@ Polygamy / bigamy

Many of u have said that polygamy is not that bad n shud be allowed under certain special circumstances if both the partner agree. Polygamy includes both Polygyny and Polyandry. I m sure that none of us will support polyandry even feminist like me also. Polygyny by men can be described as luxury of men but polyandry is always a exploitation. I was reading Pratibhi Rai's Draupadi. When a men marries two or more womem he is under no obligation to treat all of them equallty but when Draupadi married all five bros she was bound to treat them equallly, please then equally, serve them equally.

Polyandry can no way be allowed. Its just disastrous.

How one can support Polygamy. See the male female sex ratio of India its 921:1000. For every 1000 men there r only 921 women. Its worst in Punjab n Haryana where once foeticide of female flourished like a business. In such a situation if polygamy is allowed baaki ladko ka kya hoga wo tho kaware hi mar jaayenge.😉😆 If any era comes when for every 1000 men there r 2000 women polygamy by men can be considered.

If law allows Polygamy it will be misused n misused only. Sometimes even parents fail to treat their chidren equally how wives can logically expect equal treatment from husband in case of polygamy. It is not possible for any man to treat all his wives equally. There may be some special cases I agree but allowing ploygamy can be misused widely. Monogamy is most blissful n good for India

I agree with Purvi. Our society is not responsible enough to have more than one spouse. Like Purvi said, equality between children is sometimes not shown by some parents. How then would equality between different spouses be shown?
I think our nation will be peaceful with monogamy only. Based on mythology, people are using it as an excuse to have more than one spouse, but many don't even have one ounce of the amount of responsibility people in Treta and Dwapar Yug had. So how can they manage more than one spouse?

but at the same time there must be loop holes in the same... there may be a cases where a person can deny that he is in live in relation ship with particular person.... or may conspire against someone that they are in relationship... is there any solution for such things....

tuf question. Unfortunately the answer is no. I think there is no such guidelines. As per Domestic Violence Act it must the proved that they r living together or have lived together n shared household. No minimum time period is prescribed. It may become very difficult to prove live-in. sometimes it becomes difficult to prove even marriage solemnised before the whole community. that is why Hon'ble Supreme Court has made registration of marriage complusory. U r right one may misuse this gap. She may extort money in name of maintainence without being in live in relationship but yet 125 CrPc is not amended to include female partner fo live-in.

Purvi - you are a pro here in this thread. Lots of points and well quoted too.

But friends, why are discussing things that are not of our culture - Marriage vs. Live in, Polygamy vs. Polyandry, etc. I thought the discussion was on Marriage and how to sustain it?

But then, lots of things to learn from here😊
Also, we are in Kali yug, so lets not compare with those in Sat, Treta or Dwapar yugs.

@deepa agree discussion has gone a bit off track.

As we r discussing ideals of marraige given in Ramayan and our take on this such things r bound to come up. We r living in kalyug. Many consider marriage a better alternative to marriage as they think that marriage suffocates, bounds n take all freedom. we r living in today's world. we cant deny existence of live-in in todays India. Nothing wrong in dicussinng. Hope we will find out in this discussion that marriage is any day better then live-in if ideals laid down in Ramayana r followed.
Divorce is big threat to instituion of marriage n family. Such things r bound to come up in discussion related to marriage be it a epic based one
I think nothing like polyandry vs polygamy is going on this discussion. pls read my post again. I wanted to say that monogamy is best. Polygyny can be said luxury of men but polyandry is always exploitation of women. We shud look at the present situation of India. social norms shud be made according to the society. In epics it was jusitfied in some circumstances but then situation was differnt. Monogamy is most blissful. Ramayana shows a ideal human life. Ramayan too says that monogamy is the best

I think both as it is a solemnized bond between a man and woman who are in love. Today's society in the west is full of divorce and it is only really the older generations who are keeping to the marriage. I myself think that marriage is a sacred and very beautiful bond of love, companionship and sharing life together.

Sadly society today makes a mockery of marriage, (in the west - not sure of India) but I have my parents divorced so I can see that side as well which is not good.

agree with porvi on this...
these discussion bounds to happen..
i raise this topic because as in today's society these cases are normal.
people preference has been changed...
but this changes is how good or bad we need to discuss on the same...
regrading divorce yes they are threat...to the society..
and India is not anyway untouched from this..
earlier it think to be a bad but people these days are taking liberty and using it as a tool to move away from such a beautiful relation...
earlier thinking of divorce word is enough to make people.. threaten
but things are not same today....
the value of our rich and great culture seems to be loosing it ground....
