Wrt the above discussions, I have a doubt here.
Does any version say about Rama's view on his father's many marriages?
Rama followed "Ek Patni Vrat" and says that marrying another woman is an insult to the existing wife. What does he think of his father's action then?

Sorry, I had worded it wrong. I meant to say that it would make sense to marry 350 people from different rajyas for political favor and alliance. But why would he need to marry people from the same place, if it was not for something else, say in this case, for an heir to the throne?

Does Valmiki actually have the account of Rama promising Sita that she and she alone would be his wife? I've looked for references to it in 1-76 and 2-1, but couldn't find it. Nor is there any account of her suhaag raat in the Ramayan - something that has been glorified in so many movies.

Also, regarding your yagna question above, in 1-14-33, they do mention that Kaushalya symbolically thrust a knife into the sacrificed horse, symbolically 'killing' it, and the notes there state that all the 3 queens - KSK - performed this ritual. Note that this account is for the Ashwamedha, and not the Putrakshmeshti yagna. There was no mention of a rejected queen, and I don't think Sumitra qualifies, or else, Dasharath wouldn't have given her the payash 2 times.

Exit question: in Rama's Ashwamedha, wouldn't this symbolic sacrifice by the wife of the sacrificed horse have been needed as well, if it was with Dasharath? And if so, who could have done it? Mandavi, as the yuvrani?

True, Valmiki Ramayan does not have any account of Ek Patni Vrat or any Suhaag Raat. We don't expect a Suhaag Raat when the boy is around 12 and the girl around 6 years of age.
Reg. AY & PKY, I guess the AY can be performed for various reasons, like establishing supremacy, getting rid of sins or for a specific purpose like desire of a child.
And the queens are involved in any of the actual ritual depending on the reason. For eg. If its the desire for a child, it makes sense if the queens are involved bcoz they r the ones going to bear the child. In this case it would be called a Putra Kameshti Yagna.
But in case of establishing supremacy or similiar aim, the queens may not be involved in any of the actual rituals except in giving the final oblations. It may be called a Rajasuya Yagna.
Likewise to get rid of a sin, the queen may or maynot be involved in the actual rituals.

True - if Sumitra was a rejected queen, then she would not have been given the Payas twice. Sorry, but do not recollect the source where I read it from.

Is the same DOTW on for the next week too or do we have a different one?
Also, a request - when we start a new DOTW, please mention the date too, so we know if we are on the current DOTW or a previous one....
Thnx!

Sorry for bringing back a topic already discussed. Wasn't Ram 16 years old (or about 16 - about to turn 16) when he got married?

The timelines are still confusing to me. 😭😕

In the Bala kand, Dasaratha tells Vishwamitra that Rama is not even 16, which could mean any age under 16.
But Mareech tells Ravan that Ram killed Tadaka & Subahu when he was just around 12.
So my guess is Ram was 12 or 13 when he got married.

That matches Sita's description to Ravan.

But somehow, while I respect Valmiki as the ultimate authority, his stats & timelines sometimes invite more questions than provide answers. Like if Rama & Sita lived 12 years in Ayodhya, what happened during all that time? Also, how did Sita have all that renowned beauty that a ruler Sudhanva of Saamkaasha demanded Shiva's bow and her hand in marriage from Janak (1-71-17). Janak killed him in battle, and handed over his kingdom to Kushadhwaj. Which adult ruler, even then, would demand the hand of a 6 year old in marriage, particularly since the custom, even then, was to marry off daughters when they were at least in double digit ages, if not teens. (How about the possibility that Sita inflated her time in Ayodhya to demonstrate that she had been married even longer than she actually had been, in order to make the disguised Ravan less interested in her?)

Also, how much younger would Urmila have been then - 5, or 4? And along with Sita to Rama, Janak would have handed her over to Lakshman in marriage? Somehow, I still believe that the brothers were 16, and the sisters were 14 and younger, but not by much.
