Hi my Lovelies! Chapter 7 is up :D I also added the list of songs in all titles on page 1 with the index. The idea was inspired through one of the other stories I read.
Hope you all enjoy the update!
Chapter 7
"Mitwa, Kahein Dhadhkane Tujhse Kya"
“She is too clever and has successfully snuck out of every complex situation before without charges. You have to be careful with this one”
Great. Just bloody great.
Asad had been barking away orders to his lawyer since morning after he had seen Tanveer sneaking out of the house. He wanted her out and he wanted it fast. It was a good thing his Ammi had shooed him off the table during breakfast. He really didn’t have the strength there to sit and socialize without wringing her neck. And this piece of conversation wasn’t really helping him out either. He couldn’t bear to blow his cover out yet, nor did he want her to be in reach of his family. He had no clue how dangerous could she possibly prove to be.
“Even if you throw her out of the house, we don’t really have any basis to press legal charges yet.”
Asad disconnected the line then. He did not want to hear anymore. His head hurt with unconsumed rage—and as if that wasn’t enough, Zoya had decided to hide away all day from him. Again.
What was wrong with that woman!
A soft knock brought him of out his angry deliberations.
“Asad”
“Ammi?” It was ridiculous he was disappointed.
“Are you free? Anyway I need to talk you” she declared before he could interrupt.
His Ammi’s tone told him she was about to bombard him with ‘Zoya and Asad sitting together in the garden’ scenario. He tried to dodge the bullet.
“Not now Ammi, I…” Absolutely not caring what he had just said, Dilshad soldiered on regardless.
“ Well I am not leaving until you tell me the truth, so you might as well start talking”
“The truth?” Asad tried to sound nonchalant. He missed his Ammi’s glare boring into his back.
She turned him around to look at his face, her hand firm at his shoulder.
“ You know what I mean”
Silence.
“ Asad, the sparks have been flying so high even Najma noticed”
What the hell? When had he become so transparent? Surely his Ammi was just trying to trick him.
“I am not trying to trick you” Dilshad continued reading his thoughts “ You can hide behind your discourteousness towards her, but your eyes don’t lie Asad. They have been stuck to her door since morning.” And a lot of past other mornings too.
Asad tried not to sigh audibly. He had fooled no one. No one but himself.
Dilshad patiently waited for a response but hearing nothing but a soft sigh from his son, she went on with her speech.
“ I know you have always been afraid of relationships. But trust me son, you have no reason to be. You are not your…” She felt ashamed to complete it. The welts of pain Rashid Ahmed Khan had given her were nothing compared to the anguish in her son’s eyes right now. She had to make him believe. It was the only pathway to his happiness.
“You can never hurt her” she pleaded again. Please Allah! Give him enough strength to accept this. I would never ask for anything more.
Asad was still giddy taking in the turn the conversation had taken. He suspected Ammi being suspicious of him- she was his Ammi after all, but she had read him like an open book.
But then again she was his Ammi.
And for once he didn’t want to hide behind his pretence. He had already done Zoya wrong so many times— with his hurtful words and spiteful judgments’. There was no room for error left. He wanted to do this right and the first step was to let his fears out.
“We are too different from each other”
“Ever heard of opposites attract…”
He opened his mouth to cut her but she continued
“ You may be the sun and the moon Asad but she is what you need. Have you not noticed the way she lit up our lives– your life– ever since she walked into this house. Or perhaps you forgot the times when you had lent her your shoulder to calm her down in her dark times.”
He had the audacity to look shocked. Was there something she didn't know?
“ Seriously, how could you not realize it Asad? You two fight all day, everyday, but you refuse to see her unhappy, and she you."
"And that is exactly why you two are perfect for each other. Because unlike being like each other, you are there for each other. And that is what really matters. That’s what makes life complete. Aur agar aisa saath mil jaye ton zindagi se aur kya chahiye ”
Dilshad’s voice had turned unmistakably sad towards the end.
Asad couldn’t help but feel the anger for his father bubble up in him again. He had not missed the look of longing that crossed his Ammi’s face. But he had a more burning matter in front of him right now.
“ I… actually… I don’t know what Zoya…” feels about me. He left it unfinished. He was confident that she was just as attracted to him as he was. She had admitted it not too long ago. He had replayed that night over and over again trying to remember more detail. But just that one line stayed “And you know what, main bhi aapko bahut pasand krti hoon”.
But what if it was just that? Just attraction? How deep did her feelings really go? Was her heart hurting for him like his was?
Also, when had he turned into such a Majnu. Incredibly Foolish!
“If your eyes don’t lie Asad, neither do Zoya’s.” Dilshad continued breaking his reverie.
And trust his Ammi to leave it at that. He nearly exploded of curiosity. What could she possibly mean? Had Zoya said something?
He felt his Ammi’s hand caress his head.
“Asad, these decisions last a lifetime. The happiness that comes with it lasts a lifetime. Don’t let yours walk away. Find the courage.”
Because if you don’t, I will simply set up your wedding date, she had wanted to say. There was no way she would let his fears hinder their happiness. They were made for each other. She could feel it in her bones.
“Okay, so let's go over it one more time. I will drop by wearing a maroon coloured burqah and leave all the equipment at your house early morning. I am also making a tutorial to help you connect the cameras properly. Just make sure you set up the cameras somewhere with a decent view.” Zoya chattered on not sparing a second to breathe.
Ayaan’s breath had gotten stuck in his throat too. He was in awe of Mona darling. He had called to inform her with the news of his impending doom- which weirdly enough didn’t feel like such a saza anymore. But Zoya had not bothered to listen to any of his sob stories. She had simply refused to see Asad and Ayaan mope around on his engagement day.
She never had any siblings or experienced being a part of a family as big as theirs. Asad had what she didn’t. He should never have to miss this. She was used to unfair. He didn’t have to!
So they — well, more like she — had come up with a master plan.
Zoya was to deliver all the camera equipment programmed to her computer to Siddiqui house in the morning. Ayaan was to set it all up and once up and working, everyone could grab some popcorn and enjoy the show. Easy peasy!
The stars lit Asad’s dark room sieving their shine through. He had been sitting in the same position since the afternoon, his mind racing with different ideas. Could it be possible? Did he have enough courage just like his Ammi believed. He was in awe of her mother. He did manage to conceal a great deal of his emotions most of the time but his Ammi missed nothing.
Only if he could believe in her belief. It was enthralling to think of his future with Zoya.Even more enticing to think of fulfilling his desires to its heart’s greed. His heart rejoiced at the mention of giving in. To let go of all fears and open up his heart to the girl who had managed to move him. He knew very well of the differences, of her imperfections and his.
The selfish monster in him clawed to get out. He didn’t care about his baggage from childhood. He didn’t care about the future. He negated the consequences of loving her incorrectly.
Only if he could let it out. Only if he could find the courage. Only!
Zoya who had decided to go over all the last minute details about mission raabart ki sagai hadn’t seen Asad walk in to the kitchen. She chattered on and on without sensing his presence, her back towards him.
Asad had decided to finally step out after his vigorous mind debate. His whole body was stiff from sitting in the same position. He had instantly noticed Zoya having a conversation with that treacherous Raabart. But to his intense pleasure, he had found her congratulating him on his engagement.
So he was getting married soon? Good for him.
At least there will no Laddu and Raabart cheerleading in his house for a while.
“And you better finish up all kebabs on my behalf too!” he heard her say.
“Allah Miyan” she exclaimed all of a sudden. She had lost the phone network again. How in the world was she going to implement her plan tomorrow if the network was going to act like this.
Her angry features quickly rearranged themselves into a nervous smile as she turned around to leave.
Mr. Khan? When did he come here and how much had he heard. Always sneaking up on her. This man!
Before he could say anything, she rushed away with an excuse to call everyone for dinner.
Zoya’s vibrating cell phone brought his attention back to the table. Something was off. Maybe it was the irritation flooding his mind as soon as he saw the name Raabart flash on the screen or just how familiar the digits looked. It took him a long second until it clicked.
Ayaan!
Ayaan is Raabart?
I mean she was congratulating him on his engagement. And it was very possible indeed. He vividly remembered Ayaan had slipped up once and mentioned about a mission called pyaas something to stop him from going to court and come to think about it hadn’t Zoya done the same. It was highly unlikely she wouldn’t have been in on it. In fact he wouldn’t be surprised if it were her idea in the first place.
Tanveer didn’t miss the spring in his step as he walked towards the kitchen table. Jammy looked quite pleased for once. Wonder what made him so jolly. Maybe she could recite her sob story tonight. He hadn’t responded to her little touches, perhaps it was time to make her intentions a little more clear.
Asad felt someone’s gaze on him and looked up to see four pairs of eyes' staring at him.
His Ammi had and Najma were frozen in the same position as each other, their head slightly tilted, eyebrows wiggled together, eyes fixated at him. Another set of kohl lined eyes he liked very much looking at were larger than usual, her hand frozen mid bite and mouth comedically wide open. He wished the last set would vanish into thin air.
“What?”
“ Bhaijaan, I have never heard you whistle you know” Najma’s voice broke the silence, her smile replacing the frown on her face. It was quite funny to watch the synchronized facial features of his Ammi and Najma rearrange themselves, although his object of affection still looked very much in shock.
“Ms Faaroqui you can close your mouth now. Its not that shocking”
Zoya somehow managed to swallow the bite stuck in her throat.
“ It is Mr. Khan.” He raised a brow at her.
“Shocking indeed” she concluded in a whisper.
Dinner continued on as an awkward event. Asad’s cheerful whistling had suddenly changed to him scowling at the jar of water set in front of him when Tanu started recollecting their childhood memories. Dilshad was confused at his sudden mood swing while Zoya tried to ignore him. He was always so cryptic. It was hard to tell with him. She had stopped with her guesses a long time ago.
Asad wanted to put his hands over his ears and yell la la la at the highest pitch his lungs could manage. He couldn’t tolerate one more word from her snake mouth. He tried to ignore the blather and get back to his train of thought.
Hmm maybe it wasn't too bad having raabart for her best friend after all, though they were both equally immature. For one, he knew his baby brother was a good friend to people, and second one of the potential bachelor's was out; not that he was competing or anything. But it was a nice feeling nonetheless.
“Allah Miyan!”
The heads whipped into the same direction, eyes settling at the man on the table who had just begun to whistle the same tune again.
