Now, a temple dedicated to Ravan!

Jodhpur

After the serial on Ravan, now a temple dedicated to the demon king would be seen in Jodhpur.

Located about 320 km from the city, it would be the first temple of its kind in north India.

The idol of Ravana is being sculpted using Jodhpur stone by Chunilal from Osian area and is likely to be installed in six months.

"The temple will be built in the premises of Navgrah (nine planets) temple in Chandpole area," Kamlesh Kumar Dave, a priest said.

"The temple will project Ravana as a scholar, writer, thinker, philosopher and his religious devotion and perception," he said.

According to historians, Jodhpur has had an association with Ravana. His wife Mandodari is said to be from Mandore, the ancient capital of Jodhpur state.

'I want Ravan to be recognised'

While the nation grows into the latest massive mythological serial, lets start by looking at the actor playing the title character.
Narain Jha plays Ravan, and here's an insight into the man behind the ten heads.

Born in Bihar, Jha did his Masters in Ancient Indian History from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. After completing the degree, he joined the Shriram Centre for Performing Arts & Culture for a one-year acting course. He came to Mumbai in 1993.

Music was a big passion for Jha, who knew how to play instruments like the mouth organ, flute, banjo and harmonium. He put this to good use, scoring the music for plays he was associated with during his graduation.

The actor comes from a village with a drama club established in 1946, and feels his inclination towards performing arts was obvious. He came to Mumbai, got a portfolio made and, almost immediately, started doing ads. Jha smiles as he recalls that he never had to struggle, getting his first ad within a month of getting this photos shot. Till date, he has done over 75 ads.

Ravan has found a new global fan

The Zee weekly Ravan might not have exactly rocked the TRP charts but the scientific approach to the show seems to have impressed the elite audience. The show has recently won a huge international fan. A singer and composer from US, Charlotte Marie was holidaying in India during the launch of Ravan. She managed to catch up with the first episode and was so impressed with the show and the lead actor Narein Jha that she actually turned up on the sets of Ravan at Umargaon.

"The lady is doing research on Indian music. She realised Ravan's contribution towards Indian classical music and decided to pay us a visit. She watched us shooting and talked about Ravan in great detail. It was nice to see a foreigner show such reverence towards Ravan, who many think is the biggest villain of Indian mythology", says an elated Jha. The pretty Indianised Charlotte Marie has an Indian name too, Leela Shakti. As a token of appreciation she left a gift for Narein Jha.

Narein's got lots of fans!

Narein Jhaa of Raavan was quite surprised to see Charlotte Marie, a singer and composer from US on the sets of the show at Umargaon recently. Apparently, the lady was so impressed by the first episode of Raavan that she decided to check out the sets too! After going back to US, she composed a CD of audio music and sent it to Narein.

Sacked!

Gulshan Sachdev, producer of Raavan, sacks his executive producer after suffering losses of 9 lakh.

Ravee Gupta and Narendra Jha in Raavan

Owing to a huge loss incurred during actress Ravee Gupta's wedding (who plays Kekasi in the show); the procucer of Raavan, Gulshan Sachdev has sacked the executive producer of the show, Vaibhav Kulkarni. As reported earlier, producer Gulshan Sachdev had to suffer a loss of nine lakh when the whole unit of Raavan left for Goa to attend Ravee Gupta's wedding.

When contacted, Gulshan Sachdev said, "Almost the whole unit of Raavan went to Goa to attend Raave's wedding. Honestly, I have nothing against that. Ravee is my friend Rajendra Gupta's daughter and I wanted to go for the wedding too. I was disappointed about the fact that people from the unit left without checking their schedules, leaving the shooting go haywire. I had no other option but to sack one person from the unit because he failed to carry out his responsibility."

On probing further, Gulshan refused to divulge the name of the person. He said, "It will be too embarrassing for him. Hence, I do not want to mention his name. But it was his responsibility to see that the shooting happened and the tapes were delivered on time. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I was helpless. In our business, one can't really afford to lose one day. This step will be a lesson for those who don't take things seriously."

Producer Gulshan Sachdev

However, Vaibhav was more forthcoming. He says, "Gulshanji lost a huge amount when some of the unit members went for Raavee's wedding and he is holding me responsible for it. Although he is not saying it directly, I know why he has sacked me. I tried to meet him and make him aware that it wasn't exactly my fault. I had requested everyone to check their respective schedules before leaving. What else could I have done? How could I have stopped people from going to Goa when director Ranjan Kumar Singh himself was going?"

Vaibhav adds, "I had a heated argument with Gulshanji but he chose not to believe me. I am upset. I have worked with him for two years. I have put in a lot for this show. I have lived away from my house for almost a year and reported to the sets at Umargaon almost every day. The way things are moving, I shall not be surprised if some people are sacked."

Director Ranjan Kumar Singh said that he was aware of the producer sacking people. "We are trying to convince Gulshanji and stop him from taking this step, since nobody did it on purpose."

Reel life drama

Director Ranjan Kumar Singh plans to quit Raavan due to a strained relationship with the producer.

The doomsday for the periodic drama is going to come very soon; with Raavan's director Ranjan Kumar Singh and the producer Gulshan Sachdeva at loggerheads. With the development of a serious confrontation between the two, director Ranjan is planning to soon quit the show.

As reported earlier, Sachdeva had sacked the executive producer Vaibhav Kulkarni owing to a huge loss of Rs 9 lakh incurred during Ravee Gupta's wedding.

A still from Raavan

According to our source, "Director Ranjan was very much against the fact that Vaibhav got sacked on behalf of the whole unit. The new development is that producer Gulshan had forced Ranjan to work on New Year's eve. It was at Umargaon, far away from Mumbai. Now, Ranjan is so miffed that he is thinking of quitting the show, all thanks to the producer's dictatorial commands."

Ranjan said, "It was December 31, and I was busy editing at Umargaon. Although, I had informed Gulshanji, that I want to spend the night with my family, he turned a deaf ear to my plea and I was away from my family working overnight. My wife is very angry with me and I have asked for leave of two-three days. But, now Gulshanji is not responding."

"As I could not keep my promise, my wife Preeti was very angry and we had a fight too. My son Pritanjan and daughter Sanjukta are also not talking to me. My wife is fuming due to Gulshanji's acts," he added.

So, is he quitting the show? "I don't want to comment on this issue. But, my family life has definitely been ruined due to Gulshanji," he said.

Ranjan Kumar Singh

Producer Gulshan Sachdeva, said, "I have suffered a huge loss, so I thought sacking the EP was a fair move. As far as the December 31 night is concerned, even I was working then. I had promised my daughter also, but we have to meet the deadlines, so personal commitments can take a backseat. So, I think that the incident is not a big deal. And being the producer, I have to be strict otherwise everyone will take things for granted. I am the producer and I am liable to the channel for the telecast"

What about the brewing tensions? "Whatever happened are all professional differences. I have no personal grudge against Ranjan. As far as his quitting is concerned, he might be thinking about it but he has never discussed it with me," Gulshan added.

Drowning Gglory

The real heroes: Rajendra Gupta with director Ranjan Kumar

The unit of Ravan was in a tacky situation recently, when two of the actors nearly drowned while shooting in Umargaon. The scene started with the junior artists staging a big fight, resulting in young Ravan and Kumbhakaran falling into the sea. Ultimately, director Ranjan Kumar Singh and Rajendra Gupta aka Somali had to jump in water to save their lives.

Director Ranjan Kumar Singh, when contacted said, "It was a sequence where both, young Ravan and Kumbhakaran, have to cross seven seas to get magical herbs called Nagpushpi. So, we were shooting with a few boats in the middle of the sea. We did not have enough actors, so we told Rajendra Gupta's assistant director Prem to enact the boatman's role. While shooting, Prem was accidentally hurt by one of the junior artist's spears. He got so angry that he hit the junior artist back. The junior artists got mad and attacked Prem. While sorting this out, young Ravan and Kumbhakaran (both 12 years of age) fell in the water. So, Rajendra Gupta and me jumped into the water to save them. We had to swim in deep water to get them out. In the process, I fractured my finger badly." So, the junior artists are the troublemakers? "The whole incident was so quick that we could not stop it. They do create trouble sometimes, but we cannot shoot a period drama without them," he added.

Narendra Jha's bollywood tryst

Narendra who plays Raavan in the Zee TV show, which is an attempt at reviving the audience interest in the epic themes, will be seen in a film that would be released soon. The film titled Ek Dastak is a throbbing tale that takes a hard look on the income tax issues the nation is facing.

When we asked the actor about his role in the film which also stars the beautiful Vasundra Das, he said, "It is a fact that my film would be releasing in the coming days. I am playing one of the Income Tax officials in the film whose only ambition is to set the system right. I won't say that the film is completely a different story since we have witnessed such themes before, but what makes this film unique is its treatment because the director Sudhanshu Shekhar is Additional Income Tax Commissioner himself."

If you think this is all the actor is upto, don't get surprised to read that Narendra has also signed two Telugu films where he plays the bad guy. Talking about his role in Raavan, Narendra adds, "It is a character that has been demonized since ages. Our attempt is to show the real Raavana who too had a human side to him"

Juggling between television and films seems to be Narendra's favourite occupation these days. Let's hope the film turns out to be as good as it is claimed to be.
