Narein Ravan Jha plays income-tax commissioner

Narein Ravan Jha who has done small roles in a few films like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Kacchi Sadak and Funtoosh... Dudes In The 10th Century is all set to play the main protagonist in Eik Dastakk, a film revolving around the income tax department. "I play Kshitij, a joint income-tax commissioner who encounters different experiences in his career.

Towards the end, he realises that every thing comes for a price. Imaandari ki to keemat hoti hai, par beimaani ki bhi keemat hoti hai," explains Narein. The film starring Vasundhara Das as the female lead releases on February 23. Narein says the film is close to reality because it is produced by Shekhar Jha who was a income-tax officer. The small-screen Ravan has also got a Telugu film Chhatrapati to his credit and will soon be doing Yamagola with Mohan Babu and Junior NTR. Both the films have him playing a baddie. As for his role on Zee's Ravan, the actor says, "I have been getting a very good response from the viewers. They are seeing a different perspective of Ravan and are appreciating it."

"I feel so guilty for not working out"

Last year's closure proved to be a turning point in actor Ravee Gupta's life, both professionally and personally. She not only bagged a pivotal role of Keksi, Ravan's mother in Zee's mythological show on the demon God, but she also got hitched to the love of her life, Manoj Bidwai (17th December).

"I'm too lazy to hit the gym" - Ravee

Tagged as a Shilpa Shetty look-alike of the small screen, Ravee (once a model) has a lissome figure, enchanting looks and above all an envious height that sets her apart from the current breed on television.

What makes us curious is how she maintains such a well-toned frame and to seek our answers we head straight to the lady in question. And to our disbelief, Ravee confessed, "I'm too lazy to hit the gym. I feel so guilty of not working out, but after slogging on the set for hours, I just don't feel like straining my self any further." Though technically she would love to work out (hard core stuff) for at least three days a week.

Ravee's a self-confessed rich food eater, so wonder where those extra calories find their way! "I am very lucky in the sense my physiology is such that I don't gain weight, even if I hog fatty stuff," she admits. On a lighter note she adds, "My actor husband Manoj Bidwai just hates me for this for the poor thing has a very bad tendency of pilling on extra kilos, even if he breathes!"

"Actually till about two years back, I was extremely thin. So I used to do aggressive weight training (five days a week) and the result is there for all to see. Now, I have a great figure to flaunt. Those months proved to be the best times for me health wise as I would not only feel fresh all the time, my self confidence was also on a high post work outs. I would want love to follow the same ritual even today. But unfortunately I end up enrolling in various gyms and then keep dropping out. I guess this habit of mine must have definitely helped many a gyms to flourish," she laughs.

"Manoj is a die hard fitness fanatic" - Ravee with her hubby who's also an actor.

But why a fascination for a gym; one can workout even at home, rite? "It's just that I like the entire ritual of getting dressed in the gym gear, working out with others , watching my frame in all the mirrors and the best part, drinking the protein shakes at the gym caf after finishing up," Ravee states as a matter of fact.

Though this lanky actor doesn't work out much, she believes that it's very important for people in this industry to keep fit, as the job profile is really physical. "Most of us are on our toes 12-16 hours a day, so stamina building is critical. Besides you also need to look good for the camera, which is no mean task! But the fact that nowadays many gyms function 24/7, it has become more convenient for people like us to work out at any odd hour. And now post marriage, since my hubby's a die hard fitness fanatic, possibly both of us might make it a point to hit the gym regularly," is an after thought she gives.

On this new resolution made my Ravee, we sign off hoping that this time around she does stick to her desired gymming ritual (though she hardly requires to undergo the grid)!

Tapasvi Mehta
Something to hiss about

Zee TV's show Ravan has quite a star on the sets. The child actor Tapasvi Mehta, who plays the chota Ravan, is quite the fearless hero.

When he's not shooting with real snakes and reptiles in character, he does a lot of timepass with them on the sets in Umargaon (Gujarat).

You can catch the chota Ravan showing off his brave antics fighting a real cobra on the show this week!

A jobless Raavan

As the creative director and writer quibble, the shoot of Raavan comes to a halt

Ranjib Mazumder

A still from Raavan

Sudden brakes have been applied to the Raavan shoot for the last three days. The director was in for a surprise when no script materialised till the day of the shoot. It's a case of the mighty creative differences as the creative director and the writer go loggerheads at each other. The production house has suffered losses due to the delay.

Says director Ranjan Kumar Singh, "The script is not ready and the shoot has come to a halt for the past few days. I think the producers have suffered losses of over nine lakhs."

The director is very upset about the situation. "This is not the question of being angry. I stay away from my family in Umargaon. Moreover, I am being paid per episode, so hanging around without shooting is pointless. I still don't know when we will start shooting."

Masoom Singh, creative director of the show said, "The delay is due to creative differences between the writer and the creative team. No doubt, the writer Chandan Arora has done fabulous research on the subject. But, he does not know the pulse of the audiences. He is very biased and possessive about his ideas and never takes suggestions. But, being the creative head, I have to ensure that it's interesting for the audience at the same time, otherwise it will look like a documentary."

He continues, "Chandan is focussing more on the Ramayana. But, we want to centre on Raavan. Moreover, our director Ranjan is yet to showcase the emotional side of Raavan into the show. Although, we have come to a critical stage with the script, Ranjan is killing the show by making it more dramatic. Being the creative head, I have to balance it. As a result, I am sandwiched between the director and the writer."

The writer of the show, Chandan Arora, however was annoyed with our calls. "If there is some problem with their planning, why are they blaming me? I have nothing to say beyond that," he said.

Just wanna be with you'

Love is in the air today! And on this mushy day, when all lovey-dovey couples celebrate togetherness and their eternal love for each other, we speak to those TV celebs who have recently tied the marital knot. What do they feel about their 1st Valentine's Day post wedding? Kavita Shyam finds out.

Manoj Biddvai (spouse - actor Ravee Gupta)

Significance: This year's V-Day means a lot to me as I recently got married. For me every day since 14 December (my wedding day) has been special and I've been celebrating love and honeymooning. Valentine's Day means a lot to me and it holds a lot of promise for true love. On a lighter note, thank god there's just one such day in a year, else men would end up digging holes in their pocket!
Special Plans: We are planning to throw a pre-Valentine's Day bash for 40 of our close friends and on D day, it'll be lunch at Taj followed by a long drive.

Roshni Chopra (director - actor Siddharth Kumar Anand)

Significance: We are newly married so everyday is a V-Day for us. I express my love for my partner as and when I feel like, but yes our first Valentine's which we celebrated three years ago was special. I believe that one doesn't need an excuse to express love on a particular day. It's just one more opportunity for the MNC's to blow hearts out of proportion and the day is simply consumption oriented.
Special Plans: I'd be working double shifts and so is the case with my husband, Siddharth.

Tina Parakh (spouse- spiritual guru Vikram Hazra)

Significance: It's no big deal and one doesn't need to make an effort to express love only a Valentine's Day. For me everyday with my hubby is special.
Special Plans: There isn't anything special that we are doing for Valentine's Day. Just that I'll spend my entire day with ''

Gurdip Kohli (spouse - actor Arjun Punj)

Significance: Valentine's Day is a special day for love and one should celebrate it with spouse or loved ones. One gets to share all the pleasant memories, dates, fights and laugh at them together.
Special Plans: This Valentine's Day I have hooked Arjun at home to be with me the entire day and laze around post which we go out for dinner. My best gift would be to have Arjun around me on the special day to pamper me all day long.

Small and fearless!

You must have seen chhota Ravan fearlessly playing with snakes in Zee's Ravan last week. And mind you, the snakes were real! Tapasvi, the fourteen year old boy who plays the role, candidly confesses that he wasn't aware he had to shoot with real snakes. "I was told they would be fake but when I went on the set I was shocked to see the real ones slithering about," he informs.

Initially, he refused to go anywhere near them, forget touching them. But the director coaxed him into touching it "and I found it very cold. Suddenly my fear went out and I took it on my lap," he says. He had to shoot with not one but three snakes of which two were pythons and one was a cobra. "I loved the cobra. It's fangs were amazing," he smiles. So much so that, once he got over his fear, Tapasvi started playing with it even when he was off-camera!

TV has been always considered as a ladder to make it big in Bollywood. That said, there are not many who feel ashamed or uncomfortable talking about his/her TV career, including King Khan Shah Rukh. However, Zee TV's Ravan aka Narien Jha is a tad different in this matter. Recently at the music launch of the film Eik Dasttak, it was revealed that Narein Jha plays the main lead. Jha appeared to be very excited about the fanfare surrounding the event. But when asked about his experience of playing Ravan on TV, he tried to cut it short. "It's good," he simply said. When prodded further to elaborate more on this, Jha got irritated and said, "You are at the music release of my film, so you should only ask me questions related to it and you should understand this."

Jha didn't seem to care about the fact that the people present there were whispering, "Are ye to Zee TV ka Ravan hai..." (He is Zee TV's Ravan). Does this attitude have anything to do with the fact that the show is not getting good TRPs? Or does Jha feel that TV is below a movie star's status? (Sampurn)

In a league of their own
Actress Mona Singh and singer Lata Mangeshkar at the recording of an album by T-Series recently in Mumbai. This is Lata Mangeshkar's first musical association with T-Series. Also starring Mona Singh, the album is being directed by Anupam Sinha. The first song to go on air is a soft melody that touches the soul with its simplicity. As always, Lata's voice leaves a heartrending and poignant effect.

Ismail all set for sa re ga...
Remember the ever serious judge of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge? Yes, we are talking of Ismail Darbar. His unhappiness with the unfair treatment meted out to the contestants of his gharana and his decision once to leave the show mid-way when one of his students, Nihira was voted out, made headline news and created a controversy. This year in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2007, Darbar is hopeful of creating a splash yet again. Recently at a function he said casually, "This year the response to the show is double. The number of aspirants for auditions have also increased." Asked about his expectations this year considering his student Debojit was the champ last time, he said, "This time we judges will be selecting the contestants on our own for our respective gharanas." Will the music maestro be harder to please this time? (Sampurn)

Narein Jha ashamed of Ravan?

For most actors, television has always been a ladder to make it big in the Bollywood. But there are exceptions too. Many like Shah Rukh Khan are not ashamed to talk about their careers in the television and what they have gained from the medium.

But Zee TV's Ravan aka Narien Jha is a tad different in this matter. Recently, at the music launch of the film Eik Dasttak, it was revealed that Narein Jha plays the main lead in the movie. Naturally, Jha too appeared to be very excited about the fanfare surrounding the event. But when asked about his experience of playing Ravan on TV, he tried to cut it short. Probably, he was ashamed and felt uncomfortable to dwell on the topic for long.

"It's good", he simply said. When prodded to elaborate more on this, Jha got irritated and said, "You are here to witness the music release of my film, and so you should only ask me questions related to the movie. I hope you understand this."

Jha didn't seem to care about the fact that the people present there were whispering, "Are ye to Zee TV ka Ravan hai (He is Zee TV's Ravan)". Although people still recognise him for his role in the television, Jha seems to be reluctant to accept the fact.

By the way, Mr Jha, has this got something to do with the fact that the show is not getting good TRPs? Looks like TRPs rule the lives of actors much more than good content does!

Manoj Bidvvai lost a huge diamond

...but a sweeper found and returned it a day later

GITA HARI

The recently married couple Manoj Bidvvai and wife Raavee Gupta were in for a shock, when they discovered the one-and-half carat diamond missing from Manoj's engagement ring, as they considered it a premonition of some impending malevolence. "On Saturday, I went to the gym as usual and did my workouts. In the evening when I was relaxing in the club with Raavee, I noticed the diamond in my ring had gone missing," says Manoj who is in the habit of fidgeting with it. After a frantic search of the lawns, lobby and washroom of the club, they reconciled themselves to their predicament. The couple was all the more worried as the expensive solitaire was gifted to Manoj by Raavee's parents for their engagement. They went over to her place and apologised to her parents for having lost it. "And in typical parental manner they consoled us," Manoj says. "Her mother told us not to worry, that we should thank God since anything worse could have happened. After all we could buy another one," he adds. The next day, a friend and astrologer of the family met Raavee's mother and told her that Manoj's precious gemstone will be found and by Manoj himself. The actor went to the gym the next day, as usual, but with a heavy heart. With little hope, he casually asked his trainer and others if they had seen the diamond which was met with a negative reply. Then he found an attendant standing in a corner and Manoj reveals, "I went up to him and asked in Hindi, if he had seen a stone (patthar that was shining). Imagine my surprise when the housekeeping attendant went inside the store room and brought out the stone, and said he found it while sweeping the place." The overjoyed actor says his faith has doubled after the incident, because, "When I rewarded him with money, he refused to take it and I had to literally thrust it in to his pocket." Manoj is presently busy with his Bollywood film Rivaaz opposite Meghna Reddy. He considers getting back his lost solitaire as a good omen!
