Unbounded love

Kausalya reproaches Bharata, when the latter goes to meet her upon his return from his maternal uncle's house. It is not that she dislikes Bharata, but her love for Lord Rama, blinds her momentarily, so that she blames where no blame is due. Everyone who came in contact with Rama had unbounded love for Him, said Kurichi Sreenarayanachariar, in a lecture.

When Guha offers to keep a watch over Rama when the latter is asleep so that Lakshmana too can get some rest, the latter refuses. He is unwilling to trust the care and welfare of the Lord to anyone else.

When Bharata decides to request Rama to come back to Ayodhya, he goes to the forest, with his army. Guha, seeing Bharata, presumes that Bharata has come to harm Rama. So he orders his men to arm themselves and to get into boats, so that they can go and fight Bharata. When Sumantra tells Guha the purpose of Bharata's visit to the forest, Guha is ashamed that he had suspected the intentions of one so devoted to Rama.

He wants to make amends for suspecting such a true devotee of the Lord. So he does what would please any true devotee. He talks to Bharata about how Lakshmana is serving Rama in the forest. A true devotee will be happy to hear of the service of other devotees to the Lord. Hence Guha tells Bharata, of where Rama slept, of how Lakshmana washed His feet, of how Lakshmana fanned Rama and Sita, as they slept. When Guha points to the spot where Rama had slept, Bharata weeps.

Lakshmana, who has taken on the duty of protecting the Lord and Sita, notices Bharata approaching with the army, and he too jumps to the conclusion that Bharata has come to harm Rama. The Lord tells Lakshmana that He knows Bharata has come to request Rama's return to Ayodhya, a request He is not going to comply with. Rama tells the angry Lakshmana that Bharata will willingly stay with Him in the forest, and that Lakshmana can go back to Ayodhya in place of Bharata. Only then does Lakshmana quieten down.

It is not as if Kausalya or Lakshmana did not know of Bharata's love for Rama. But so great is the love that results in people when they meet Rama that all else is forgotten.

The bewitching lotus eyes

When we admire the beauty of things in this world, we think they are lasting, but we must realise that nothing is more endearing than the charms of Lord Narayana, Kidambi Narayanan said in a lecture.

When we see a beautiful object or a good looking person, we are taken in by the beauty of the object or the good looks of the individual. We think that there can be nothing beyond these charms; we cannot think beyond that moment of enrapture; we become obsessed sometimes with the beauty of things or of human beings.

There was a man, who was so charmed by the beauty of his wife's eyes that he was obsessed with them. His thoughts were always of how beautiful her eyes were. Once when the Vaishnavite Acharya Ramanuja was passing by, he noticed that this man was holding an umbrella over his wife's head, carefully shielding her from the sun. Ramanuja wondered at the strangeness of the spectacle, for the man seemed not to notice anything else. The people there explained that the man was so obsessed with the beauty of his wife's eyes that he was a slave to her eyes.

Ramanuja asked the man if he would become the slave of another person, if that person had even more lovely eyes than his wife? The man said he would. Ramanuja then took him to the temple and showed him the beauty of Lord Ranganatha's eyes. Bewitched by the beauty of the Lord's eyes, that man became a slave to the Lord's beauty, and therefore to the Lord Himself.

The man who thus was taken in by the beauty of the Lord's eyes was called Pillai Urangavalli Dasar. He went on to serve at the Srirangam temple, and his wife too served Lord Ranganatha. During the procession of the deity, Pillai Uranagavilli Dasar would stand guard.

Thus it was that one who had been enamoured of his wife's eyes became a slave to the beauty of Lord Ranganatha's eyes. Even the enemies of the Lord end up admiring His beauty, especially His eyes. When Krishna enters Duryodhana's palace, after visiting Vidhura, an angry Duryodhana addresses the Lord as 'Lotus-eyed One.' One cannot help oneself when it comes to admiring the beauty of His eyes.
