping.

Darling Khanak!

When I saw you today

My heart stopped

You looked more beautiful

Than even in my wildest dreams.........is that possible?

I was so proud

When I heard you speak today

But would you mind

Talking the same old with me........just once in a while?

~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry its super long😉 Please comment..good or not.
Thanks everybody for liking pt 3, here's pt 4...😊
HOPE FLOATS..........
Tashu rushed home worried about Khanak, and hoping that she would be okay..after all seeing Shaan after such a long time was a major shock to the system.
She found Khanak sitting on the side of her bed in her room, softly weeping. Heaving a sigh of relief knowing that she was safe, Tashu rushed to her side and said Khanak, kya hua, tum ro rahi ho.., why did you come away, Shaan was desperate to speak with you.
Khanak turned a distressed face towards her: Tashu, that is what I was afraid of. When I saw him today, I..all the memories came flooding back..I could barely control myself. I was afraid that if he said one word, I would have gone right back with him forgetting everything he had said and done to me.Tashu..why am I so weak? Why after all this time can't my mind control how my heart feels? Why didn't you warn me Tashu?
Tashu: My dear Khanak you are not weak..love is strong!! If I had warned you Khanak, you would have refused to come. I knew so, even though things have changed so much, you would have refused to face your demons. But I didn't want that for you or for Shaan who also didn't know that you would be there.
Tashu sidled upto Khanak and put her arm around her shoulder and gave her a little hug: Khanak, a lot of time has passed since you separated. And just like you, Shaan too has changed a lot.. When you left he broke down, he didn't expect it. He felt like a rudderless boat being tossed about in the stormy sea..you had been his sail and his oar, and he hadn't realised how much he depended on you. He started drinking..Khanak looked at her with a look of concern mixed with disbelief..
Tashu nodded: Yes, Khanak..he became a regular Devdas, but then Duck..you know Duck( he's the only one of the old gang that he talks to any more,) told him that you wouldn't have liked to see him that way, so he stopped! See Khanak, he still cared.., and on our urging he even applied for this job and has been working for Mr Sabharwal's advertising firm for the last 4 months! Did you ever expect our old Shaan( you don't mind me calling him our Shaan, ) to have a steady mind, leave alone a job!! Khanak he has really changed..
Khanak ( with a thoughtful look,): Yes, Meinen nahin socha tha that he'd change so much., but what about those dark circles, and he looks thinner..I bet that he has been partying most of the nights away..
Tashu laughed shaking her head: My dear, he is not. You know, he left home a month after you left! He quarreled big time with his Dad who was really angry that he had doubted you and demanded that he apologised right away, and brought you home. Shaan did look for you,( I didn't tell him your whereabouts as you requested,) when he didn't find you he started to drink which riled his father even more, ..so Shaan left and now is living in an apartment. So no home cooked food for our Rajkumar..I bet he survives on Pizzas and TV dinners.
Khanak started to sob, tears streamed down her face: Oh, what have I done? Poor Shaan..he went through so much for me?...
Tashu smiling, excited: So you see Khanak, you still care for him and love him just like he does. You are meant to be together!! Please do say yes, it'll be the greatest wedding gift for Anand and me to have our dearest friends reunite.
Khanak wiped her tears and looked at Tashu with a face full of determination: No Tashu, you forget the real reason why I left. He accused me of infidelity and didn't give a chance to defend myself. Don't get me wrong, I truly am happy that he has found himself at last..perhaps our separation had some good repercusions after all. But I want him to realize that I am a human being too, not just his shadow ,someone who picks up after him, I am his wife...his partner..
Tashu: I agree with you Khanak, I would feel the same way if I were you..but won't you give Shaan a chance to present his case in your court, at least you can be fair unlike he was?..
Khanak smiled and nodded: Okay dear, you don't give up easily do you?..but take it slow alright?
Tashu hugged Khanak : Haan baba...real slow.
--------------------
Back in his apartment Shaan couldn't keep still. He had been pacing up and down for the past 1/2 hour thinking about Khanak, worrying about her. He hoped that she was fine, why had she left.., perhaps his presence had upset her way too much. He hoped that she had not done anything foolish!!.... No!..Khanak was strong, not weak and irrational like him! And now she had an agenda of her own..she wouldn't throw that away for anything. Oh he had felt so proud of her tonight, when Mr Sabharwal had praised her, when he had heard her speak, when Tashu had told him about all that she had done in such a short time. It was a new feeling for him, to feel proud for somebody else's achievements..
My sweet Khanak, tum itna sab kuch karna chahti thi aur mujhe kuch bhi nahin bataya? Why did you hide from me your desires, your aspirations, were you too shy to ask?..No..its not Khanak's fault! Ever since we were married, it has always been about me! Shaan this, Shaan that.. never has it been about Khanak, my wife. I have always been the spoilt kid and put myself first..and she has quietly followed along, making my dreams hers. When I was teaching her in our Paathshala, I failed to see the spark in her eyes, my only purpose was to teach her enough so people would not laugh at her, not to educate her further or make her whole. Perhaps I was afraid that if she became independent she wouldn't need me any more. But I was wrong and you have proven it today Khanak!
Shaan looked at himself in the mirror and said: Khanak, its your turn to shine now and I promise your Shaan will always support you in whatever you do. I'll never hold you back...never! Please give me another chance to prove myself to you..Please I cannot live without you anymore!!..
For the first time in his life, Shaan went down on his knees clasping his hands together in front of him. He closed his eyes and said a silent prayer emptying his heart out to God. He then called Tashu..
Shaan: Tashu, why didn't you call, is Khanak ok, I've been besides myself worrying about her and I need to talk to her.
Tashu laughing: Slow down Shaan, she's alright, I've just finished talking with her and she has agreed to talk to you, she is still hurting a lot, you have to be careful.
Shaan overjoyed: Tashu, you are my guardian angel, how could I ever thank you for all you have done for us? I can't thank you enough for taking such good care of my Khanak..all inspite of what I did to you!..
Tashu with tears in her eyes, her voice breaking up: Shaan, don't remind me of the past.., I left everything far behind when I met Anand. As for taking care of Khanak? No Shaan she took care of herself and I was just there for her, like a true friend, nothing else!
Shaan: You were there where I should have been, Tashu!..you took over my responsibility. And yes, Anand is a 100 times more a Man than I ever was or will be! I'm really happy for you both!!
Tashu: Shaan, stop it!..you know that I''ll always be there for you and Thanks!! I'll try to set up something between you two!..
Shaan: Make it soon, I've waited long enough....
-------------------------------------------------
The next day, Shaan was having a tough time concentrating on his work, he was thinking of ways he could approach Khanak without seeming insincere and superfluous. He was eager to meet her at the same time he didn't want to rush it. He didn't want to make her feel pushed into a corner...but at the same time, now that he had seen her, he couldn't wait to see her again.
Saan bacchu, concentrate, nahin to Khanak ko kaise impress karega?...Shaan smiled tapping his head with his hand and opened a folder lying on his desk.
Just then he heard a knock on the door and the boss's secretary put her head in and said with a wide smile: What did you do Shaan to impress Mr. S? He hasn't stopped talking about you and some Ms.Khanak ever since he came in today. Some collaboration that we are all unaware off? I knew it..you silent types always have something up your sleeves. Anyways, he wants you in his cabin,,right away!!
Shaan got uph in a hurry knocking down a few files in the process, he couldn't believe his good fortune as he hurried to his boss's office and mouthed a silent thanks to God.
Mr S who seemed to be in a great mood waved him to a chair: Shaan beta, you don't mind me calling you beta do you? You are just my son's age..that foolish boy. Anyways, it was wonderful seeing you at the party last night. Looks like you are well aquainted with Natasha, her fiance Mr Anand and that very smart young lady, Miss Khanak..yes?
Shaan did not correct Mr. S that Khanak was his wife, that could happen later: Yes Sir, they are my old friends except Anand whom I just met, but he seems to be a very intelligent and astute businessman..
Mr.S : Exactly my thoughts, exactly my thoughts son..giving Shaan an appraising look.
Shaan, you know Miss Khanak is coming here today to give a presentation on her project and unfortunately I'll be out for an important meeting..so I thought since you already knew her quite well, that you could take my place at her talk, and report back to me later about whether her project is worth our money..which I'm pretty sure it is, but you see..we cannot avoid formalities. Ok, then what do you think?
Shaan was trying his best to not to go and give this wonderful man a hug, he gave him a quick nod and hurried out of the room. As soon as the door shut behind him he pumped his fists and said: Yes!! Khanak here I come..startling the people around him.
------------------------------------
Khanak sat in the empty conference room, nervously tapping the table with her pencil, and periodically glaring at Tashu who was sitting near her. She had announced only this morning that Mr S's office had called wanting to set up a meeting for today, so that they could move ahead quickly with her project. Mr S had been very impressed with her ideas last night and was eager to pay his dues to the society.
Khanak knowing that she may run into Shaan there, was unprepared and wasn't sure that she would be able to think straight in his presence. Tashu told her that this was unavoidable since Shaan worked for Mr S., who was her main investor. She just had to buck up and focus herself if she wanted accomplish her goals.
Khanak finally agreed but now that she was here her feet had turned to jelly and she had practicailly forgotten her opening lines.
People started trickling in and the conference room started to fill up, but there was no sign of Shaan or Mr S. Khanak looked at Tashu worried, who said that she would find out and went out. She came back after a few minutes with a big smile on her face and told Khanak that Mr S. had asked Khanak to go ahead and his representative will be soon in.
Khanak relieved and at the same time a little disappointed that Shaan wasn't there, stood up: Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I have come here to share my dreams with you...
The lights dimmed and the projector went on as Khanak warmed up to her talk. Her crystal clear voice rang with sincere passion and her eyes shone with an inner light which compelled everybody in the room to sit up and pay attention. Even those who had just come to play hokey from their work., couldn't help being swept under the spell of the moment. Khanak didn't need to refer to any notes as this was a topic close to her heart and she had been prepared for this day a long time. When she finished, there was pin drop silence in the room., then everybody started clapping and came up to her congratulating her and wishing her the best.
Shaan who had slipped in the back door, in order to not to disturb Khanak, had listened to the entire speech spell bound. His chest swelled up with pride as he saw her petite figure transform into a commanding presence sucking everybody into her spell! This girl had a bright future ahead and he was going to be her anchor.
Everybody had left the room and Khanak took a few deep breaths savoring the moment of and trying to calm herself down. She knew that her first talk was a success. Tashu came up and gave her a big hug and told her that she would for her wait outside.
Khanak starting gathering up her paraphernalia when she heard the sound of loud clapping from behind. She turned around to see Shaan smiling broadly. His face shone with love and pride. Khanak turned away, trying to hide the the tears of joy which threatened to roll down her cheeks.
Khanak, please meri taraf dekho!! Khanak turned around hearing the earnest tone in his voice...Khanak,you don't how proud I feel to see you today, you have achieved so much in such a short time, that it's if it had been any body else it would have been hard to believe. But not you Khanak, you have arrived and the world is at your feet. And I am the first in line.
Khanak blushed, confused to hear such words of praise from Shaan, she closed her eyes, thinking that soon she'd wake up from this dream...
Khanak?...she opened her eyes to see Shaan extending a long stemmed beautiful red rose in her direction along with a card,..she hesitated, Shaan pleaded, Please Khanak, don't say no, nahin to mera dil toot jayega.
Khanak reluctantly accepted the token.., and Shaan left after some hesitation.
Back in her room Khanak opened the card which had a heart on its cover:
Khanak,
I am not a poet to be able to express my feelings in beautiful words,
But I can tell you that I have changed and I speak from my heart.
I hope that the lines from this song can make you understand how I feel;
Tum aa gaye ho noor aa gaya hai
Nahin to charaago se lau aa rahi thi
Jeene ki tumse wajeh mil gayi hai
Badi bewajeh zindagi jaa rahi thi...
I love you Khanak,
Shantanu
This has always been one of my favorite songs and I felt it would fit their situation, here's the link if you care to watch it on YT, and plz do comment.....tell me if I shud continue...😃
Hello and Good evening to you all!! Here's Part 1 of the last part.!! I'll post the 2nd part tomorrow😃 NOTHING COMPARES 2 U
Khanak came out Phulwa's house looking for Shaan, eager to share with him the news that Phulwa had assurred all cooperation and the village women folk were raring to get started. She saw Shaan blinking and wiping his eyes. She rushed to him wondering what could have bothered him enough to make him cry, when he saw her he laughed saying:
Its nothing Khanak, just something in my eye...now its gone!
Khanak with some sarcasm: Of course, how can you city people adapt to the village air, something's bound to bother you sooner or later...Gaon mein Dhool nahin hoga to aur kya hoga?
Shaan looked at her with a pained look in his eyes, his wife still believed him to be the same, selfish, unfeeling, spoilt..
Khanak: Accha chalo, lets head back, I will arrange for a formal get together with the village women next week, it was too short a notice this time.
Shaan: You don't have to set it up, I assure you that I have enough stuff now that I can convince Mr S., to fund your project.
Khanak looking delighted: You do, are you sure? Then that will be the best thing that has happened to this village in a long time, it will give their children new hope for the future, open the doors to the world...
Shaan smiled in agreement: Yes new opportunities, new resources..and its all because of you Khanak!! No..no, don't disagree, this was possible only due to you..
Khanak shook her head: No Shaan, it was and will be a group effort, whatever I bring here would fall by the way side if it isn't for the hard work and cooperation of these wonderful women and their families who support them.
Shaan: Yes I agree with you, but you started it and no ifs or buts about that! By the way Khanak, you have come all the way to your hometown, don't you want to visit your family just once? They must have missed you a lot and you too must have missed them, no doubt!..
Khanak wistfully: Sach, kya aap mere saath aayenge?...its ok, you don't have to do this!
Shaan: Of course, zaroor aaoonga..aakhir they are my inlaws aren't they Khanak? and you haven't told them about our separation, have you?
Khanak seriously: No I haven't, I didn't want to get them worried..
Shaan smiling: and I'm sooo hungry..at least they will feed me unlike their daughter, who enjoys torturing her husband..he winked..
Khanak glared at him as they walked towards her house.
~~~~~~~

Khanak became very somber when she saw her house, she hadn't seen her Ada and Bai for so long, had they missed her? Did they think of her..she felt guilty that she hadn't even called them to enquire about their health and wellbeing..what kind of a daughter was she?...

As she was about to knock on the door...she heard Gopi's voice..

Shantanu bha!! Khanak didi!!!....

Khanak turned around in delight and hugged Gopi tightly as she ran into her arms with tears of joy flowing unrestricted from both their eyes..

Khanak!! Tum kahan thi ab tak, hamari yaad nahin aayi?

Khanak not knowing what to say looked to Shaan for help: Mein, mein...

Shaan: Gopi..tumhari Khanak didi thode kaam mein mast ho gayi thi magar usne kabhi bhi tumhe nahin bhulaya..woh hamesha tumko bahut yaad karti thi. Jaanti ho woh Dhulwadi ke liye kya kya sapne dekh rahi hai?

Gopi turned to Shaan and hugged him who hugged her right back, Khanak looking on surprised: Aur aap Shaan bhaiya!! Itni der baad hamari yaad aayi...two months ho gaye!

Shaan laughed: Wah,wah! angrezi acchi bolne lagi ho!! Maaf karna..mein aa nahin saka..kaam you know! Magar tumhare liye kuch lekar aaya hoon..

So saying he opened his messenger bag and pulled out several books and presented it to Gopi. Khanak getting more and more puzzled by the minute, saw that some of them were story books whereas some seemed to be school text books. Gopi grabbed them and hugged them to her chest, beaming with joy!

Thankyou Shantanu bha!! Aap kitne acche hain!! Khanak didi..Shantanu bha ne...

Shaan looked at Gopi and shook his head in the negative: Abhi nahin Gopi, baad mein, nahin to hamare surprise ka kya hoga?..

Accha bha..baad mein!! Chalo didi..ghar ke andar chalo, Ada, bai aap dono ka intezaar kar rahe hain!..

Khanak, whose head was reeling with questions looked again puzzled at Shaan...

Khanak..kal raat ko hi maine tumhare Ada aur Bai ko bulakar bata diya tha ke hum aaj aa rahe hain..., is tarah hamari kuch khatir dari bhi ho jaayegi..huh?

Khanak knocked on the door..why was Gopi acting so familiar with Shaan, yes she had made him her bha but still.., and the books, English? And what was the surprise they were talking about?...

The door opened and Khanak's mother stood there smiling with Ada standing on her side. She was holding an Aarti thali in her hand...

Shantanu beta, hamein tumne kitna intezaar karvaya...thoda ruko aur mujhe tumhara swagat karne do!

So saying she welcomed them both by performing aarti in front of them and putting the auspicious tika on their foreheads... She and Khanak's Ada blessed the couple and hugged them both. Khanak who was seeing her parents after more tha a year, was overwhelmed with emotion and started sobbing heavily. Her mother and Gopi hugged her and tried to console her in vain..

Khanak's Bai: Beta Khanak, kyon ro rahi ho, sab theek thak hai na? Shantanu jab yahaan pichli baar aaya tha , tab usne kaha ki tumhari tabiyat ( health), kuch teekh nahin thi..is liye tum aa nahin saki. Ab kaisi hai tabiyat?

Khanak looked at her mother's concerned face and then at Shaan: Haan, magar ab sab teekh hai., aap sab kaise hain?..

Ada smiling: Hamari tum fikr mat karo, hum bahut khush hain, ab jo tum aa gayi ho! Shantanu beta hamari khoob dekh bhal karta hai aur har 2-3 mahinon mein hamein dekhne bhi aata hai. Ab tum dono kuch kha lo, bahut thak gaye honge!

Shaan's face lit up at the mention of food, while Khanak looked gratefully at him. The hundreds of questions which had been bothering her were gradually getting answered.

They had a wonderful late Gujarati lunch, with both of Khanak's parents fussing over them and Gopi teasing Shantanu with something or the other. Khanak marvelled at how relaxed Shaan and her parents seemed in each others company, there seemed to be no formalities at all and easy laughter flowed as if they were close knit family. Shaan did not resemble the man she had met or for that matter the one who had callously broken her heart 6 months ago, he had changed. Khanak looked back on what had transpired since she met him a few days ago, and concluded that he almost seemed like a different man.., quieter, more sensitive, thoughtful, caring, less brash and definitely more mature., more grown up. He seemed more responsible and confident in himself., not like the little lost boy who always sought some other's help and advise. She felt herself forgetting her bitterness and started to feel drawn towards him, this new Shaan. She found his subdued yet indelible charm very attractive. But did he still need her like before? Khanak was afraid to answer that question....

Shaan and Khanak wished Khanak's parents' goodbye, after graciously refusing their invitation to spend the night, giving the excuse that Shaan had to report to work early the next day. Khanak's parents and Gopi had been pleasantly surprised and delighted at Khanak's newly acquired self confidence which was quite obvious from her demeanor and wished them all happiness in the future. Khanak's mother also told them that it was high time that she saw the face of her first grandchild, at which Khanak blushed and Shaan seemed particularly amused watching her react that way.

Outside in the courtyard, Gopi was waiting for them..

Shaan bha, yaad hai? Surprise?!!..

Haan yaad hai..chalo!

Khanak confused: Magar kahaan, wapis nahin jaana hai kya?

Shaan smiled one of his playful smiles: Agar tum kaho to mein yahin ruk jaon... Magar jaane se pehle tumhare liye ek surprise hai, bas thoda chalna hoga.

Khanak who had had more than her fair share of revelations that day relunctantly agreed and followed Gopi as she led the way.

After walking about 20 minutes which brought them some ways away from the village, through green fields and tall sugarcane plantations, they came to a large clearing which had been fenced off. Gopi, who had maintained a non stop chatter since they had left the house, ran to stand in front a large official looking sign...

Yeh hai hamaara Surprise!...

Gopi dramatically moved aside, her hand pointing to the display board., which declared in large bold letters...

FUTURE SITE FOR KHANAK's PAATHSHALA....KG to 6th GRADE, expected to OPEN IN Summer 2011!

Khanak stared stupidly at the sign, her mind not processing what her eyes seemed to be telling her. Khanak's Paathshala?, a school named after her? She looked in disbelief at Gopi and then at Shaan who were both nodding and grinning at her, telling her yes, it was true! Dhulwadi was going to have a elementary school were children could get an education without having to travel to the nearest school which was some 20 miles away.

Finally when she was able to put her thought into words: Yeh sab..Kaise, Kyon?

Khanak, yeh sab Shantanu bha ka jaadu hai, unhon ne jee jaan se pichle 4 months se is par kaam kiya hai, hai na bha?

Shaan said sincerely: Khanak, yeh koi jaadu nahin hai, yeh tumhara sapna hai! Yaad hai, tumne mujh se ek baar kaha tha ke Dhulwadi mein bahut bachche school nahin jaate kyon ki woh bahut door tha aur ladkiyaan sirf 8th tak hi padhti theen. Is liye mujhe yeh idea aaya aur meine goverment ko ek proposal likha aur 3 months ke baad they agreed and grant sanction kar diya, jis se maine kuch gaon walon ke saath mil kar yeh plot khareeda. Abhi sirf 5th grade tak shuru kar ne ka iraada hai, uske baad high school! aur sab bilkul free!

Khanak still thinking that it was a dream: Magar itna paisa kahaan se aayega? Teachers, kitaaben, kursiyaan, tables..

Shaan: Haan, aur computers! ..Haan computers bhi yeh school mein zaroor honge, meine sab soch ke rakha hai. You know Khanak, duniya mein aaj bhi kai log hain jo acche kaam ke liye madad karne ko ready hain. And I have talked to many such people already, is liye tum worry mat karo!

Gopi jumping with excitement: Haan didi, Shaan bha sach kehte hain! Aur saare goan wale is school ke liye bahut khush hain, aur iske khulne ke liye betaabi se intezaar kar rahe hain!

Khanak saw her dream turning into a reality and felt content, a feeling which matched no other, a feeling of satisfaction and peace. And there was also a feeling of pride and admiration for her husband, who had achieved this almost single handedly, the mark of a man with a purpose in life...finally Mr Shantanu Khandelwal had arrived.

~~~~~~~~
The sky had started to turn dark and the light was quickly fading and Shaan indicated that it was time to go back. They started back the way the had come in silence each busy with their own thoughts, even Gopi realising the gravity of the moment and had fallen quiet, perhaps she had detected that everything was not alright between Shaan and Khanak.
Ouch!!!
Shaan and Gopi turned back to see Khanak sitting on the mud path holding her right ankle, her face twisted in agony. Gopi ran back and examined the ankle and declared that it was probably twisted. She tried to help Khanak up but she sat down again, crying in pain.
Ab kya karein, Ms Khanak, kya aap nahin jaanti thi ke goan ki galiyon aur high heels ke beech mein banti nahin hai!?..
Shaan had an exasperated look on his face.
Mujhe pata nahin tha ke humein kheton mein ghoomne ka plan bhi hai!
Phir bhi!!
...Shaan took a look at Khanak's ankle which had already started to swell, and decided that she couldn't walk the rest of the way. He swung her up in his arms, despite her protests and started to walk with a grim look on his face..
Khanak who had to put her arms around his neck to support herself, realised uncomfortably that it had been a long time since she had found herself in such close proximity to him. She could smell his particular brand of aftershave, which brought back memories and the warmth of his chest seep into her skin as he held her close fearing that he may stumble and fall as he picked his way on the poorly visible path. When they reached the jeep, he dumped her roughly into the passenger seat, which made her let out a scream of protest. Gopi bid them a quick farewell and hurried off toward her house. Khanak looked at Shaan grumpily while he rummaged in the back looking for the first aid kit, wondering what had got to him suddenly. He came back with a long piece of elastic bandage and gruffly asked her to put her foot up on the seat. As she looked on, he gently but firmly wrapped her ankle and asked her elevate it on the dashboard to reduce the swelling. She obeyed silently, fearing something unpleasant if she did not. Shaan got back in the driver's and after fastening Khanak's seat belt, started driving back to Mumbai.
They hadn't spoken a single word to each other for at least an hour. Shaan had been trying hard to fight the acute desire which Khanak's closeness had aroused in him, as he carried her in his arms. He stole a sideways glance at Khanak and found her fast asleep, her head awkwardly leaning to the left and her face covered by her lush dark hair, blown by the gentle wind. He smiled indulgently and adjusted her head to lean on his shoulder and drove on.
Dearest Khanak,
Words fail to express
How much I love you
How deeply I care
There is no one else
but you for me
Do you think
That I have some hope
To win you?
