Move over Gabbar, Ravan is here!

Different avatars: Narein Jhaa

Narein Jhaa has no reservations about playing the man that everyone loves to hate — Ravan. "People know Ravan as a destroyer and Sita's kidnapper, but there was more to him than that.

Ravan was also a scholar and had a humane side to him," says Jhaa, who took on the Zee drama because of the unusual subject. "It will make people sit up and wonder about the man behind the image."

Chikoo magnet

At the moment, the actor is diving his time between shooting at Umargaon (Gujarat) and home in Mumbai. "We shoot at this place surrounded by chikoo farms," says Jhaa, who is particularly fond of the fruit. "Now, I have become even more fond of chikoos.

I have at least 12-15 chikoos a day!"
Unit sources reveal that Jhaa chomps on the chikoos all the time in between shots. Most of the time, director Ranjan Singh has to pull him away from his chikoo fixation to shoot.

"They have their small arguments about how many chikoos one can consume in a day, but it's in jest. It is hilarious to see him in the Ravan costume chomping on chikoos!"

Jhaa's first television outing was with the DD show, Shanti. He was also part of the ABCL talent hunt and had the opportunity to hone his skills under Roshan Taneja.

After completing my post-graduation in history from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Jhaa joined the Shriram Centre for Performing Arts.

Jhaa has also done films like Fun2shh, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose — The Forgotten Hero and Kachchi Sadak. He has also shot for the film Dastak with Vasundhara Das.

Also on the anvil, is an international project with a US-based film company, Eagle and Falcon. "I am looking forward to shooting for this project. At this point, I can't reveal more about the project."
Meanwhile, being the small screen's Ravan, is giving him quite a high.

Show stopper

Back to Section Stories

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

A still from Ravana
The shooting of the mythological serial Ravana was disrupted on Tuesday due to some problem with the Junior Artistes' Association. The shooting was stalled for more than an hour. When contacted, Feroz Khan, spokesperson of the Junior Artistes' Association confirmed the news. Feroz said, "All of us went to Umargaon to check whether they have employed our artistes or not. On reaching there, we found that they had engaged locals to play of the crowd. That's why we had to stall the shooting in protest."

Feroz further added, "Ranjan Kumar Singh, the director of the serial, has done this in the past too. We have enough work in Mumbai, so we have never interrupted or complained. But, now, we don't have much work in hand. So, we want them to use our junior artiste in the serials, instead of locals."

Director, Ranjan Kumar Singh was not available for comment

'I want Ravan to be recognised'

While the nation grows into the latest massive mythological serial, lets start by looking at the actor playing the title character. Narain Jha plays Ravan, and here's an insight into the man behind the ten heads. Born in Bihar, Jha did his Masters in Ancient Indian History from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. After completing the degree, he joined the Shriram Centre for Performing Arts & Culture for a one-year acting course. He came to Mumbai in 1993. Music was a big passion for Jha, who knew how to play instruments like the mouth organ, flute, banjo and harmonium. He put this to good use, scoring the music for plays he was associated with during his graduation. The actor comes from a village with a drama club established in 1946, and feels his inclination towards performing arts was obvious. He came to Mumbai, got a portfolio made and, almost immediately, started doing ads. Jha smiles as he recalls that he never had to struggle, getting his first ad within a month of getting this photos shot. Till date, he has done over 75 ads.

'I was petrified to play Ravan's mother'

Shameem Khan
Wednesday, December 06, 2006 23:59 IST

With her wedding date set for December 17, model-actor Ravee Gupta is taking it easy with her work in 'Ravan'.

For a girl as young and gorgeous as Ravee Gupta, it came as a surprise that she was essaying the role of Ravan's mother in 'Ravan' (Zee TV). Quiz her on that and she confesses "Oh, I was petrified too when I got the offer. Imagine playing a mother to a mythology hero. But then I listened to the storyline, which speaks of her younger days and her warrior-like image, and I was impressed. Also, there are very few scenes as the older woman. So I relented."

Much as the role is challenging to essay, Ravee can't help cribbing about the distance she has to travel for her shooting "The set is located in Umergaon which is a good four to five hours drive from Mumbai and it is located in the wilderness. It's very boring and depressing being away from the family especially now when I am looking forward to my wedding."

The only consolation is the fact that she has her actor father Rajendra Gupta for company. "He plays my father in the show too. This is the first time I am working with him and it's an experience just watching a veteran like him at work. But my dad is a cool man and never interferes in anyone's work."

With acting in her genes, was acting a foregone conclusion in her career options? "Far from it!a I was pathologically shy and under confident when I was younger. But like every girl, I wanted to be in Aishwarya Rai's shoes and wanted to win the beauty queen title. I started modelling for ads when in college and even enrolled for Miss India which gave me a lot of exposure to the fashion world. Modelling and doing videos was the next thing. And before I knew it, Ektaa Kapoor who is forever inviting models on her shows had selected me for a show. Infact, dad didn't even know I had started acting when I signed my first show 'Kaahin Kissi Roz'. But he sure was happy because he wanted me to be an actor," she reminisces.

Right now, however, work is the last thing on her mind "I am busy preparing for my wedding. My fiance Manoj Bidwai is an actor himself and we met through common friends. Before we knew it, we had fallen in love and that was a surprise to me. I always considered myself pretty hoity-toity for the simple soul that he is. But love can play strange games," she smiles.

The marriage is straight out of a dream. "It's a sunset wedding at a beautiful beach in Goa. I am a nature lover and this is just what I wanted. Of course, there will be the sangeet and the pheras but that will be followed with a cocktail party," she says dreamily.

Maha yuddh!

The writer and director of Ravan are at loggerheads. Writer Chandan stormed out of the sets after a heated argument with director Ranjan.

Reena Thapar Kapoor

The bone of contention: Narendra Jha as Ravan

Ravan, the new show on Zee, has been in the news for various reasons since its inception. This time the buzz is that the writer of the show Chandan Singh stormed out of the sets when director Ranjan Singh demanded certain changes in the script. Says a source in the unit, "When Chandan Singh reached the sets of Ravan in Umargaon, Gujarat, he came to know that some major changes were being made in his script. He confronted Ranjan and a heated argument broke out. Soon things went out of control and Chandan packed his bags and returned to Mumbai, leaving the entire unit in a soup."

When contacted, Ranjan sounded obviously upset about the turn of events. He said, "As a writer, Chandan has his own vision and as a director I have my own. Ravan is a controversial subject and I'm not going show any scene that may upset the sentiments of the Indian audience. For us, Ram and Hanuman are the heroes and to pull them down could have given rise to a serious problem. Yes, I did take certain liberties with his script but I don't see any reason for Chandan to walk out on me!"
At war: Chandan, writer of the show Ranjan, director of the show

The writer is currently in Mumbai and refuses to speak to the director of their show. Says Chandan, "I am surprised at Ranjan's audacity. He changed my story even though he knows that I've done extensive research on the subject. I'm not an amateur. He should've spoken to me before changing the script. I feel betrayed."

In this war between the director and the writer, it is the show that is suffering. Apparently, the channel had to convince Chandan to continue writing for the show. Says Chandan, "I'm still writing for them but I refuse to speak to Ranjan. The channel has assured me that such a thing will never happen again".

Meanwhile, Ranjan is upset because he has to speak to the writer of his show through the channel. "I guess I have to take it. At least someone responsible has stepped in to make sure that there is no further stress," says Ranjan.

Interview of the week: By Sneha Hazarika

Ravee Gupta has been in the industry for quite sometime; but she is being noticed most lately because of Raavan. The challenging role of Ravan's mother in the much appreciated show is making her stand really tall. She talks at length about the role and her impending marriage with long time boyfriend Manoj Bidvai.

Q Why did you choose to enact the aged character of Raavan's mother in the show? It's like Hollywood hottie Angelina Jolie playing mum to Colin Farell who is almost her age in Alexander!
Well that's a sweet comparison. But I would be seen as an older woman only for two or three episodes after which I would be playing my age. It surely was a tough job for me to play an elderly character. But I enjoyed the challenges.

Q Did you go through some special training to portray the character?
I keep trying to find inspiration from my life. I thought about how I would console my younger brother and just poured my heart into the act. Then the emotions came out automatically.

Q We heard that you would be wearing revealing clothes later on…
No, they wouldn't be revealing as such. Everything is planned according to the situation. We are not here to provoke reactions.

Q How did you bag this role?
My serial Viraasat was on air. The production people gave me a call and narrated me the script. On the very first instance, I was nervous to accept it. But then I thought if I am getting a chance to experiment then why not go ahead with it?

Q Raavan has been accepted well by the audience. Does the scientific approach to the serial set it apart from the run of the mill mythologicals that hit the marquee time and again?
The producers have adopted a fresh approach to everything — be it story, narration, costumes etc. In the industry, everyone is scared to experiment. It's good that our producers did that and we are getting the results. The whole approach to Raavan is very unconventional.

Q Your dad Rajendra Gupta is playing your on-screen dad in Raavan. How was it working with him for the first time?
That was one of the main reasons I zeroed down on the role. Our chemistry has worked on television and I am really enjoying working with my dad. He is a great actor.

Q Any interesting incident that happened during the shoot!
Yeah, when I was asked to ride a horse. A horse is a huge animal; it's sometimes very hard to control it. The animal can get temperamental and is very sensitive to noise. I was wearing a silk outfit while riding and I just slipped off from the horse and fell into the water. It was quiet embarrassing.

Q When are you getting married yo Manoj Bidwai!
Our marriage is scheduled for December 17. I haven't yet found the time to make all the preparations because of my shooting schedule.

Q We heard it won't take place in Mumbai but in Goa!
Yes, I will be having a beach marriage in Goa. It will be a traditional Hindu marriage.

Q So where have you two planned your honeymoon?
We will be going to Thailand for our honeymoon.

Anti-hero as hero
Screen On & Off
SUDESHNA BANERJEE
New avatar: Ravan on the throne; (below) Mandodari, queen of Lanka

In an age of regressive saas-bahu drama, this is a gale of fresh air on television. A teleserial, on Zee TV, has taken up the brief for the original anti-hero in Indian folklore — Ravan. "Ravan is such a great character. Bina jane log putla jalate hain," script-writer Chandan Singh frets on phone. "You mention Ravan and people say dusht, ahankari. But give me one instance where Ravana has erred other than his capture of Sita," challenges Narein Jhaa, playing the Lanka ruler.

The serial promises to show the "human face of Ravan" described in myriad mythological tracts as diverse as Michael Madhusudan Dutt's Meghnadbodh Kavya (on the ploy to kill Ravana's unarmed son outside battle) and a Javanese Ramayana (showing how Meghnad's wife Sulochana fought with Laxman to seek revenge and got killed, which is the starting point of Zee TV's saga). "In Tulsi's Ramcharitmanas, when Ravan is struck by Brahmastra, Rama asks Laxman to go and seek knowledge from the dying king. He is an encyclopedia," contends Singh.

Adds Jhaa: "Ravan was a reformist and was liked by his subjects. Haven't you heard of the term 'sone ki Lanka'? We revere Sita mata so much that whoever raises a finger at her becomes a villain. But no one considers that he was taking revenge for his sister Surpanakha's humiliation."

Director Ranjan Singh goes a step further: "Shree Ram puja ghar mein achhey lagtey hain, par aaj ke din mein unko apna lena mushkil hain. Common people will find it easier to connect to Ravan, who is black and white like us."

Think Ramayana and you think Ramanand Sagar. But to connect to the 21st century, the loud drama of the 80s' Doordarshan presentation has been cut out. Ravan speaks human. There is no thigh-slapping, foot-stomping swearing of a bigmouth. He is younger and leaner. Rama looks like a conscientious leader not given to lengthy discourse and beatific smiles, which may win him less devotees than Arun Govil, but helps to keep the storyline taut.

The serial is also raising a toast to scientific progress of the age. "The sages, like Agastya Rishi, were actually great scientists. Why speak of only Ravan's Pushpak rath? There were nine types of aircraft in vogue then, including fighter planes. The Brahmastra itself was a missile. It is well-known that centuries later Leonardo da Vinci was influenced by military accounts in Ramayana," Chandan Singh explains.

The serial also dispels popular myths like Ravan having 10 heads. "It was actually the reflections from a many-faced gemstone on Ravan's necklace that gave that effect," the director clarifies.

Shooting is on at full throttle on the Rs 2-crore set in Umargaon, Gujarat, where the earlier Ramayana team had also camped. The third episode has just been aired this Saturday at 9 pm (repeat at 10 am on Sunday). Rama has picked up the Brahmastra and taken aim, but Ravana has desisted from countering with an equally destructive weapon from his arsenal. "I cannot let Creation come to end," he thinks and embraces his own death.

Ravan attracts US singer

The Muse: Narendra Jha, Charlotte's CD cover

Narendra Jha aka Ravan was pleasantly surprised when a foreigner visited him on the sets of Ravan (Zee TV) at Umargaon. The foreigner, Charlotte Marrie is a singer and composer by profession and was in India recently on a tour to study Indian culture. Apparently, she was curious to know more about Ravan after she saw an episode of the serial on him. Later, she flew back to the US, and sent Narendra a compilation of her music.

An overwhelmed Narendra says, "I was very impressed to see Charlotte's interest in and knowledge about Ravan. While we were shooting she observed us carefully and even shared some information about him that I didn't know. Once she returned to her home in the US, she mailed me a compilation of her music. Charlotte works on developing music that has amazing healing powers. I have heard the music she sent to me. It really has a soothing effect. I now listen to it at all times, even while I am driving. It mostly has verses from Hindu religious chants."

Apparently, Charlotte gave a copy of her music to Narendra because music had been an integral part of Ravan's life. "She thought that because music was close to Ravan, her music would help me to relate more with Ravan and eventually help me play the role better. Charlotte told me that when Ravan was held captive in King Bali's dungeon for almost a year, he began composing music as a means to elevate himself and eventually became proficient in music. Impressed with this, Bali's sister fell in love with him and the two then married each other. Thus, music was the reason behind his second wedding," says Narendra.

The wedding crashers

Actress Ravee Gupta's marriage cost the producer of Ravan a loss of Rs 9 lakh

Back to Section Stories

Reena Thapar Kapoor

A still from Ravan
As Ravee Gupta and Manoje Biddvai were busy taking the holy vows, the producer of Ravan was busy counting on the mega bucks that he apparently lost due to her absence. Word has it that the entire star cast and technicians of the Ravan flew to Goa to attend Ravee's wedding. As a result, the producer had to bear a loss of Rs 9 lakh.

"How could the entire unit fly to Goa for three days? We had their dates blocked and we couldn't go anywhere or do anything else during that period," says a unit member.

Apparently, Ravee was aware of the people from the unit who would attend her wedding and she had booked them at a hotel in Goa. "I'd informed the producer that I'd be going to Goa for Ravee's wedding," director Ranjan Singh defends himself.

Manoje Biddvai with Ravee Gupta
"Why make a mountain out of a molehill? Yes, I won't deny that I was quite shocked to see other people from the unit in Goa. After being in the profession for a decade, I realise that the show must go on. But there was no way I could have avoided my trip to Goa," adds Ranjan.

The inside news is that the loss due to cancellation of three days shooting came to approximate 9 lakh. "The loss was unavoidable, but I wasn't aware that it would amount this much. That's a lot of money. Had I known, I'd have cancelled my ticket and have stuck around," Ranjan says.

It wasn't just the director who had a gala time in Goa, but the executive producer Amit Gupta, Camera man Ravi Mishra, editor Shashikant Morya, along with a lot of other artistes attended the party. "We didn't realise that the repercussions of our absence would cost so much. Yes, there was a set built and we couldn't afford to waste days like that but now the damage is already done," says the source from the channel
