Is Susharma mentioned before Virat Parva? If not, then its possible that he became Dury's ally much later.

Shusharma was also a student of Drona. They were like childhood best friends. Chaddy Buddy types

Was not Shalya obligated to fight for Pandavas?

As per Indonesian Mahabharata, Shalya's daughters were married to Duryodhan and Karna (by the way here Banowati/Bhanumati) is his daughter and not Kalinga princess

If we go by this logic he preferred his son in law over his nephews. No other reason settles his support to Duryodhan

For some reason I could never come to term that Shalya changed his loyalty only because Duryodhan gave him hospitality of 5 star stature. If changing localities was so easy Duryodhan would have done it for all the kings who were coming to fight for Pandavas

On a serious note, Duryodhan might be a bad man but he was essentially a very good friend or lucky enough to get really good friends who remained so without reciprocation

All his friends including Shusharma Ashwathama and even Karna went extra miles for him

Hmmm

Maybe still that doesn't help being friendly with someone 8 years elder to you

Aside my main point was BORI CE doesn't mention Karna's involvement in Bheem poisoning

We both agree that Krishna had no possibility of any control over the diplomatic politics and policies of Hastinapur. Whereas post Draupadi swayamavar Krishna had managed entrenched himself with Pandavas. Arjuna subhadra marriage cemented his position there to the extent that Yudhi asked his guidance for Rajasuya. From then on Krishna's words were law for Pandavas.

Balrama didn't care much about Pandavas ever. Neither prior to subhadra's marriage nor after. Most importantly he was not as far sighted as Krishna was.

He may have thought of Dury purely in terms of his personal equation with him. While Krishna looked at long term implications of trade and economy of Dwarka. An alliance with IP would make them party to any alliance of IP with others. Krishna had got into a position with pandavas post subhadra marriage to dictate terms of such treaties as well.

Krishna was hated by every kingdom at the time. He had no real allies of his own other than Kekaya princes his aunt Shrutakirti's sons and Pandavas. And both only came to his side because they were getting persecuted by their paternal cousins.

Otherwise Vasudev's other sisters children Avanti and Chedi hated him and supported Jarasandh

Shishupal realised that in Rajasuya, protested against it and lost his life.

Karna was born as soon as Kunti attained puberty let's say 13.

Epic says she did not get any marriage proposals for a long time finally Kuntibhoj organized a swayamavar for her. Let's say she was 17 or 18 then.

After Pandu married Kunti he brought Madri this would have taken 3 to 6 months and then went for Digvijay to eastern kingdoms. He defeated seven kingdoms that should have atleast taken 2 years to move cavalry lay siege, fight win, recoup the wounded soldiers move cavalry to next kingdom. Finally return.

Then they go on picnic and get cursed and abdicate, give 6 months for this as well. And after that point Pandu doesn't immediately ask Kunti for Niyoga. Atleast a year more would have passed then conception of Yudhi and delivery a year later. So at the very minimum Kunti should be (6 months post marriages +2 years digvijay Β± 6 months curse and abdication Β± 2 years at shatashringa) this would mean Kunti was 22 or 23 years old when Yudhi was born.

If Karna was born when she was 13 and Yudhi when she was 22 or 23 then age gap between them 9 years or 10 years.

Bhima and Dury were born in the same year, but Dury himself was born two years after Yudhi. As Gandhari miscarried herself after Yudhi's birth, then Vyasa put the embryo in the pot which hesitated for two years.

It would anyways make sense for a woman to wait atleast 6 months or a year before she conceives again, breastfeeding is a partial natural contraception.

So gap between Karna and Dury/Bhima would be definetly 11 or 12 years.

Also Kunti apparently did a 1 year tapasya before summoning Indra so maybe again a 2 year gap between Dury/Bhima and Arjun.

So if Arjun was 8 at Pramanakoti, Dury/Bhima would be 10, Yudhi would be 12 and Karna 21 (9 year gap) or 22 (10 year gap)

And if Arjuna was 14 at pramanakoti, Dury/Bhima.would be 16, Yudhi would be 18 and Karna would be 27 or 28

All of Duryodhan's friends were Pandava friends too.

Krishna costed the Pandavas most of their allies. Pandavas burnt their bridges with a lot of kingdoms for Krishna.

Killing Kansa then Jarasandh and finally Shishupal at Rajasuya pushed a lot of people to Dury's side.

Only guys who came for pandavas were their in-laws. There to Sivi kingdom of Devika went to Dury's side. Half of Madra led by Salya, Half of Magadha led by jayatsena, Half of Kashi joined Kosala and led by Bhrihadrath all went to Dury.

Even half of Yadavas not just Bhoja led by Kritaverma joined Dury.

Bhagadutta Avanti king's went Dury because of Krishna

By friends of Duryodhan I didn't mean the allies of Duryodhan in the war.

I meant his personal friends like Susharma Ashwathama and Karna.

I agree much of the allies of Duryodhan were because of him being in anti Krishna group

Pandavas didn't have any friends at all that weren't primarily Hastinapuri allies to begin with. Or they'd have sought help after lac garh.

Krishna didn't cost them any allies.

He was pretty much their only one who wasn't there primarily as Hastinapuri loyalist.

During war, most sided with the one with power and wealth and thought likely to win.

Or we'd have to believe they would've switched sides if Krishna went with Kauravas. Highly doubt it.

Yeah, they disliked Krishna because he put a stop to a lot of their misdeeds. So going against him would've been cherry on top.
