Hello and Good evening to you all!! Here's Part 1 of the last part.!! I'll post the 2nd part tomorrow😃 NOTHING COMPARES 2 U Khanak came out Phulwa's house looking for Shaan, eager to share with him the news that Phulwa had assurred all cooperation and the village women folk were raring to get started. She saw Shaan blinking and wiping his eyes. She rushed to him wondering what could have bothered him enough to make him cry, when he saw her he laughed saying:
Its nothing Khanak, just something in my eye...now its gone!
Khanak with some sarcasm: Of course, how can you city people adapt to the village air, something's bound to bother you sooner or later...Gaon mein Dhool nahin hoga to aur kya hoga?
Shaan looked at her with a pained look in his eyes, his wife still believed him to be the same, selfish, unfeeling, spoilt..
Khanak: Accha chalo, lets head back, I will arrange for a formal get together with the village women next week, it was too short a notice this time.
Shaan: You don't have to set it up, I assure you that I have enough stuff now that I can convince Mr S., to fund your project.
Khanak looking delighted: You do, are you sure? Then that will be the best thing that has happened to this village in a long time, it will give their children new hope for the future, open the doors to the world...
Shaan smiled in agreement: Yes new opportunities, new resources..and its all because of you Khanak!! No..no, don't disagree, this was possible only due to you..
Khanak shook her head: No Shaan, it was and will be a group effort, whatever I bring here would fall by the way side if it isn't for the hard work and cooperation of these wonderful women and their families who support them.
Shaan: Yes I agree with you, but you started it and no ifs or buts about that! By the way Khanak, you have come all the way to your hometown, don't you want to visit your family just once? They must have missed you a lot and you too must have missed them, no doubt!..
Khanak wistfully: Sach, kya aap mere saath aayenge?...its ok, you don't have to do this!
Shaan: Of course, zaroor aaoonga..aakhir they are my inlaws aren't they Khanak? and you haven't told them about our separation, have you?
Khanak seriously: No I haven't, I didn't want to get them worried..
Shaan smiling: and I'm sooo hungry..at least they will feed me unlike their daughter, who enjoys torturing her husband..he winked..
Khanak glared at him as they walked towards her house.
~~~~~~~
Khanak became very somber when she saw her house, she hadn't seen her Ada and Bai for so long, had they missed her? Did they think of her..she felt guilty that she hadn't even called them to enquire about their health and wellbeing..what kind of a daughter was she?...
As she was about to knock on the door...she heard Gopi's voice..
Shantanu bha!! Khanak didi!!!....
Khanak turned around in delight and hugged Gopi tightly as she ran into her arms with tears of joy flowing unrestricted from both their eyes..
Khanak!! Tum kahan thi ab tak, hamari yaad nahin aayi?
Khanak not knowing what to say looked to Shaan for help: Mein, mein...
Shaan: Gopi..tumhari Khanak didi thode kaam mein mast ho gayi thi magar usne kabhi bhi tumhe nahin bhulaya..woh hamesha tumko bahut yaad karti thi. Jaanti ho woh Dhulwadi ke liye kya kya sapne dekh rahi hai?
Gopi turned to Shaan and hugged him who hugged her right back, Khanak looking on surprised: Aur aap Shaan bhaiya!! Itni der baad hamari yaad aayi...two months ho gaye!
Shaan laughed: Wah,wah! angrezi acchi bolne lagi ho!! Maaf karna..mein aa nahin saka..kaam you know! Magar tumhare liye kuch lekar aaya hoon..
So saying he opened his messenger bag and pulled out several books and presented it to Gopi. Khanak getting more and more puzzled by the minute, saw that some of them were story books whereas some seemed to be school text books. Gopi grabbed them and hugged them to her chest, beaming with joy!
Thankyou Shantanu bha!! Aap kitne acche hain!! Khanak didi..Shantanu bha ne...
Shaan looked at Gopi and shook his head in the negative: Abhi nahin Gopi, baad mein, nahin to hamare surprise ka kya hoga?..
Accha bha..baad mein!! Chalo didi..ghar ke andar chalo, Ada, bai aap dono ka intezaar kar rahe hain!..
Khanak, whose head was reeling with questions looked again puzzled at Shaan...
Khanak..kal raat ko hi maine tumhare Ada aur Bai ko bulakar bata diya tha ke hum aaj aa rahe hain..., is tarah hamari kuch khatir dari bhi ho jaayegi..huh?
Khanak knocked on the door..why was Gopi acting so familiar with Shaan, yes she had made him her bha but still.., and the books, English? And what was the surprise they were talking about?...
The door opened and Khanak's mother stood there smiling with Ada standing on her side. She was holding an Aarti thali in her hand...
Shantanu beta, hamein tumne kitna intezaar karvaya...thoda ruko aur mujhe tumhara swagat karne do!
So saying she welcomed them both by performing aarti in front of them and putting the auspicious tika on their foreheads... She and Khanak's Ada blessed the couple and hugged them both. Khanak who was seeing her parents after more tha a year, was overwhelmed with emotion and started sobbing heavily. Her mother and Gopi hugged her and tried to console her in vain..
Khanak's Bai: Beta Khanak, kyon ro rahi ho, sab theek thak hai na? Shantanu jab yahaan pichli baar aaya tha , tab usne kaha ki tumhari tabiyat ( health), kuch teekh nahin thi..is liye tum aa nahin saki. Ab kaisi hai tabiyat?
Khanak looked at her mother's concerned face and then at Shaan: Haan, magar ab sab teekh hai., aap sab kaise hain?..
Ada smiling: Hamari tum fikr mat karo, hum bahut khush hain, ab jo tum aa gayi ho! Shantanu beta hamari khoob dekh bhal karta hai aur har 2-3 mahinon mein hamein dekhne bhi aata hai. Ab tum dono kuch kha lo, bahut thak gaye honge!
Shaan's face lit up at the mention of food, while Khanak looked gratefully at him. The hundreds of questions which had been bothering her were gradually getting answered.
They had a wonderful late Gujarati lunch, with both of Khanak's parents fussing over them and Gopi teasing Shantanu with something or the other. Khanak marvelled at how relaxed Shaan and her parents seemed in each others company, there seemed to be no formalities at all and easy laughter flowed as if they were close knit family. Shaan did not resemble the man she had met or for that matter the one who had callously broken her heart 6 months ago, he had changed. Khanak looked back on what had transpired since she met him a few days ago, and concluded that he almost seemed like a different man.., quieter, more sensitive, thoughtful, caring, less brash and definitely more mature., more grown up. He seemed more responsible and confident in himself., not like the little lost boy who always sought some other's help and advise. She felt herself forgetting her bitterness and started to feel drawn towards him, this new Shaan. She found his subdued yet indelible charm very attractive. But did he still need her like before? Khanak was afraid to answer that question....
Shaan and Khanak wished Khanak's parents' goodbye, after graciously refusing their invitation to spend the night, giving the excuse that Shaan had to report to work early the next day. Khanak's parents and Gopi had been pleasantly surprised and delighted at Khanak's newly acquired self confidence which was quite obvious from her demeanor and wished them all happiness in the future. Khanak's mother also told them that it was high time that she saw the face of her first grandchild, at which Khanak blushed and Shaan seemed particularly amused watching her react that way.
Outside in the courtyard, Gopi was waiting for them..
Shaan bha, yaad hai? Surprise?!!..
Haan yaad hai..chalo!
Khanak confused: Magar kahaan, wapis nahin jaana hai kya?
Shaan smiled one of his playful smiles: Agar tum kaho to mein yahin ruk jaon... Magar jaane se pehle tumhare liye ek surprise hai, bas thoda chalna hoga.
Khanak who had had more than her fair share of revelations that day relunctantly agreed and followed Gopi as she led the way.
After walking about 20 minutes which brought them some ways away from the village, through green fields and tall sugarcane plantations, they came to a large clearing which had been fenced off. Gopi, who had maintained a non stop chatter since they had left the house, ran to stand in front a large official looking sign...
Yeh hai hamaara Surprise!...
Gopi dramatically moved aside, her hand pointing to the display board., which declared in large bold letters...
FUTURE SITE FOR KHANAK's PAATHSHALA....KG to 6th GRADE, expected to OPEN IN Summer 2011!
Khanak stared stupidly at the sign, her mind not processing what her eyes seemed to be telling her. Khanak's Paathshala?, a school named after her? She looked in disbelief at Gopi and then at Shaan who were both nodding and grinning at her, telling her yes, it was true! Dhulwadi was going to have a elementary school were children could get an education without having to travel to the nearest school which was some 20 miles away.
Finally when she was able to put her thought into words: Yeh sab..Kaise, Kyon?
Khanak, yeh sab Shantanu bha ka jaadu hai, unhon ne jee jaan se pichle 4 months se is par kaam kiya hai, hai na bha?
Shaan said sincerely: Khanak, yeh koi jaadu nahin hai, yeh tumhara sapna hai! Yaad hai, tumne mujh se ek baar kaha tha ke Dhulwadi mein bahut bachche school nahin jaate kyon ki woh bahut door tha aur ladkiyaan sirf 8th tak hi padhti theen. Is liye mujhe yeh idea aaya aur meine goverment ko ek proposal likha aur 3 months ke baad they agreed and grant sanction kar diya, jis se maine kuch gaon walon ke saath mil kar yeh plot khareeda. Abhi sirf 5th grade tak shuru kar ne ka iraada hai, uske baad high school! aur sab bilkul free!
Khanak still thinking that it was a dream: Magar itna paisa kahaan se aayega? Teachers, kitaaben, kursiyaan, tables..
Shaan: Haan, aur computers! ..Haan computers bhi yeh school mein zaroor honge, meine sab soch ke rakha hai. You know Khanak, duniya mein aaj bhi kai log hain jo acche kaam ke liye madad karne ko ready hain. And I have talked to many such people already, is liye tum worry mat karo!
Gopi jumping with excitement: Haan didi, Shaan bha sach kehte hain! Aur saare goan wale is school ke liye bahut khush hain, aur iske khulne ke liye betaabi se intezaar kar rahe hain!
Khanak saw her dream turning into a reality and felt content, a feeling which matched no other, a feeling of satisfaction and peace. And there was also a feeling of pride and admiration for her husband, who had achieved this almost single handedly, the mark of a man with a purpose in life...finally Mr Shantanu Khandelwal had arrived.
~~~~~~~~
The sky had started to turn dark and the light was quickly fading and Shaan indicated that it was time to go back. They started back the way the had come in silence each busy with their own thoughts, even Gopi realising the gravity of the moment and had fallen quiet, perhaps she had detected that everything was not alright between Shaan and Khanak.
Ouch!!!
Shaan and Gopi turned back to see Khanak sitting on the mud path holding her right ankle, her face twisted in agony. Gopi ran back and examined the ankle and declared that it was probably twisted. She tried to help Khanak up but she sat down again, crying in pain.
Ab kya karein, Ms Khanak, kya aap nahin jaanti thi ke goan ki galiyon aur high heels ke beech mein banti nahin hai!?..
Shaan had an exasperated look on his face. Mujhe pata nahin tha ke humein kheton mein ghoomne ka plan bhi hai!
Phir bhi!!
...Shaan took a look at Khanak's ankle which had already started to swell, and decided that she couldn't walk the rest of the way. He swung her up in his arms, despite her protests and started to walk with a grim look on his face.. Khanak who had to put her arms around his neck to support herself, realised uncomfortably that it had been a long time since she had found herself in such close proximity to him. She could smell his particular brand of aftershave, which brought back memories and the warmth of his chest seep into her skin as he held her close fearing that he may stumble and fall as he picked his way on the poorly visible path. When they reached the jeep, he dumped her roughly into the passenger seat, which made her let out a scream of protest. Gopi bid them a quick farewell and hurried off toward her house. Khanak looked at Shaan grumpily while he rummaged in the back looking for the first aid kit, wondering what had got to him suddenly. He came back with a long piece of elastic bandage and gruffly asked her to put her foot up on the seat. As she looked on, he gently but firmly wrapped her ankle and asked her elevate it on the dashboard to reduce the swelling. She obeyed silently, fearing something unpleasant if she did not. Shaan got back in the driver's and after fastening Khanak's seat belt, started driving back to Mumbai.
They hadn't spoken a single word to each other for at least an hour. Shaan had been trying hard to fight the acute desire which Khanak's closeness had aroused in him, as he carried her in his arms. He stole a sideways glance at Khanak and found her fast asleep, her head awkwardly leaning to the left and her face covered by her lush dark hair, blown by the gentle wind. He smiled indulgently and adjusted her head to lean on his shoulder and drove on.
Dearest Khanak,
Words fail to express
How much I love you
How deeply I care
There is no one else
but you for me
Do you think
That I have some hope
To win you?

Hope you like and Comments please!!😃
