In my English class in New York, we reached the Indian Mythology Section in the textbooks and I decided to start with the Ramayan (since it is a little easier for Americans to understand Ramayan more than Mahabharat). But how in the world do I teach 15 year old American students, who don't know anything about our mythology, Ramayan? I only have two weeks to teach Indian mythology before we move on to Greek Mythology, and in those two weeks, five days are Ramayan!😕 How in the world do I do it? There are sooo many points to cover and personally, I don't want to leave out anything! Can anyone please help me out here?

lalitha di keep it simpler. covering so many things is few days might create confusion n make it boring for an 15 yers old american student.

di dont worry abt leaving any point. I m a student. I wud like my teacher to make the class interesting n interactive. Becoz iif the class is boring we loss interest in the subject. but if the class is interesting we keep asking questions to know more n more abt the subject. di make ur ramayan class intersting one. if he finds ramayan interesting he'll ask u more n more abt it n u'll be able to cover all points

It is important to keep in mind what your aim is in teaching about Ramayan. I mean that what do you want the students to gain from it.

I feel that if students gain the teachings from Ramayan, then that will be very good. You should tell the story in such a way that the story is interesting and also, they learn something from it.
Ramayan has lots of things to teach. Whole lifetime also may not be sufficient to uncover all its teachings. But you have only 5 days.
Therefore start by saying that Ravan was a very strong king but very evil. You do not need to tell them the details of Ravan. Do not tell how Ravan was born, who his parents were etc. There is no need to explain all those. Just say that he was very strong, had defeated many kings and was torturing everybody.
Then jump to the birth of Ram and his three brothers. Again, there is no need to explain about putrakameshti yagna and all that. Because that will confuse the American students.
Then talk about how much love the brothers have among themselves. Tell how great Ram was, how much he was loved by all.
Tell about Vishwamitra taking Ram and Laxman with them. Let students know that the princes gave lots of respect to Vishwamitra.
After that talk about Kaikeyi's demands. Let students know that Ram could easily acquire the kingdom forcefully but he had no greed. He accepted to go on exile. Tell how devoted Sita and Laxman were that they could have easily enjoyed in palace but they went with Ram.
Tell that in jungle, Ram and Laxman killed many evil people. No need of describing all the battles. Just saying that Ram and Laxman killed many evil people is sufficient.
Then talk about Sita's kidnap, devotion of Hanuman, war and killing of Ravan. Finish by summarizing that morales of Ramayan.

avinash wow u narrated in a very lucid n sweet way

Lalitha di give stress on why Lord Ram was so popular n loved by all in his days n even after so many thousand years why Indian people r so devoted to him n love him so much Lord Ram was very popular among his freinds like Lord Krishna. Give stress on Lord Ram's friendly, caring n loving nature, his intelligence, handsomeness n bravey n laxman's devoted nature n intelligence. how Ramayana ideals is relevant even today to led a good life n for peace n prosperity in family n society

Explain this is simple language. students will like it

pituH aaj~naam puraskR^itya paura kaaryaaNi sarvashaH || 1-77-21
cakaara raamaH sarvaaNi priyaaNi ca hitaani ca |
maatR^ibhyo maatR^i kaaryaaNi kR^itvaa parama ya.ntritaH || 1-77-22
guruuNaam guru kaaryaaNi kaale kaale anvavaikshata |
(its form bal kand after marriage )

Rama keeping his father's directives in view undertook welfare activities for the people that are agreeable and even advantageous to them, and in the entirety of those activities, and he undertook activities to humour motherly affection with his mothers, and educational activities with educators, and in a highly self-disciplined manner he used to review them carefully from time to time.

evam dasharathaH priito braahmaNaa naigamaaH tathaa || 1-77-23
raamasya shiila vR^ittena sarvam viSaya vaasinaH |
teSaam ati yashaa loke raamaH satya paraakramaH || 1-77-24
svayambhuuH iva bhuutaanaam babhuuva guNavattaraH |

That way Dasharatha is pleased with the deportment and comportment of Rama, likewise the Brahman-s and urbanites, and even all of the indwellers in the entire kingdom are pleased, and he who has high distinction, his truthfulness alone is his vantage point, and whose hallmarks are of higher degree, that Rama has manifested himself to those subjects in the kingdom, and even to all of the living beings in the world, as the Self-Created Brahma.

avoid so many curse stories. it might create confusions

Hey u guys forget abt... Sita Mata....
she is a imp part of learning too...
her patience, her role as single mother, and how she able to maintain her dignity even at Ravan's palace.... etc all these things means alot.......
otherwise, after hearing all about women culprits they might get the negative impact of Women.....
and agree Akhl has given a good explanation and do explain more about demon Ravan too... esp . the part how a man can loose all his posession in the way of lust.....Well, they are teenagers ... and they are at times follow all such path very easily...without realising its impact in near future....
